This 5 year natural transformation is truly amazing when you consider not just the strength and size improvements made by Jesse but also the hurdles and obstacles he has had to overcome to do this. Jesse shares for the first time publicly, his long struggles with clinical depression and anxiety.

Getting out of bed and to work could be a challenge for Jesse on many days. The thought of getting to the gym to workout seemed like being asked to climb a mountain. That is, until he found refuge in the gym. The walls of they gym provided a freedom from tormenting thoughts that allowed him to not only grow his body, but his outlook on life as well.
As many who have watched this channel have witnessed however, the journey was quickly interrupted by a near fatal car accident. Jesse sustained head trauma that took him away from training all together and greatly limited his ability to exert high effort when he finally returned to the gym. During this time, the habitual improvements he made were gone and he once again found it very hard to be consistent with any workout, let alone one advised to him by Coach Cavaliere. The trauma also made the depressive thoughts he silently carried around with him, even more persistent and pervasive.
Jesse's chronic sadness made eating difficult. He often times found himself having to force feed himself in order to provide enough calories to attempt to build muscle. Maintaining an appetite was a struggle. Given how skinny he was to start this was something that made it almost impossible for him to gain muscle at a rate that perhaps others his age would experience. Without enough high quality nutrients, and calories in general, Jesse was finding it almost impossible to support any of the time he spent working out in the form of new muscle gains.
Little by little, under the guidance of a professional strength coach, Jesse started seeing significant strength and muscle gains. All the while that his compound lifts like the squat, bench, deadlift, overhead press and weighted pullups were improving, he was also working on building up his size through the appropriate accessory exercises.
Essentially, Jesse was following a hybrid strength and powerlifting program like BEAXST that was taking him to all new levels of muscle development and size. His confidence was growing and his gains kept coming.
Through love, support and the outreach by many in the AX community Jesse has been able to find acceptance and peace. In this space he has been able to appreciate the journey of fitness and its value far beyond the building of muscle. It has helped him bridge the gap of silence that prevented him from expressing what he had been dealing with for so many years.
Now he hopes his video and story will do the same for you if you find yourself in a similar position as he did.
The transformation of Jesse is one of my proudest moments as a strength and conditioning coach. Watching him transform not only his body, his strength and his size but his confidence and most of all his acceptance and love of himself has been one of the most rewarding things to watch. Jesse is like a son to me in many ways. As expected, you will run into the situations where your words or advice may not be followed or listened to. But ultimately, when push comes to shove and the rubber hits the road, the willingness to turn to others for guidance and knowledge winds up producing the most direct path to results.
I would love it if you are reading this if you could leave Jesse some love in the comments below.
If you or someone else suffers from depression, please reach out. Allow someone to help you. It's no longer a stigma but rather becoming the norm in this day of heightened pressures and expectations through social media.

As a father not knowing our daughter had anxiety and severe depression, getting a phone call from her therapist saying she was at those extreme low points and self harming came as a shock. I sat in the car after the call in tears for hours. No, in tears for a year, on and off. Great message Jesse. Admitting the struggles, the difficult path openly is a positive step. My daughter did the same. Said she is still here with us now because of us. Jesse, the struggles will get better. Each year is a stepping stone. Our daughter is now married, bought a house with a loving partner and her job is helping underprivileged children. Proud of you mate.

I'm a 64 year old retired Navy veteran who has also suffered with depression these past 12 years, after experiencing a few minor heart attacks due to coronary artery disease. I had zero motivation and became very weak physically. After contemplating it for a year, I finally got the motivation to start resculpting my body and gaining some strength 3 months ago. I hit the gym 4 days per week and I don't play around. Day one I could only bench 160 for one rep. So I started repping with 120. Today, I benched 240 one time rep max, and I'm repping with 200 to 170 within 5 sets.. I've gained strength, muscle, a 4 pack (that stubborn bottom belly is stubborn), and most of all my mental state of mind is 100% better. I feel so much better. I look forward to the next year. That 6 pack will appear! I resonate with the content of this video. Thank you for sharing. You motivate me. 👊

Mahalo for sharing this Jesse. I have suffered from bipolar disease for most of my adult life. I started working out when I was 25 to feel better about myself and have never stopped and it saved me. It saved me for the beautiful life that was waiting for me. This really hits home for me man and I'm sure for a lot of other people watching too. I've struggled with weight my whole life. At my worst in 2013, 30yo, 113lbs at 5'9", I looked at myself in the mirror, disgusted, and said enough is enough. 6 years later, I was 165 lean pounds. My health and confidence were at an all time high. Then, 18 months ago, I was hit with something that put me in the deepest depths of anxiety and depression I have ever experienced. In the short year and a half since I've lost everything I had gained. I'm almost right back to where I started and struggling to find the motivation and courage to get back. Like so many Athlean-X videos, the timing on this is uncanny. First thing tomorrow morning, I'm going to the gym. I've transformed my body once, I can do it again damnit! Thanks for this one Jesse, your journey is an inspiration for us all.

Appreciate you brother. I connected with this. My son was born with a chronic liver disease 9 months ago. He was transplanted at 44 days old. Watching him go through that and being with him in the hospital for his recovery completely demolished me. I’ve been sad and angry and scared every minute of every day since he was diagnosed. Training has been an outlet for those emotions. Showing up at the gym isn’t always easy for me… but I leave feeling a little lighter. If I can leave a little bit of the fear and the anger, and the sadness there when I leave then I can be strong for my son. And that’s what I want for him. He’s strong so I want to be strong for him too. I watch your videos most nights before I fall asleep and they really help me. I’m not a big guy. Haven’t been training my whole life. Struggle with getting my calories in and I gain muscle quite slowly. But I keep showing up. Hearing you say that you are proud of yourself reminded me to be proud of myself. So thank you.

Thank you for putting out this video about your journey. This hits home for me in many ways. I trained when I was in my 20's getting bigger in the gym from all the years of being picked on as I was very skinny at 145 lbs and a height of 6'5" going into college. At my peak I weighed in at 212 lbs done all naturally. When I got into my late 30's, the drive to maintain that intensity dropped due to life responsibilities. I then was struck with the dreaded C word....cancer. Was Stage 3b colon cancer. Had to go through surgery and chemo. After that, I got married and had a kid. Didn't have any downtime to process all the mental challenges that had been thrown on me as all of the prior literally happened in a year to two year span. Then problems developed in my marriage. Challenges at work ensued. I got hit with a second cancer. Appendix cancer stage 0. I hit rock bottom with depression which culminated in losing a ton of weight because I like you just wasn't motivated to eat. I didn't sleep either. Spent a year of only getting 2 to maybe 3 hours of sleep a night. I didn't realize how far I've fallen until two things had happened. A friend's daughter made a comment about how skinny I was and a routine oncology appointment where I weighed in at 168 lbs. This was a wake up call for me as I didn't even recognize the person I was seeing in the mirror anymore. This began the slow clawing back of myself and my self worth. My marriage spiraled down to an emotionally abusive one where my now ex wife was hammering me down to the point where I was contemplating seeking a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I decided to do one thing that I have not done in the past. Put myself first. I had always done as much as I could to help others and at times to my own detriment. I came to a realization that no one is going to look after me more than me. That I really can't be a good person to anyone that's important to me if I don't even respect myself. So I started the journey. Fortunately, I had some free weight equipment in my house. Well, out in the shed in the backyard as my then wife forced me to move the equipment out of the workout room in the basement so she could have her own equipment there. I spent a month working out in that shed in some times blistering summer heat. I wanted to prove to myself I'm committed to turn things around. And sure enough, I was able to stay committed. I then joined a gym. I had to work through the embarrassment of barely being able to bench 95 lbs when in my glory days I was benching 305 lbs. Fast forward to today. I'm 52. Weigh in at 195 lbs. Worked up the courage to not let anyone abuse me and ended the nightmare marriage. Worked hard to repair the damage that was invoked by my ex wife's alienation of my daughter. While my time is limited with my daughter due to how family law is set up in this country, I make the best of it. My daughter went from not wanting to be near me to know yelling "DADDY!" in the most cutest heartwarming way when she sees me. I won't say everything has been roses along this rebuilding. I was hit with further health issues outside of cancer. I developed hypertension due in no small part from the stress of the divorce, alienation of my daughter, and the mental challenges of being a cancer survivor. I also have the athletic widow maker that was found during a routine CT scan for my cancer follow ups. I have a dilated aortic root. In other words an aortic aneurysm. My cardiac team has pushed for me to stop weight training as they're worried the strain from weights will cause a rupture. I've modified my workouts with this in mind but I haven't stopped weight training. I'm 4 years in from that diagnosis and so far that aneurysm has stayed stable. I have set a goal for myself to try to put on another 20 lbs of muscle. It's going to be hard to achieve with being a busy single father and my advancing age. Will I get there? Who knows. But I'm ok with not getting there. To me it's the motivation to keep trying. Especially since I've been seeing how life is very fragile and fleeting with the recent passing of a very close friend from the same cancer I had. She and two others I've lost were near and dear to me over the past 7 years. I've had the moments of why am I here while they are not. I've taken the stance that I can't squander my life as it would be disrespectful to the memories of these very special people. So I push on trying to live life to its fullest and discovering all the beauty of what being alive can bring. Sorry for the novel and thank you if you or anyone else has read this to the end. Thank you Jesse for the courage to put this out as a beacon of hope for others suffering.

Even if you don't gain like some others, you are so far ahead of the game building strength! Not sure how old you are, but the stats on strength and longevity are profound. Also, know that though there are advantages to bigger muscles, nothing in life that is really important is dependent on them. Not to say they aren't worth good effort, but we can spend decades being down about our bodies when there are other areas that have great payoff for our attention, too. Work out so that you can pursue those with vigor!

This is beautiful. I also suffer from severe depression and generalized anxiety disorder. I’ve been working out for about 5 years, as well. Some days I’m amped for the gym, and some days I’m so depressed or anxious that I sit and cry because I just can’t bring myself to workout, and I feel like a failure. The progress makes me feel great, but to me, it’s never enough. I’m always critiquing myself and comparing myself to others. Some days I feel jacked, and others I feel tiny and skinny fat. I’m 6’2”/215 lbs, with pretty decent muscle mass, but the anxiety and depression create so much body dysmorphia. I’m hoping that I can continue to work through this, until it’s no longer an issue. Keep up the great work, man. We love you.

I relate to this so strongly. Started lifting when I was 18 (6 years ago) when I had severe depression (weighed 118lbs at 5'8 at 12% bf). Most days I woke up and didn't see the point of getting out of bed, moving or even existing. The gym (and running) grounded me. It pushed me to do at least something of "use" where I could grow. Fast forward 6 years I'm 153lbs at 14% bf (aiming for 170lbs), depression only hits on occasion and I'm mostly energetic and optimistic. Crushing virtually every area of my life due to boosted confidence, energy, mindset shift etc. Guys, it really can make ALL the difference. It's a marathon, not a sprint and the road has potholes in it.

Think of your workouts as a brick. If you watch a mason and you stand back as he lays one brick. It's hard to see a change from him laying one brick or even 10 bricks. But if he is left alone to lay brick after brick he can build a very big house. Each workout you put in is another brick in the your house. If you stop laying those bricks it's hard to get the change you desire. This helps me stay consistent in my workouts. Maybe it can help you.

Nice to hear from you, Jesse. You asked for my journey so here it goes: I was bullied for large parts of my school time until I was about 17, I was / am introverted and at that time very weak. In sports I was only good once there was a ball involved or it was endurance and I gave a lot of effort, but I was physicaly far inferior to my peers. I started fitness with 10 push ups. The next day I was so sore I could barely move my arms and my form was probably very poor. I haven't stopped since. I am now 4.5 years into my journey. The first year consisted of a lot of push ups, bw squats, curls and some abs, rows and ocasionaly jogging. I slowly got myself some equiment over time (I train at home because I live quite far of any public gym), now for about a year and a half (soon to be two) I have pretty much all I need at home. Towards the end of year one and into year two, I started getting better at sports, then I finished what is about equivalent to highschool and was working part time for a year and took the time to improve further. After that, I started studying for what I though to be my dream job, but that turned out to be wrong. I was now clueless about what to do and we were almost a year into pandemic, so I concentrated on fitness again, going form my fattest to my leanest. Deadlifting about 2.2 time bodyweight (with form I now heavily disapprove of, but wasn't aware of at the time), doing 12 pullups in a row, where I started at 0 and finally got my squat form going. Then I started studying something else and liked it and even though it was hard, that just motivated my to try harder. I accepted that with less time for training I would likely stagnate for a while, which I did almost. About half a year in I was terrified of the exams at the end of the year and I decided to socially Isolate myself, keeping my head down, just working, with fitness serving as my favourite hobby and much needed diversion. After crushing the exams I dieted again since I gained quite a bit of weight over about a year and a half. Having now temporarly stopped the calorie defficit, I noticed that I gained quite a bit of muscle over the year alongside competence in the lifts. But with the preshure from the exams released I also realised that I hate myself. Both for my appreances (I have problems with my skin since I was a small child) and for my avoidance of social encounters. Now I am also working on that, while working out a bit more as last year, being as fit as I have ever been, while I keep studying. Aside from being relatively smart in sciences, fitness has, despite my small frame leading to not impressive numbers on my lifts, uncovered my greatest strength: my selfdiscipline. I can work an something and I won't stopp until it is done, which fitness never is. I owe a lot of my knowledge of fitness to Jeff and I have always looked up to you, Jesse, as someone about as skinny as you, I felt like I am following your path of fitness making progress as you did.

I'm in the same predicament as you Jesse as far as mental health and fitness goes. I am 32 years old and I suffer from severe depression and anxiety as well. It was kind of bitter sweet to hear you say that you go through the same thing, as I would never wish this on anybody, but kind of comforting to hear that I am not going through this alone. When I was at my worst last year, I was 145 lbs, the lightest I have been since maybe early high school. I really had no desire to be alive. I isolated myself from everybody. Anger, self-loathing and fear controlled my life. I admitted myself into the hospital, started seeing a therapist, and began to work out. Lifting weights and physically exerting myself to exhaustion has been a HUGE stress reliever for me and it has allowed me to find out who I am. I am 185 lbs today and proud of myself for the progress I have made. I appreciate the message Jesse and I am happy to see you are killing it in the gym as well man.

Well done Jessie on your very open and honest video. I'm a 51 year old man that has had numerous bouts of depression over many years. I so wish 30 years ago people were as willing to shine a light on this topic as we are today - life would have been much easier. I still train and it helps me loads. My real problem is injuries that sit alongside the ageing process I get by this by focusing on what I can do and not what I can't Keep up the good fight - you're smashing it

At 56, I feel your pain Robert. 30 years in the Canadian military brought with it many physical and mental injuries. I try and tell my retired military brothers and sisters that "exercise-is-the-medicine". It's better than laying on the couch in front of the TV complaining about how how bad everything hurts. I tell them to just get out and move, do something, and those aches and pains will not be as bad.

You have every right to be proud, Jesse. I've watched your growth, both physically and emotionally, in front of the camera over the last several years, and it's clear that you have put the work in. Keep your chin up, and thanks for the honesty, it means more than you know. You guys have a great channel.

I started my journey just before Covid shut the world down. I was 47and completely out of shape and tired of looking and feeling like sh!t. The first thing I stumbled across was Jeff and Jesse and AthleanX videos. You guys have been with me the whole way. Jeff’s 10 minute no equipment chest workout was a godsend during Covid as I worked out in closed school playgrounds and business front lawns. Your advice and lessons and your transformation has changed my life and I thank both of you for that. I love that we are both from CT too!! I am proud of you Jesse for sharing this and attempting to reach others. Now maybe helping people mentally as well as physically and inspiring them with your story. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you

This is exactly the video I needed, currently in my first year of college and I’ve been having a hard time, often feeling down and alone and having constant anxiety. But I also became super consistent at the gym. Been watching you and Jeff since my freshman year of highschool and never thought I’d see a vid like this here. You’re a huge inspiration and congrats, I’ve watched your gains since the beginning and it was awesome seeing you grow. Thank you.

Hey Jesse, I watched your progress since you started out with your appearance in one of the videos on AthleanX. Thank you for your honesty about your depression. I guess that's something many suffer from and too many stay silent about. Don't care about those who don't get to the point of the message that you're delivering. You have already become a beacon of encouragement for so many people all around the globe. Without you AthleanX would not be the same. Thank you!

Long story, but I've never shared this all before. I used to be close to 300lbs (at 6'1") when I graduated high school in 2010. Working a somewhat physical job for several years afterward got me down to about 220 where I maintained until I dropped another 30 pounds in 2016 by forcing myself not to eat for a few months. I never drank or did drugs, but I regularly ate pizzas, cheesesteaks, Chinese, potato chips, you name the junk and I loved it. So suddenly stopping all that caused me to drop weight fast, which made me feel great in the short term, but this lead me to a horrible state where I would just balloon if I ate anything, only adding to my stress and frustration. I got an exercise bike to make up for my new desk job and lack of regular exercise, and for about 3 years I forced myself to ride almost daily to keep that scale from showing anything over 190. The number on the scale would make or break me. I had my good and bad periods but not a day went by that I didn't dread having to ride that bike for 30-45 minutes, as if it were homework and I couldn't relax until it was complete. It was something I had to shoehorn into my schedule because I hated it so much. I resented having to restrict myself from eating so much that I sometimes even got upset when other people could eat whatever they wanted, yet I felt I couldn't. It wasn't jealousy, it was self pity. I sat across from my girlfriend watching her enjoy her ice cream one night, and all I could think was, "Why can't I just relax enjoy myself too? Why can't I have ice cream?" It brought me to tears right there at the table, and my eyes well up now reliving it. I hated myself because I had zero self respect for so long and now I was paying for it. Then in June 2022 I discovered Jeff and Jesse, and I was skeptical because I always thought for some reason that "cardio cardio cardio" was the answer. But Jeff convinced me to try strength training, and I don't say this lightly but quite frankly my life has been changed forever. I don't even watch any other fitness channel; Jeff has steered me in the right direction and I trust him. I'm eating clean and training 5-6 days a week, and I don't dread it - I look forward to it STILL! Training is simply part of my schedule, not something I fit into my schedule (one of many mottos I got from Jeff). I don't think about the scale at all, but I am losing inches off my waist while gaining lots of muscle all over. I'm in the best shape of my life and I aim to be able to say that for the rest of my life. I don't worry myself anymore, I just follow my routine, give it all I've got, and stay consistent. I know that I won't fail if I keep this up and that's reassuring to me. I only wish I could help other people to understand how much simpler it all is than it seems, because that's one of the biggest things that held me back for so long. I didn't know what to do, or what not to do. On the occasion that I feel less than motivated, I remember how good it makes me feel to push through and do this for myself. I remember that I'm better today than I was yesterday, and I'll say the same again tomorrow. I remember that I'm a champion, because champions keep going where ordinary people give up. Thank you Jeff, and thank you Jesse. I wish you the best.

Man, Jesse - thanks a ton for this message. I’m right there with you, but only recently diagnosed. Your words about having next to no motivation is sobering and relatable.
