After seven days of being held on Islay by relentless high winds, we finally set sail from Port Ellen towards Craighouse Bay on the Isle of Jura and onward to Loch Sween and the Fairey Islands. We detect a broken main sail car which requires some unexpected boat repairs.
As we drop our anchor in the bay, we find solace beneath the towering presence of the magnificent Paps of Jura, witnessing their awe-inspiring beauty throughout the night. We share our anchoring technique with our trusted Rocna anchor.
We also seize the opportunity to pay a short visit to Jura's only whisky distillery not without leaving the place with a bottle of Jura's finest. As we continue our voyage across the Sound of Jura on a damp and windless day, our destination lies ahead - Loch Sween and the secluded Fairey Islands where we plan to sit out an approaching low-pressure system sweeping over the Outer Hebrides.
Embracing the serenity of this untouched sanctuary, we relish in days of solitude within our anchorage, accompanied only by wildlife, rocky islands, verdant trees, and the occasional passing sailing yacht.

Hi and welcome to our channel! Join us on our incredible sailing adventure aboard our beloved sailing yacht, Polaris Helvetica, a Bavaria Cruiser 46. After leaving our native Switzerland and settling in the UK almost two decades ago, we made a life-changing decision in 2021. With our three boys grown and flown, we bid farewell to the rat race in London and embraced a new chapter aboard Polaris as our primary floating home.
Throughout the years, we have embarked on numerous upgrades to enhance our sailing experience on Polaris. We swapped the standard propane gas cooker for an electric cooker and oven, installed a generator, and upgraded to a lithium (LiFePo) house battery bank. Additionally, we added 1,200W of solar panels and a water maker to ensure self-sufficiency on the open seas. The inclusion of a third reefing point on the mainsail and an inner forestay for a working jib and a storm sail further enhances Polaris as a comfortable and safe live-aboard yacht. We now sail along Scotland's breathtaking coastline, enjoying year-round living on our floating oasis.
Join us as Kathrin showcases her culinary talents in the galley, preparing delicious meals and mouthwatering baked treats while we navigate the seas. We have truly fallen in love with our new lifestyle, despite the tough decisions we had to make along the way. We bid farewell to our rented house in London and let go of belongings that couldn't fit aboard Polaris. The liberating feeling of knowing that everything we own is on our small sailing boat is indescribable. Our focus is on embracing freedom, exploring new destinations, uncovering the rich histories they hold, and forging connections with fellow adventurers we meet along the way.
Subscribe to our channel and join us on this extraordinary journey as we share the beauty of life afloat on SV Polaris Helvetica. Don't forget to hit the notification bell so you won't miss any of our captivating episodes. Fair winds and smooth sailing!

My wife and I are enjoying your videos very much. We too sail on the West Coast of Scotland. You probably know this, but the kill cord should be attached to you, not to the outboard - just in case you fall out of the boat.

Thanks! Yes, you are correct and we know. We haven‘t tried out this magnetic kill cord yet. We should have - and there is no excuse for not attaching it correctly. Believe it or not, on our 15hp petrol outboard we always use it… will do going forward, trying to set a good example.

Just watched #27 very interesting on the boat repairs and impressed with the eco dinghy engine 👍.... given your growing collection of whiskey, did you grab a bottle of Jura 🙂... this is such a great series and you and Kathrin make... its not just the sailing, the tips, the ongoing boat maintenance, but when you visit places, your narrative brings the location to you.. these are a pleasure to watch. Forwarded to the girlfriend who is now an avid fan... Great stuff, keep it coming, safe sailing and stay well. James Clifford (Jack)..

Hi James, many thanks for your comment! Much appreciated. Yes, we got ourselves a bottle of Jura (would have been rude not to…) but stocks deplete rapidly up here in the dry north…

Boy, you had some great weather for the sail to Jura. We have yet to visit Jura on any of or visits, but it's on the list. Really enjoying your videos. Cheers!

Lovely video! The views are amazing! Wouldn't it be lovely to have a scotch distillery right by the sea front, close to an anchorage somewhere in the Solent? :) Fair winds!

Could you make up a three-point bridle attached to the two D-rings on the bow and the attachment you are already using? Another solution might be to tow something like a weighted fender behind the dingy that would act as a drogue stabilising the dingy or a combination of both.

Thanks for your thoughts! That‘s exactly what I am going to do. I think some strong floating line might be good…
