29. PCT - Snoqualmie Pass to Stevens Pass

Coming out of Snoqualmie Pass, visibility was definitely hindered by smoke from fires in California and Oregon. Eventually, it cleared and the beautiful views of the North Cascades came into view. With only 259.5 miles to the Canadian border, this video focuses on the ruggedness of the Washington section of the PCT.

Rev ! You’ll need to come back North n do that Alpine Lakes Wilderness area (Snoqualmie to Steven Pass) again ! I’ve spent weeks hiking this area n worked with the F.S. for ten yrs in that region. Sorry the offshore smoke 💨 the Westerlies caught from California n messed up your view n journey ! I’ve hiked up in those remote areas since the 1950’s wen I was a pre-teen n our family camped at Salmon la Sac n Cle Elum Valley ... cheers 🥂 Papa J.

Hi Rev, another fine video of yours & love your since of humor you've been having lately. I guess you were feeling giddy about getting so close to finishing the journey. My wife & I were on a 5 month trip to the Northwestern states pulling a travel trailer & watched as the same smoke rolled in while camping on Camano Island SP in the San Juan islands. It took us over a week heading back east towards Ga. to find clean air just outside of Cheyenne, WY. You truly do have natural voice & are an excellent presenter, I guess years of practice makes perfect!!
@TheHikingRev
@TheHikingRev 2 года назад
Thanks. It’s going to be harder and harder to hike the pacific crest trail in the future because of the dangers of wildfires. Thinning the forest and a lot of rain in the winter is the only thing that is going to help.
@travelerdirk7923
@travelerdirk7923 2 года назад
I'm thinking the same thing, if it works our. I'll probably do the trail in 2 parts over 2 yesrs, California & then Oregon & WA. That way I can miss the late summer wildfires. Thanks again & keep those videos coming, there very helpful in planning.

Nicole...I started the Trail alone but you are always meeting people, hiking with them, camping with them, seeing them in Trail Towns. If you start with a partner you’re pretty well stuck with them but if you start alone you can pick and choose who you want to be in your Tramly (Trail Family).

Do you think doing the J section first week in October 2023 is reasonable weather/smoke wise baed on prior years (yes, I know nothing is for sure), just trying to get a best guess.

You are very discerning. A little bit of all of the above. Frustrated over the smoke, excited about finishing, enjoying the beauty of Washington, struggling with everything the Trail was throwing at me. The last part of the Trail was VERY challenging which you’ll see in the next video.

@@TheHikingRev Thanks. Another thing I have picked up that you may be able to help me to straighten out - when I have had the serious pleasure to watch, and enjoy your videos, I struggle to understand what happened at Kearsarge Pass. The espidoes up till then seems posted a year ago. After that it is this year. Did you take a year off?
@TheHikingRev
@TheHikingRev 3 года назад
@@michaelthunfors2438 I started the PCT on April 15, 2019 and had to get off Trail first part of June because of a shoulder injury I suffered on Kearsarge Pass. I resumed my hike on June 1, this year, at the same place I got off last year, Onion Valley Trailhead/Kearsarge Pass. My phone/camera broke and I was not able to film anything from Sawmill Pass to Echo Lake. I went into South Lake Tahoe to get another phone/camera. Next year I’m going to do the section from Sawmill Pass to Echo Lake again so I can publish the videos on RU-vid.

Never trust the teller. Trust the tale. --D. H. Lawrence 7:27. You would think that corporate backpacking equipment manufacturers would be obsessed about making products that meet the very high survival standards of PCT-CDT hikers, standards that PCT-CDT hikers could bet the safety of their lives on. You would think that they would test out their equipment under PCT-CDT conditions before they would put their product on sale to those of us who endure the high risks and wear and tear of trekking through the wilderness. For the safety of you, me and all of us, what is the brand name of these products that fail when we dearly depend our lives on them? Never trust the teller. Trust the tale. --D. H. Lawrence

Zpacks did honor their warranty policy. I sent the tent to them and they replaced the defective zipper. BTW…this was not a safety issue. At no time was I at risk of life or limb because of the zipper failure. At the end of my Thruhike my tent became a tarp, that’s all. 😁
