@@rlsedition Dodge Hornet is essentially rebadged Alfa Romeo Tonale with different bumpers. It’s not Dodge and I personally find it a bit disgusting. They have ruined the Tonale which I really like. I would have much preferred if they had used the Jeep Compass for Hornet. Hornet will confuse Dodge people with Italian engineering. It doesn’t even deserve the attention. Alfa Romeo is the star.
@@mikojarvinen6273 I'm with you on this issue. Alfa did all the work on the Tonale only to give it all to Dodge virtually unchanged. Hornet may confuse Dodge buyers, but it will further hurt the Alfa Romeo brand in the US market when it's the same car at a lower price point. Maybe Dodge needed a new small car entry, but the way Stellantis chose to create the Hornet was a death nell to Alfa in the US. Why kill Alfa to benefit Dodge?
I test drove the 160hp version and was wondering why Alfa bothered. Thankfully, the 280hp PHEV looks likely to change that view. The thing is we don’t yet get it in Oz. At last a decent review of the Tonale. There is hope for it. 👍🤞
Guys can you please talk about manual shifting? Can you hold on to the revs to the limiter? What issues did you have manual shifting? Im hoping for a car that can do it all, commute on ev, long lazy drives in normal mode/comfort, and quick B road driving banging through the gears, downshifting etc.
Looks like a great car. I'm a fan of a plug in hybrid. The best of both worlds in my view, just as long as cost per unit of electric doesn't shoot up. Why weren't you playon "On days like these" by Matt Munro when you were on that cool road? And yes it does look slow on the video! Obviously it wasn't. Great vid Pedro. Keep 'em coming.... :)
Was able to watch this just before leaving for work today! Great video glad to see a more powerful version of this little suv and I agree Sir Pete a even higher performance version would be fantastic! So awesome to see you and steph back together in a video! Was a hoot watching you to just enjoy the car and seeing your reactions to how much fun it was!
Enjoyed that as much as you did Pete! Brilliant drive and a good car, the brakes overheated, but as you rightly said, you wouldn’t be driving it in such conditions anyway. Cheers! Tom
Alfa seem to be believing their own hype as Tonale's are stupid money now... mid-range you're looking at the sharp end of 60,000€ - you can get in an ex demo Stelvio or a new Mazda CX5 for the same money - or like-for-like, a Mazda CX-30 (arguably a tad prettier, as good a drive and way better specced) for 40K
@@PetrolPed True O King - but it's not like it's another "benefit" of electricfication, it's a choice some manufacturers make. If you want an AWD Tonale (a pretty reasonable request given it's supposed to be a "sport(ing) utility vehicle") you are forced to buy a 1.3 Mulitiar plug-in hybrid with all the attendant extra costs and (frankly) bullshot of charging the bloody thing. Compare and contrast CX-30, which might give some away in raw performance (although not much in real life unless you really intend caning your 50-plus-grand Tonale everywhere) but is 12 grand less for a way superior interior spec, arguably better safety (gizmos and NCAP) and still rates A on the efficiency scale...
I love my Giulia but am underwhelmed by the Stelvio. Maybe the Tonale will suit me better. Hard to believe I saw one in Arese over three years ago and it's only just about to come to the US.
@@vg4902I drive the 160hp which I bought 3 months ago and I can safely say that car is not slow at all especially in dynamic mode. Never really need more than that as I am mostly stuck in traffic
I hope you calculated the MPH afterwards. 177kph is a bit more than 90..(let's say 110) Lovely video. If they would only put that drivetrain in a small coupé with retro Alfa looks. (Emilia GT???)
glad you told us the speed on track....Stef was right , it looked slow.....so numbers made things much more impressive...looks like a great car with ev range enough to not need the engine on a normal daily basis
Hi. Another great collaboration production pal. The ‘e-save’ button made me smile, all I could think of was Yorkshire Tea, which is my fave before anyone says. This car is impressive on track.
Hi Ped Great to see Stef back with you, obviously having a lot of fun. Do not think however you needed much encouragement. Can appreciate your love of the Alfa brand which I share, having had one many years ago, when heart overuled head, but that is another story. One question how would this fair against a Macan🤔
Hello Peter..and Stef!! Well a good car in that version then and going by the brakes, you were trying hard…it didn’t seem to look like that though so maybe that shows it is stable and capable. However given the U.K. network, I’m not sure I would ever be brave enough to buy one…Alfa tries so hard but struggles in this Country. I’m glad you enjoyed it though!!😀😀😀😀
Plus TV work is unreliable even though it pays well. But u r great presenter should have started earlier. People want video s that reflect difficult financial times. Not u d
Hi @petrolHead any idea what was the fuel economy on this thing? Is it worse than MHEV version or better or the same? The claimed 600km range together with fully charged battery is quite short, but I assume it has a smaller fuel tank as well. Don't mind stopping at the gas station more often due to smaller tank, but I hope it also doesn't drink a lot bc it carries batteries etc.
EV... NO..... PHEV.... I could probably live with something like this... Looked like fun.. But was it the extra weight that caused the hot breaks or just a heavy foot!! Now if I say you are Funny all the time will you take me with you next time??? :-))
@Petrol Ped when you're reviewing a terrific car in Italy, you get to pronounce it whichever way you like (except for, probably, toe-nail 😆 ) keep up the great work, mate
this has to be up there as one of your best videos, so glad to see you having fun hooning it around a track, though the driver in front didnt drive quick enough by the looks of things!! the car looks great and love the ide of 50 miles of EV range, that should be the mininum a PHEV should offering, 30-35 max is just not really enough, at least with a 50 mile max you should get at a guess 30-35 even in colder weather. the fact you can charge the battery whilst driving on ICE mode is great as could use the PHEV battery at your destination. i drive approx 120 miles to work, but then only do just 5-6 miles a day commuting, so i could easily use the EV part could do the whole of my 4 or 5 days on shift, which is a maximum of 30 miles. Not to mention 370 miles roughly wouldnt quite get me to scotland from devon, but i usually stop in stoke and carlisle anyway, where i could stop to fill up and maybe partially charge the battery whilst having a break. what sort of charging time is the battery say even to 80%?
Alfa still has electrical issues with their batteries, would not be comfortable with one of these, too many things to go wrong and time of the road. I think it looks amazing but not worth the risk when buying with your head and not heart.
When Stef said they were doing 177 (kph) on track I was surprised - it didn't look fast. But it's a tall (ish) car so maybe the speed is deceptive. Those braking hazard lights would do my head in - I guess you can't turn them off. Great review though - well done Pete.
The press pack and talking to the Global Product Manager. It is 80km...the Alfa website states 50 miles city cycle or 42 miles combined cycle...I've just checked !
@Petrol Ped that's very strange I checked canada, usa sites and all state that the 50km range with the same 15.5 kwh battery. Anyways ..fun times for you guys. I wish we had 80km range .
I had one of these on loan while my Stelvio was in for a service. It looks good but drives terribly compared to the Stelvio. I couldn't wait to give it back!
Plus no AWD in EV mode. Anyone hoping to make use of the AWD may be very disappointed. Still a great motor with some quirks..just ordered the Ti 160hp hybrid.
I noticed on longer trips when the battery runs out it's still mighty fast though it does rev a little more eagerly. It always keeps for about 3 to 4 km of charge in the battery to guarantee availability of AWD (so it seems to have a hybrid mode that is independent of the ICE+EV hybrid mode with battery charge). The moment you go off the accelerator it does fairly strong regen 'braking' and looking at the Energy Flow tab in the e-Hybrid screen (of the Infotainment system) it seems to send some power to the battery in D mode even when applying accelerator(*). So, unless you keep accelerating for a very long time (or would maintain constant energy if it were possible---so also slowing down going uphill f.i.---) there is always some juice left in the battery for eAWD acceleration. Obviously that energy has to come from somewhere, and if it's not from gravity (like rolling downhill), it has to come from higher fuel consumption. (Recuperating kinetic energy for battery charge through regen braking instead of coasting obviously means you need to go sooner on the accelerator to maintain speed and so this also impacts fuel consumption.) Yet below 100 km/h fuel economy is reasonable, even with spirited driving (compared to my previous car at less than half the power with pure petrol ICE; if you want numbers I need to start noting them down once it gains a bit of age). (*) There is apparently a 20 kW or so generator attached to the ICE. Some documentation suggests it's a starter motor (but why? compactness?), other documentation suggests it's a generator to maintain minimum battery charge. However, on the charge gauge it is a ghost charge because if the battery is flat it says 0 km on the instrument cluster and 0 km in the My Alfa Connect app. The above observations mostly apply to D mode when not indicated.
@@michel7796 Let's see now. Dodge has more dealers, promotion (advertising), and brand recognition here is the US, plus the Hornet will likely cost less to buy. The Stellantis decision to share (or steal) from Alfa will make the Tonale a nonstarter in the US.
I loved this car since it was a prototype. Interestingly Stellantis was form soon after the prototype came out. From the video it looks promising. I'm sure it will be a comercial success.
Stylish but is it reliable??? Alpha have not been known for reliability here in Aus. PHEV seems the way to go unless you are only having a city car and don't plan to take that car on long distance trips to rural and regional areas in the outback. Another great review Pedro.
It's more than an urban myth than a fact. I have been driving Alfas for a while, no issues whatsoever with my Stelvio Q4 and Giulietta Cloverleaf or previous models I had.
