The BEST way to lose your FERRIS ISX 3300 Mower? Let your neighbour ride it!
Out and about on the FERRIS ISX 3300 Zero Turn mower today to get some more practice operating the machine. Heading over to mow Guy's two main fields. The grass is long overdue for a cut. I got a little surprise part way through mowing the west field. LOL. Apparently, my neighbour just discovered a new toy. Hope you will join me up here at the cottage, in the outdoors. Cheers!

GP, I bought a Ferris 61" Z3X stand behind zero turn last Friday, and used it for the first time Sunday. Wow, I managed to finish in two hours what usually takes me 4 days to mow with my walk behind field and brush mowers! And it is fun to use.

@@GPOutdoors One of the nice things about my local Farris dealer (50 miles away), is that he offered (and I accepted) to have him bring the machine out to my farm so that I could see it in action on my own property. Seeing how well the machine could handle the conditions on my farm is what sold me on the machine. Making the offer to bring it out, sold me on the dealership.

Hey there GP, fun video! I remember those days back when I was put on the trimmer for hours and hours and hours before ever being able to operate the zero turn, lol! Then finally the time came when I was the guy on the zero turn all day long mowing acres upon acres. In fact it actually got to the point where I was mowing around the lake at some condos in every week I would fall asleep at the same place 😂, almost put the mower and myself in the lake many a times! 😩. So yeah I see my comment on here regarding ditches and how to mow them. I don’t typically give my opinion on social media but this might be of worth. Years ago when I was cocommercial mowingnd And was taught, I later picked up on some things and figured out a way I like to cut. So what I would always do is two complete circles around the property with the shoot facing in and would overlap the second round so that it would be striped. If there was any ditches or gullies , I would stop at those first and mow parallel with the ditch starting at the bottom working my way up with the shoot pointed up the whole time this way it won’t scalp. Then I would finish my circle around it and the two passes around the entire property. Any trees that I would come to ,split them in half versus doing for all circles around them. This saves on that inner wheel pulling up the sod. Far as the stripes go. I would always pick the widest point of the property that I was Cutting and line up with something across the property and shoot straight across for it. If that first stripe ends up a little crooked you could always straighten it out with the next one. The bright stripes are always going away from you. And if you really want to get the stripes to brighten up when you’re all done, raise the deck up a couple notches and run back over each stripe in the same direction lining your tires up. Anyway I know you get a lot of comments and have probably already seen this procedure on other videos but just thought I’d throw it out there! I do miss commercial mowing it was always a blast but a ton of hot work! And then when the Z turns were out of service for repair I would have to run all day on foot behind a 48 inch walk behind! It was crazy exercise! Be blessed GP!!! 😉

Not sure if this will find you, but I bought a new Ferris ISX 3300 two years ago. About six months ago, out of nowhere, the spindle bolts holding the blades in place started to shear off. I've always cut at the same depth, 3.5 inched, and haven't hit anything in significance that would shear a bolt. I've lost 4 in total, one just yesterday. I had the mower in the shop last week because I couldn't remove a sheered bolt. Although all the blades had less than 10 hours, I had them replace them all. They couldn't remove the sheered bolt, so they had to install a new spindle. That, As you can imagine, I was pretty upset after losing another bolt when I called the dealer they're insisting I'm hitting something. It's just not true. I'm leaning towards an issue with the deck. I've never lost the middle bolt/blade. The mower has 53.4 hours on the PTO, and 67.8 on the engine. Do you have any thoughts on why this continues to happen?

Nice video! Ferris is an excellent top notch ZTR. My question is (since you are a Kubota man) did you consider the F series (F2690) front mount mower which has a 25hp Kubota diesel in 60" or 72"? The Kubota F series has been around for many years, especially used for commercial applications like schools and municipalities. I have a friend who has a very old one with a ton of hours on it, never had an issue with it. Also good for people who don't care for (or necessarily need) a ZTR. Take a look and tell us what you think! Keep up the great work, I enjoy your channel.

Hey Gord, it's been a while as we've been busy here in Ireland trying not to get Covid 19 😎 what a beautiful piece of machinery. I've got a Kubota ZD326s but it's not quite as sexy as that Ferris. You are so lucky that side discharging works so well for you in Canada during summer. Your light wispy meadow grass just flies out of the side chute about 3 meters in places - I was actually worried for Guy's GSD there at one point. Our grass here in Ireland is simply too green, dense and lush for anything other than mulching (which is ultimately feeding this grass of ours) and collecting - I know you've other challenges that we don't here but.... collecting grass is a real pain.

Here, in the summer, I can go weeks sometimes without having to cut it. Thanks again - take good care John!

All he would need would be some T posts, a little wire and some sharp butcher knives for late fall when the grass goes dormant. LOL. Guy ain't no dummy...he saw an opportunity and he straddled it and took off to see for himself !! Down this way the big lawn care companies advertise for guys that are proficient at cross hatching with zero turns or sulky mowers. Its definitely a skill that requires hours of practice.

As well as practicing your striping you need to practice minimum overlap. Watching the Drone view I see the same problem I've seen for 20 years with people on a zero-turn is they overlap way too much they're for wasting a lot of mowing ability of the machine. 2" overlap will provide a clean cut and maximum production

@DnMcDy

Just lipping off with no expertise. I often wondered if a guy could mow in a pattern like the Ice Rink conditioner machines use. You circle once around the edge and then cut the mowing area in half. Then you swipe the edge of each half on each pass. This way you never have a tight turn, never stop, and never back up. Also eliminates the pivot divot. Just curious.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 года назад
Good afternoon Den! That sounds lie a pretty good idea. I think it may work well but I think I would have to make sure I am hitting each adjacent pass in the opposite direction of the one beside it to make it look stirred, I think. But I like it. Another person suggested a similar idea - do around all the obstacles and do a border, like you have suggested, and then it would leave the main area for mowing in straight lines. Thanks for the idea! I may give it a try! Have a great week!
@DnMcDy
@DnMcDy 4 года назад
@@GPOutdoors Aah! Artistic mowing. LOL I suppose when you spiral your way across the field you could not mow the edge but skip a strip each time and then at the end of spiraling one direction, you could reverse your spiral to mow the strips you left spiraling back the other direction. This would keep the large turning radius. Another advantage is speed. You have a fast mower and this prevents the big slow down at the end of each pass. Yes, you do mow areas more than once transitioning but sometimes some areas need that second pass. I don't mow artistic, I have to push the mower, so screw art, even with my college minor in commercial art. LOL

Believe me, you don't normally use a string trimmer in the middle of a open flat field.

Good day Ronald. You certainly do when the terrain is too rough to take a mower through it. Thanks for tuning in!

Hello Gord, when cutting thick tall grass, only use 2/3 of the width of your deck and also travel slower. This will allow the blades to clear, and cut better. Also loop all your obstacles and cut your parameter first, then work your infield. If you still have a lot of clipping forming “ corn rows” , raise deck 1/4 inch and re-mow. St keep from tearing up the grass, slow down before your turn, and be easy on the controls coming to each stop point. As you said it will take some time, but you will get there. Also find an area you don’t mind tearing up some, water it down to make it slick! Then get the feel of the mower in a slide condition. I’m not telling you to be abusive with the mower, but just like driving a car on ice, you should know how it will act so you can react!

Good morning and thanks Pat! Some super helpful advice. I was not sure if I should be cutting around obstacles as I get to them but I will give that a try - getting around the trees and obstacles first, next time. Have a great week and thanks again!

GP Outdoors it should speed things up a bit! Also do your string trimming first! This way you can gave a nice finish ride! Remember you should cut only 1/3 the night of the grass so if your grass is 4 inches tall, only take about 1 1/4 inch cut!

Good morning John! Sorry to hear that but of course, it's always great to be able to get a new tool! I have a STIHL MS251C, with an 18" bar. Love the saw. Starts every time and cuts well - summer and winter. Lightweight. I also bought a STIHL 2 in 1 sharpener - a must have in my mind. I sharpen every morning before heading out. A couple of things to think about, if I may offer. If you have trees similar to me - on average usually no more than about 12" in diameter ( mostly) - then I think this saw is a good size. If your forest tends to have more bigger diameter trees, then I think you will need a bigger more powerful saw. I am not too familiar yet with those although I have been looking. If you have a little more to spend, the MS261C is the exact same saw, same weight but offers a considerable more power. I didn't buy it because at the time, the difference in price was several hundred dollars but that may have changed. My neighbour has a 271 ( 20" bar) and loves it too - bigger, a little heavier and more power, and was on sale last month at the STIHL dealers. I hope that helps a little. Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

Good day Bill! Garage is a long way off i'm afraid but I'll be working on the wood shed later in the summer. Looks like I'll be out in the cold again this winter. :)) Cheers!

@@GPOutdoors Thanks for the reply. I built my wood shop 10 years before I retired. I don't have the energy now. I love working in it in the winter with the wood stove keeping me warm. I have 4 acres that keeps me busy maintaining it in the summer. I see you in your open shed with all the snow and cold and hope you can enjoy a warm shop ASAP. CHEERS.

Mowing on flat ground is one thing,..but,....How about mowing across a slope Gord,...how do you manage that with a Zero Turn Ferris Mower,...:) or any zero turn ? While you're in an 'educating mode',..it should soon be time to sharpen those blades,..show me/us how that is done please.

Hey good evening Reg! Sorry for the delay - busy days lately. Looking to find a property with a slope so I can try it out. The manual says it is good to 15 degrees. And I may be able to do a maintenance video on it possibly - the first oil change is not due for 500 hours. Yup, that's right - 500. That's a lot of mowing. LOL. I hope you are doing well and had an enjoyable weekend! Take good care!

@@GPOutdoors Wow, 500 hours for an oil change on that small(ish) engine,....must be synthetic oil and a good filter system.

Fellow RU-vidr question. What’s the purpose and benefit of numbering videos? Happy to chat offline if you like. Thx. -Ed
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 года назад
Good day Ed! It's for your subscribers and for later referencing folks back to previous videos. Quite often someone will ask you a question that you may have done on a previous video and you can easily tell them the number to watch. Also, many folks like to know they have not missed a video, so they can tell by the numbering. Hope that helps, Ed. Take care!
@MyClutteredGarage
@MyClutteredGarage 4 года назад
GP Outdoors thanks very much! That makes sense. I started numbering mine because I see it done often on other channels. It’s not a problem to refer people to my to content with fewer than 20 videos, but I can see this being useful in the future. Especially if I have multiple videos on the same topic. Thanks GP! -Ed
