Thank you for sharing this important history! And thank you for your service! My Dad was C. Company 1/502nd in 1968. Sgt Richard Rohsner. I’ve recently been doing a lot of research on the 101st in Vietnam and this video sheds a lot of light on the operations that went down with the 101st during that turbulent and tragic year.

I was there , that was my Company Command in the blue shirt, I was a Delta Raider. LZ Sally was our base camp. At 17 minutes into the film is described a battle I was in serving with 1st platoon. As I looked back over my shoulder I saw Sgt. Hooper motion me forward out into the clearing. After taking only a couple of steps, I was cut down by an NVA soldier to my left, two friends engaged and killed him while I crawled back to the creek with a gun shot wound to my left thigh.30 days later, I was right back with 1st Platoon fighting in the Jungle :-(

A friend from high school was in CO B 2nd Batt 501 Inf 101 ABN. He was drafted and joined the Army on 11 September 1967. His tour started on 10 March 1968. He was KIA April 10, 1968 in Thua Thien Province South Vietnam, between Khe Sanh and Hue city. He died outright from multiple fragmentation wounds. I said goodbye to him at his open casket funeral. Whenever I'm back home I visit him where he's laid to rest. I joined the Marines a year later and served for 3 years, one year in Vietnam with 7th and 1st Marines.

Thank you Gen. Cushman for this incredible history of our unit in Nam! I think of that time every day and have since coming home in 1969. Thank you for sharing what we did both for us to remember and to commemorate those who did not come home. We did not fight in vain! You did a superb job leading us and continue to now with this video! Thank you again! Sp4 Bob Mason C 2/501 1968-69

Thank you for sharing this. An extra thank you for making this when you did, as so many of these places have changed so much since that it's often impossible to envision what these places looked like back then given all the build up since. Even though this was nearly 30 years later compared to now it looks so much more like these areas did then than it does today. Other than the few places preserved for the tourism trade most places are just unrecognizable today.

Thanks for an explanation of the big picture. I was just a 11B2P and I just knew what was going on as far as I could see. Couple of details I remember a little differently though. D/1/502, 67-68

I was stationed at Eielson AFB, AK from 9/66 to 12/68. I worked in ground support equipment shop and we maintained the aircraft ground heaters, among other types of equipment. In Dec. 67, we were notified that C-141s were being diverted from Elmendorf AFB to Eielson. They were carrying elements of the 101st A.D. to S. Vietnam under Operation Eagle Thrust.

THANK YOU, GENERAL!!! I served with the 2nd Brigade out of LZ Sally 8/68 - 8/69, and the 3rd Brigade out of Camp Evans 9/69 - 3/70. I had so many questions about the area, and why the 1st Cav has Camp Evan, within our AO during my first tour, and why upon return the Cav was gone, and the 3rd Brigade was there... And it was great seeing what that AO looks like today! God Bless all of my Vietnam Brothers, Living and Dead!

Why do you think the USA lost/was unable to win?
@gordonlandreth9550
@gordonlandreth9550 2 года назад
A very good question , and it is not an easy answer . From everything that I have read , just at about the time that the NVA was running out of men and supplies , after Cambodia in 70 and 71 , we started to pull out of the war and hand it over to the South . When that started to happen the commanders in the North said " take it easy on the combat operations , go to ground " . They waited 4 more years after the U S had left , and then just beat the South in a conventional fight .

my Dad was Frank/Friedjof Roesner. Anyone know him? He also came from Fort Campbell Kentucky. I was a baby and have photos just before he was deployed in 1966 or 1967. Just fact checking on him. He was not who I thought he was so if you knew him let me know? Hint///He was a GERMAN AMERICAN born in 1948 and he said he worked as a supply clerk but more realistic he provided party favors to the guys. RING A BELL? He took lots of photos, art photos too. I may have photos of YOU in Vietnam. Connect with me?
