Thats right folks, we finally built a 270 Degree Rephased XS650 Engine
Ok, here comes the flood of emails, questions, etc... So I'll just quote Wikipedia for the reason to rephase an OEM Firing Pattern of 360 (which is the stock XS650 engine configuration) to a 277 or 270
"The classic British parallel twins (BSA, Triumph, Norton, AJS & Matchless) had a 360° crankshaft that, compared to a single, gave twice as many ignition pulses, which were evenly spaced.
The Yamaha TRX850 had a 270° crank that allowed a more regular firing pattern than a 180° crank, and less regular than a 360° crank. This configuration has the best possible secondary engine balance for a parallel twin; its exhaust sound and power delivery is identical to a 90° V-twin." - Think Ducati or Suzuki SV Series engines
While we do a TON of 277 engines (it's the most cost effective rephase for the XS650) this one is 270 degrees. I've always wanted to build one. It requires a specially made center pin for the crank ($$$$$) and 2 donor cranks to build a single 270 crank. Then the camshaft and ignition must also match the new firing order of course.
What you see here, is a 750cc 270 Degree XS650 Engine, using JE Pistons, our HHB D-Shaped Ported Head, 5th Gear OD, HHB 6 into 7 Clutch mod, 5th Gear OD, HHB Oil Cooler and all the other little tricks we do at Hugh's HandBuilt
I hope you enjoy it. Go find our Blog, and check out the other cool things you can do with these bikes. They are a blast to own, mod and work on.
Hugh

In the early nineties, I was a marine recruiter in Richmond, and bought seven basket case XS 650's, and one that had sat in the rain minus spark plugs. I swapped top ends from one basket, built the others and sold, and rode the one for three or four years, with great pleasure. I'd had a 64 TR6R five or six years in the late seventies, a half a dozen harley's, and now ride a 78 Bonnie, just recently bought. I'd never delved into the XS's I had, just swapped parts to put friends on bikes, but I'm really intrigued by this as it's so easy to do on these engines. Much as I hate to say it, this was what Triumph should've done going to the T-140, the engineering on the XS is simply up to date with it's times, and while quite solid, sound, is merely putting modern technology in a time tested, proven bike. I'm seriously considering building up a custom motorcycle around this engine. Thanks, it really sounds great.

Lovely job! 270 parallel twins make such a lot of sense. Phil Irving pioneered the idea back in the 1930s but for various reasons it didn't catch on. I rode a friends rephased Laverda 750 and liked the concept so much I bought a Yamaha TDM 900. Lovin' the idea of a 270 degree XS65, a thinking man's motorcycle! Thanks for posting and good luck with the project.

It may be the only one in the USA NOW but it certainly is nothing new... the era of the XS650 is just long in the tooth considering it's age so that would explain the lack of rephased XSs. I had two in the 90s and raced one of them as a 750 with a specially profiled Web cam. Either way I'm so glad you have a video of this wonderful mod for the newly initiated to enjoy and appreciate.

Great sounding pipes. They look and sound a lot like Ducati Conti's

Is it just me or is the exhaust note noticeably different than a 277 degree rephase? GOD, it sounds great! By the way, I am on the hunt for a basket case XS650 for a cafe racer project, all inspired by you, Hugh.

There are many of these rephased cranks. The flat track world has been using them for a long time.

My first Harley was a 74 XLH, nothing but trouble, I put my TR6R in the shed for it, had six or seven since, still have an 88 inch custom I built, but haven't even registered it in a decade. I'm riding a 78 Bonnie, and am looking back thirty years, to some eight XS's I picked up, worked and sold, wishing I'd never gotten off any of them. I'm currently looking into an XS engine, precisely because they are so adaptable while mirroring everything I love about Triumphs. I'm getting my house painted, new flooring and got well over a hundred miles in yesterday, just chasing "paint and hardware", and really enjoying the summer. I tend to be much more "laid back" on the Bonnie, than ever on the Harley. I also am enjoying the very fine handling, something the XS's also were great for.

That's the best I've heard and XS sound... is it the rephase or the exhaust that get's that deep growl?

Could you do a 270 vs 277 direct sound comparison video with engine setups that are as equal as possible aside from the rephasing?

Did a 270 a couple of years ago and love it. Mines stock otherwise including the ignition (re-phased of course). Got over 2000 miles on it with no problems. Where did you get your ignition from? The most popular supplier couldn't help me with a 270, only offered 277.

Sounds wonderful. Don't really understand the advantage of rephrasing XS650 motor. More power ?

1) how do you re phase the cam? 2) since it passes through the cam, is the ignition advance unit left intact? 3) who's points ignition set is used? thanks.

Can you change that for every engine? I always though that the Fiat 500 Twinair, which has a 360 degree parallel twin, would sound awesome with a 270 degree crank!
