This video is a literal serotonin dump. I can honestly rewatch this over and over and I do. This video is regular programming on tv during the spring and summer. The information led my buddies and me to some of the BEST spots in the Keys. David, you rock buddy!!!
You have also made our day! Thanks for connecting. We are currently making The Bars of Palm Beach County. We live here and figured we oughtta share our favorites!🍹🥂🍺🍷
I lived in Key West as a Cat Marine Mechanic, single and straight on a 28 ft sloop 1977 to 1984. There was no Hogs Breath Saloon at the location but the Key West Tee-shirt shop! The Hogs Breath started business in 1988. The sign says est 1976 but that was when the tee shirt shop started. The Green Parrot was a dive back then that the locals went to have a beer without the tourist around. Their Tee-shirts said "See The Lower Keys On Your Hands And Knees" ! The Hemingway look alike contest is always held at the present Sloppy Joe's and Jack Waterberry won the 1986 contest. Mel Fisher frequented the Half Shell Raw bar and not very often the Schooner Wharf Bar! I know because I knew Mel and Pete Poppes his engineer as I worked on his boats! Key West was a sleepy town when I arrived in 77 with a laid back attitude that I loved, BUT when the tourist business went wild, IT RUINED Key West! I recommend staying North of Key West in a Mom & Pop motel and get a skiff with an outboard to knock around. Then drive to Key West to get the tourist bug over with. I now live in Lake Tahoe.
I'm not a big fan of Key West, it's too expensive. And with no natural sand beaches, it kind of just a drinkers town. The upper Keys are more interesting to me. I enjoyed reading how things use to be.
@@VolcanoTimeLapse Well, I just had a great breakfast at the Red Hut a Lake Tahoe locals favorite! I recommend the Red Hut Rosti which is hash browns with ham/bacon/red pepper/onions and cheese all grilled together. I always have two sunny side up eggs on top as well. total cost with a never ending cup of hot chocolate with tip was $16.75. So now that I made you hungry, if you ever make it here you will have a great place for breakfast at least. I also recommend staying in the Southern end of Lake Tahoe as it is much cheaper as the Northern half have raised noses. The summers are fabulous with maybe a week of over 85 F temps. There are hundreds of great hiking trails. I left FL and am over the Caribbean as well that I have been there done that.
Dave I wish you did news report every night . The way you speak Is honest and respectful Like a Conservative Republican. I'm so sick of the left wing leftist lying corrupt media it's unbelievable.
I have just enjoyed being with you on your very Informative journey around the beautiful area of the Keys,I know that I could never visit myself, and thank you for your Wonderful Relaxed show,Kenny ,London
Great list. Actually staying at the Dove Creek resort on our way down to Key West next week (where your closing shots were filmed). Before even seeing this video, I had a good half of the bars you mentioned on my "to do" list. Now to add a few more. LOL
Absolutely brilliant filming and commentary that has whetted my appetite for a trip from Great Britain next March. The information provided was first class and I just cannot wait to sample it for myself. Thank You so much for posting.
Looking forward to Part 2, covering Sharkey's, Pilot House, Florida Boy, Herbie's, Barnacle Barney's, Keys Fisheries, Castaways, No Name Pub, Square Grouper's New Joint, Hogfish, the Bull, Irish Kevin's, and the Retro Room.
Living in Key West 1977 to 1984 as a Caterpillar Mechanic, I powered many a drug boat that had to be fast, with long range yet low key to avoid suspicion. Most of those places you mention were not around yet.
Watching for the hundredth time. This video is the forth video in my overseas Highway playlist. Great video Dave. Wonder what Alabama Jacks fritter’s cost now? Haha… enjoy your stuff. Great voice.
How could anyone hit the dislike button on this video? Great video, love the keys just got back. I head down about 3 times a year and have been to all but 4 four places in the video have to hit them next time
God bless Lazy Days and there best dish on the menu The Grouper Lorenzo with the 50/50 mashed potatoes, MMMM great video; great place to stay is Kon Tiki.
Thankyou for letting us tag along with you while you took us on that amazing journey around the keys !My old Pop when he was alive used to say :- " you can alway tell a lot about a chap - When you're lost while driving and so you stop to ask him for a location - And he will either give you directions usìng Public bars or Churches as a directional aid " !
To those suggesting tons of great bars I omitted--I've put together a new list and will undertake to make another trip before too long. Thanks for all the nominations for mentions next time!
I just watched both of your bar tour videos.. living on the prairies in Canada, I’ve really enjoyed them :). You however missed Sharky’s bar and grille, key largo. I love that place! Attached to a dive shop, and scuba charter base. Your vids remind me I have to get back down to the keys this December. Thank you :)
Maybe the best video I've watched yet on making your way down through the Keys, especially if you like to bar hop. Great video, thanks for taking the time to make it and share. Cheers to you......
Brass Monkey (That funky Monkey) in Marathon, Coconuts and No Name Pub on Big Pine Key are 3 more dive bars that are mostly locals only. Back in the 90's and early 2000's, Clarence Clemons from the E-Street Band used to show up and play from time to time. They also have one of the biggest gatherings--Christmas in July, and New Years in July a week later. There is so much drinking that Monroe County sets up sobriety checks on US1 and pauses almost every driver.
My wife and I did this in 2016 (As much as we could) It was an absolute blast!! We also added in Snorkeling and SNUBA to sober up a bit. Flew into Lauderdale and flew home out of Key West. We talk about that trip all the time and have been back twice.
One Day ! - One Day ! - I will get across and taste your fine beers ! - This list is a great step forwards into where to visit & in what order ! - Many thanks indeed -Steve B - British Isles
I swear I’ve heard this guys voice somewhere before. Definitely a voice for radio. Terrific job of bar hopping! I’m going to explore more of these places. I am saddened by the tearing down of one of my favorite places. The “dead animal bar “ safari lounge.
Faro Blanco was our fav place to stay at back before it was "upgraded" they had small cottages to stay in, Anglers Pub and Kelseys resturant were the best palces to eat and drink in Marathon(Vaca Key)!!!!! Miss those days......oh yea they had the biggest freshwater pool in the keys!!!!
I love Your key West videos. We need a new one. You are great at these. Anita seems like a sweet person. I’m sure she is. You two seem like the perfect couple. You both are enjoyable to watch.
Watching this was like taking a vacation. I've been to a few of these bars. There was a bar called Salty's in Marathon you would have liked but it burned down several years back.
Always wanted to visit the Keys - But have a pub crawl never crossed my mind (honest) -That is until I saw this great vid both informative and entertaining - I cracked open a sherbert while watching ! - Thanks for sharing !
Fun and interesting video. I’m delighted you apparently sailed right through the entire Lower Keys, missing at least three bars worthy of mention. Come again.
Love No Name. Didn't detour off Route 1 this time but agree with you that it's aces. Others have alerted me that I skipped their favorites too. I will undertake to fix that next trip.
MM 68 in Layton, The Florida Boy Bar and grill offers Florida's best Chicken and Waffles and the coldest beer in the keys. Tucked nicely into the Lime Tree Bay Resort's parking lot, beach swings, and pool and hot tub will make your rvening complete after a game of corn hole... Try it out!!
Coming south out of Miami, you Don't want to stop for gas in Homestead. The locals park at pumps and just hang out,,taking up space. It was long years ago, as gas was $1.
Great video but you missed some great ones in Marathon and some others on lower keys. Drove right past Keys Fisheries to get to sunset grill no name pub on no name key lots of others.
Nice video. Looks like you had a great time! As others have said, many bars missed, but they've added most of the ones I would recommend. You really should have had the Hogfish sandwich, it's delicious! Next time you can get your Hogfish at the Hogfish Bar & Grill on Stock Island. A must stop if you're in Key West.
Lived in the Keys in 1979 to 1981 and worked for Hardaway Construction building the Draw Bridge located at Smugglers Cove. It's hard to believe a guide could overlook the Tiki Bar and the Quarterdeck Bar at Holiday Isle. That was the place to go. We use to see Ted Williams at the Trading Post where we got sandwiches made by Sam Lopez at the meat counter.
You are right. No Name was one of the first bars I ever visited in the Keys because it was close to a cousin's house. But I did include it at the end of my second video called "20 More Florida Keys Bars in 6 Days." Next time I'll put it first! 😁
@@thenewsdudeabides yea, my brother took me to no name for the first time last june, he is still a "local" in west palm where we grew up, so he knows some local spots.. he has a boat we trailer sometimes, but we just did the tourist trip in june, and had so much fun. played golf in marathon, and my first time actually going to key west. the tourist trip with some bridge fishing and actually playing golf was so much fun, we are actually doing it again NEXT WEEK!! I will check out your 20 more video, and hopefully check out another new place you pointed out in your vids! so much fun!! thanks!
catrashoo ...Most are back in business but not all. Snappers in Key Largo was totally destroyed by storm surge but is serving drinks and a pared down menu from a temporary spot while they rebuild. Cheeca Lodge reopens in March but total reconstruction will be finished in April. Haven't been back since Irma. Visiting in summer. Have fun!
just after Alabama Jack's, first bar at Key Largo is Gilbert's...is that not in business anymore? We used to call it Tiki Bar hopping from Homestead AFB down into the keys. Cool video...cheers
