Becky and Kon take to the streets of London to test out Nikon's compact pancake (not pancake) prime lenses, the 28mm f/2.8 and the 40mm f/2.
There may or may not have also been a pigeon attack involved.
Check our our website and e-shop: www.graysofwestminster.co.uk/
Both cameras used were Z 6 bodies and all shots were taken in RAW.

I have the 40 f2 and I love it. My z5 came with 24-70f4 and I can tell the 40mm is a huge bonus because of the f2 and small. I love these lenses.

Noticeable differences when taking , but hardly any real differences , when in the hands of true professionals like you two , in the viewing !!! A session full of stunning pics , which we all adored . Love all of your London walk shoots . Especially grateful we are , that you braved the freezing November day . Thank you both .

Both of these take the system in another direction. For the size and weight they increase versatility. I took them both on a recent trip and found they added several options.

I've got the 28 mm and 50mm MC for my Z50 and sold the 16-50 zoom. A great combo I think, and they both work on full frame which is another big benefit the day I buy a Z6ii which is on my wishlist. I also got the 50-250 DX zoom which is also excellent and a bunch of F lenses for my D4 or adapted to the Z50. Very good to be able to use old glass seamlessly!

I have both the 28 and 40mm, as well as the 35mm and 50 1.2. It might seem like a slightly cluttered group of focal lengths, but actually in practice it isn’t, because I would bring the 40mm in situations when the 50 is too much to carry, and the same goes for the 28 for the 35 to a lesser extent. One other neat trick! The 28 and 40 both have 52mm front threads, which means the Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter fits on the front without needing step up rings. If you use the Viltrox Z extension tubes and the ES-1, you can get 1:1 or 1:1.5 magnification and digitize slides with autofocus on either FX or DX (40mm for FX, 28mm for DX). You can also digitize negatives with the ES-1 by making your own negative carrier out of paperboard or whatever you have to hand. I thought I might as well since I already had the ES-1 and the negative copying was the only functionality I missed from the ES-2.

Looking into scanning with the 40mm combo with Viltrox extension tubes. Which tubes did you use and would you still recommend? Don’t feel like getting a MC50 macro just for scanning 35mm 😅

I have both. Super light, fun lenses. I have found I really like the 40mm focal lenth. I have always enjoyed the 35mm….probably why. In my personal world, my Z7II has a grip, and I use it with larger Z zooms, for landscapes, mostly on tripods. But in the city, its my Z6 and going light.

I had a craving today to see Becky & Kon so I watched several of their review videos, including this one. I've had both of these lenses since they were first available. I've used them on Z 6II, Z7 II, and now on my Z f and Z 8 cameras. I am always pleased with the images I get with them!

Thank you for your guidance. I appreciate you both for your shared knowledge. The Z 28mm on my Z 50, along with the Z 24-70 F4 S. Then the Nikon 1 NIKKOR 6.7-13mm f/3.5-5.6 VR Lens (Silver) for my V1. The one prime 28mm is all I need, as the 24-70 F4 S is as good as a prime. The V1 setup is economical and more than adequate when I need a wider lens.

I just got into Nikon this yr, with my new Zf, which completely grabbed my heart soul and money, after shooting Sony for almost 4 yrs now, mainly street. It did come with the Nikkor 40mm F/2 kit lens and then I got the 28mm ai-s vintage lens also @ f/2 in superb mint condition from Japan for my manual focus itch...! LOL. Iv'e heard and read that these might be the best creative lenses for a more modern appeal and take on the traditional (more boring) 35/50mm prime lens kit duet. I also paired the 28/40mm with the newest Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.8. for a better rounded 3 prime lens kit. Maybe ai-s 135mm or go wider -16mm next in the not so distant future. Or maybe the 14-24mm f/2.8 as a first zoom... Great to find dedicated Nikon content from passionate like-minded folks like myself!!! CHEERS!!!

I just bought the 28mm. Love it so far. Funny the EDC solution for me was a lens. I use it on my Z6ii. When I want a tighter view I just dx my camera. If I had the 40mm and wanted a wider view. I’d just pan and stitch in Lightroom. Great vid as usual.

I bought the 40mm on black Friday last year. I'm really impressed with that lens. It is a very sharp lens with lots of detail. It's almost like a macro lens up close. I bought it mainly for street but it can be used for portraits and landscape. I find it to be a good compromise between the 35mm and 50mm. If the 40mm is this good I can only imagine how good the 50mm f/1.8 is. The 85mm f/1.8 is next on my list though.

I am a prime guy. I already got the 28mm SE and I'm looking forward to get the 40mm soon. Perfect for using on my compact Z fc/Z50. They would also work nicely on any full frame Z body. Perfect for carry around and shoot. I was out shooting yesterday with a 17mm and a 50mm on my Z fc and the 17mm was a bit too wide for what I was trying to do and the 50mm was a bit too narrow. So I'm guessing if I pack the 28mm and the 40mm, they would fit my use case perfectly.

On dx 28mm = 42mm and 40mm = 60mm. Soo 28mm on dx is not so wide. 40mm on dx for me is abit to zoomed. But on fx they are great lenses. On 28mm i really love that u can get really close to subject.. its the same on 28-75mm F2.8 ,ou can get really close.

I have a z50 and its my main camera along with my Fuji Xpro3. My Xpro3 is my everyday carry with an 18mm| 1.4 and a 27mm |2. I do however adapt my Voitgtlanders full frame from my DSLR the 58mm| 1.4 and the 40mm| 2. I LOVE THE LOOK of the Voigtlanders and FUji Lenses. I don't like adapting my older voits on the z 50. When I do get the full frame z body they will still need to be adapted.. Now that Voigtlander has Z Glass I will purchase. Maybe the 23mm and the 50mm. We will see.

Don;t know if it is just me, but the 28mm photos almost all seem better than the 40mm renditions of the same subjects. You’ve got me seriously considering that 28mm f2.8 - 28mm on my Z6 and 42mm (equivalent) on my Z50. Two lenses for the price of one. Hmmm.

Bonne continuation. olivier_svoboda from Marseille 😊

Well these 2 lenses are not bad but they look very poor even the SE versions. I don t understand why Nikon at least on the SE version didn’t build them in metal, put a metal bâtonnet and didn t add a diaph ring. This should have made a beautiful combo. And it was possible : Viltrox did it with its 35mm f 1.8. So on my side I resold the 2 SE plastic version and bought the Viltrox 35mm.
