This is the 3rd installment of the Custom Twin Mandolin Project. There is a hidden subliminal message within. See if you can find it. LOL Support: / rosastringworks Website: www.rosastring...
Only 12 instruments waiting to be repaired? What are you going to do in your spare time? ;) I liked your "subliminal message". I know someone in the US that does some hunting. I've just sent him a message to find out if he might find himself having access to deer antler.
Is that mallet you used to tap down the sides in the form a part of a chair or table leg? Looks like a judge’s gavel... Thanks for showing us your methods; always entertaining!
I bet that it is very satisfying to do that. I use to make model air planes it was fun. But this is lot harder I would imagine to do. I will just watch you.
Hi Jerry tried to watch all the vid but in the hospital after a major surgery for the benefit of my health just recooperating finish one day soon looking good so far !
Hi Jerry, can you please elaborate a bit on the thickness of the side pieces? The Siminoff book says to thickness to 0.125” for the bending process with final sanding down to 0.110” - 0.115”. This seems awfully thick to me and I noticed you took the pieces all the way down to 0.070” prior to bending. I am on this step now and am sort of stuck because the practice bending so far has gone ...horribly 😂 Thank you!
If your Maple is real curly then you'll definitely want to go a maximum of about .080. I would recommend .070. Even then it's not easy. My new bending machine I made makes it far easier but even with that it's not simple especially if the wood is real real curly.
Okay thank you, I will give that a try. That’s much more in line with the McDonald book which I am using as a supplement, which says 0.085”. Trying to bend the 1/8” curly maple had me worried that I wasn’t going to be able to do it at all! As always, thank you for the videos and your responses. I am using them step by step as I build my first.
I didn't see the subliminal message but I have a strange urge to go out and look for some Deer antler 👍🏻 Peace and Love Jerry you are a magician with wood 👍🏻☮❤
Question: were the side pieces thin enough that your planer didn't have a fine enough adjustment to get them to dimension? Or maybe there was too much of a chance for tear-out with the planer? Your comment about the amount of sanding off camera makes me ask.
Planners are far too dangerous to use on that very brittle wood. In fact you can't even begin to plane it to thickness it will bust it in pieces. Ask me how I know.
Is the water you use for bending distilled? If no is there any problem with the minerals in any water or if it had been chlorinated (or other municipal water plant chemicals) that you're aware of?
Has minimal traces of iron due to regional water aquifer. It shows up as orange or faint brown ring on metal pans or tanks or water troughs on farms. Also , people have described the dreadnaught guitars he makes as sounding like cannons.
Great video!! I’m working on my first mandolin currently and the 1/8” curly is near impossible. Going to thin it on down. I’m currently using a homemade makeshift bending iron. Which iron are you using here? Thanks for posting this!
Sounds like you've got a problem like someone I know has. Her retired, thinking he'd have free time. He said he was busier after he retired than he was when he was working. I made a joke about getting a job to get a break. He had to think about it.
Really subtle subliminal message there Jerry!! Unfortunately I am in Blackpool, England, and the only deer we have are in the local zoo!! I will ask though.............. !!!! Great video.
Some thirty very relaxing minutes after work today, my bending of electrical cables doesn't cope with the curly sides, great video. Another millimeter guy!
Your skills are commendable and your attitudes and nonchalance way of making things work is fantastic. Keep up the good work and I will keep on watching and cheering for you on.
Coming along real nice there Jerry. I don't see any new cuts on your fingers, did you go on a holiday? Really miss the blue grass intervals of you and your band.
Nicely done Jerry! Message received😁 I only use moose antlers, works great for me, have you tried it? Keep the videos coming! Take care from millemeter land
Looks like the twins are going to grow up beautiful like your previous instruments. Hope you find a supplier of deer antler too. I guess with your work load your really going to have to keep on truckin. Take care of yourself and well my friend.
i just got my first mandolin today :D thats how you know you made a good inpretion :) gues that hapens when somone with autism gets intrested in something :)
