Even though The Magician's Nephew is my absolute favorite Narnia book, I'm really not sure you should read it before Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, because as a prequel, MN is very much meant to explain certain details you should already know from LWW. However, the Narnia series is fun and you can feel free to read it in whatever order you feel like. MN in particular is interesting right now because I feel like "The Boy and the Heron" partially feels like an adaptation of it.

Thank you for letting me know! Might start with the actual first book then 😊💛

@@christy-anne-jones You're welcome! You can depart from the publication order a little if you want - Magician's Nephew and The Horse and His Boy are both a little outside the main chronology and you can just as easily read them right after LWW - I remember liking both of them a lot more than Prince Caspian. Good luck with your reading and your health!

I definitely agree with this - and I would also actually recommend reading in published order. Certainly how I read it as a child. One of my children was put off the series because the school got them to read MN first - while I enjoyed the book, I feel it is drier and less immediate than the rest. Kim

I'd definitely start the Narnia series from Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. It's crucial for the understanding of the whole concept of the series. And also, that was the order that Lewis prefered.

I was that weird kid who read Victorian novels for fun in elementary school. Then I took a class in Caribbean lit in college and Wide Sargasso Sea was one of the books and I was obsessed with it for the longest time. It felt like those moments when you suddenly realize as an adult that something about your childhood was completely different than what you always thought it was. I still randomly think about that book even though it’s been years since I last read it. If anyone has recs for similar novels, please share!

I teach 5th grade and I have read The Bad Beginning as a read aloud to my classes for more than 10 years. The kids get totally sucked in, and the series stays checked out from the library. I will admit that I seem to notice something new that I’ve not before each time I read it. We also read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as a novel study. I agree with others that The Magician’s Nephew might be a little confusing if read first. Great choices on your TBR list.

Strange Beasts of China sounds interesting to me. I should check that up. You may have already known it, there's a sequel to Days at the Morisaki Bookshop that's coming out in July titled More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop. I think you'll love it. Also, have you heard of Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan? It's a retelling inspired by the Mid-Autumn Legend (Chinese) and I've just finished it. I have a feeling it could be something right up your alley.

The Ice Palace it's just beautiful, I wanted to make a little comic about it, because the imaginary it's marvelous, one of my favorite books. The Morisaki Bookshop it's told in a wonderful prose, the only thing that I didn't like was how the author portrayed the character of Momoko, because it has a lot of gender bias.
