gu is the measure word for smell. 一股臭味，一股香味，一股味道等等。No, you can use "you shenme chouwei", because when you use "shenme", you're actually not sure about what smell you're getting. However, you could say something like " 我好像闻到了什么味道。“ It seems that I smell something (bad).
