Jury was a courtroom drama which aired on BBC1 in 1983 and, since then, appears to have disappeared into absolute obscurity. Therefore, I was delighted to dig this episode up which looks at the story of juror Gerald (Hugh Lloyd). Sourced from Betamax.

I vaguely remember this series being on at the time then so too. As you really say, it was only shown the once with no repeat at all oddly in a way. I wonder why not though? Whatever, thank you anyway!

Thanks. I'd never heard of this show. It's layers on layers of bleakness but is exceptionally good. Hugh Lloyd and Peggy Shields are just superb in such complicated roles. Gerald in particular is such a hard part to play and Lloyd could have easily gone for gurning and dramatics, but instead he takes us right to the heart of such a broken, delusional figure. Andrew McCulloch is also wonderful as the son who resents his father but in many ways has become him. And Tom Mennard as Billy - it takes you a while to see that Gerald keeps Billy in his life because Billy is honest with himself in ways Gerald can't be (notice the line about how Billy was there in his childhood [a terrible childhood], then returned years later [when Gerald started to see just what a failure his life was, he just couldn't admit it to himself). A very rich, harrowing episode, made even better by the lack of modern tropes (montages, fuzzy lighting, quick cuts).

In some ways, the series was similar to Crown Court or Rumpole of the Bailey, the series of old both which were on ITV really at the same time as this was on BBC1 of course I guess at the time too. Peggy Shields later turned up on Brookside on Channel 4. Hugh Lloyd starred with Victoria Wood on her As seen on TV show series in one of her sketches from what I remember too, which was on BBC2 at the time.
