Why Spools Pins Don’t Always Give A False Set

Thank you for checking out this week’s Lock Picking Home School. Today we are focusing on why locks with spool pins do not always give a false set or counter rotation. This is often due to the “key bitting” and the placement of spool pins. As covered in video [269] spool pins need to be placed over shorter key pins to be effective. This ensures the thinner inside diameter is being utilized. If you only put spool pins over longer key pins only the larger outer diameter is utilized, and the spool will act like a standard pin.
One thing not covered in this video is how binding order can influence whether you get a false set or not. If you happen to pick all the spool pins in the lock first and only standard pins are left, there would be no false set. This topic will be covered in a future video.
