Great advice all round. On long tones and scales my teacher in the late 60s/70s said something like this “imagine you get a call from the Rolling Stones and they want you to finish the last tune of the night, solo, by doing your scale slowly up to a long note which you will hold at least 30seconds, and they’ll pay 10 000, more if you make the audience go wild after. You’re prepping every day of your life for every note you’ll play in the future. Start making it MUSICAL from right now” and that’s how I approach the ‘boring stuff’ since. He had a saying “stop chewing gum and start chewing steak “ when I’d be just doing an exercise just to finish it. Eventually the penny dropped - the boring part of the ‘boring’ exercise, was me. He used to Naima to prove his point - brutally - “does it sound like that man thinks long notes and slow scales are beneath him, does it sound boring, well does it. Does it sound like an exercise, boy”. Good times.

@@julianbrezon He started playing around 1910 before jazz truly existed and came up with jazz as it evolved. Great stories and explanations of the real history and lore. Hard as nails. Could find a way to needle you to try harder. Turned out so many good players. Best moment of my musical life was after a community charity gig when he came up to me and said ‘I brought my pupils along so they could see how it should be done. Ah well.’ One single sentence of near praise in all that time. Best I got before that was a nod. He did give a participation certificate every 6 weeks - your receipt for payment for your lessons.

Thank you! Invaluable information. Especially the advice about "No zero days". Better to have six months of only 10 minutes a day, as opposed to looking back at six months of no practice at all. Even the little moments can yield great, but results over time, including good time management, learning to get the most out of each practice session time. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

Haha, hopefully there are some 45-60 minute days in that 6 month period, maybe on the weekends, but, yes anything is better than zero!

Great work. Thanks. I would also add: buy a leak light. They are cheap. And one can rule out or confirm a leak that might be the cause of certain notes suddenly not playing well. Have a great day.

I would add.. play JS Bach. you will find no other route to transcendent beauty so clearly mapped out, and it jumps all over the instrument in unexpected ways..

At the beginning of the video you have a digital practice log ...what program is that?

That was actually just google calendar, my example of a "busy day", but I do like to use Toggl Track as a practice log.
