2K18 (EP 19) US-395 in Lassen County: California's Outback 

Love the scenery along us highway 395

California's Outback is a really good nickname for it. And jut over 100 miles later on 395, starts Oregon's Outback Scenic Byway once you get past New Pine Creek which is half in California and half in Oregon. I'm a native Washingtonian, and after choosing to use I-5 going south thru Oregon and Northern California, traveling back north on 395 clear from Mono County, CA to the 395/Oregon S.R. 31 and continuing on Oregon's outback scenic byway to U.S. 97 and to Bend, OR immediately after that has been one of the top 2 most awesome day drives I've been on in my whole life. And it has no likelihood of getting beat out for that position. I rode it in Aug. '88 when I was 16, from Mammoth Lakes to Bend and routes 395, 31, and 97. And at 6:00p.m., arriving in Bend, my dad still wasn't tired and said we'll go home tonight. Then we drove another 6 hours home to the Seattle area arriving home a little after midnight, only using routes 20 from Bend to Salem and I-5 and WA S.R. 16 & 3 to get home to Seabeck, a rural community outside of Bremerton, across the sound form Seattle. 24 years later in 2012, I did the same exact drive and Labor Day, with the only difference of Bridgeport as the starting point as opposed to Mammoth Lakes. And now I'm wondering if the Outback sceneries on U.S. 395 had also had something to do with my Dad still not being tired after that 11 hour and 550 mile drive, like the open land drives of 395 just managed to pass time quicker than normal.

i bet this area looked like this 60 years ago.

I recognize that 2nd song as the opening theme from "Mountain Men". wow, 100 miles between gas stations. Even in the remote parts of Alberta or BC's National Parks I don't think the stations are that far apart. 😳
