Thank you so much for this video. The last time I was there was in 1960 (I was 6) when my father was stationed at White Sands Mussel Range. It's pretty much as I remember it... except, it was a lot less crowded then.

I was there in 1965 with my family. I was 13. My uncle was stationed there also, and we were visiting them and my cousins. Yes, there were very few people there at the time. I went back in 1975 with my then girlfriend. Really liked it.

If only time travel could happen. I'd head straight to March, 1982 to watch the shuttle Columbia land at White Sands, sonic booms and all!

They actually let the general public all the way onto the grounds of the Northrop Strip on WSMR...you would have been pretty far from the action at the National Monument (which is what this was back then). I understand NASA set up a PA system with real time audio being broadcast to the crowd!

Thanks for the tour of the the National Park. Personally, why anyone wants to camp overnight there with all that sand about is beyond me. & for now, we say goodbye to the "Land of Enchantment" & go to the "Lone star State" & it's massive highway system.

Thanks for the tour! Even one night of camping would give you a clear view of the night sky. Btw, STS-3 (Columbia's third mission) landed at White Sands Space Harbor NW of the park. Up until her final mission on STS-107, maintenance crews kept finding gypsum sand in her nooks and crannies. They never did get it all out. Looking forward to Texas!

Cool, thanks for the comment. Texas coming to a screen near you Friday 12:00 AM PDT.

When it was a National Monument, during the summer it would be open to overnight camping on full moon nights. I saw my first satellites there, and tons of shooting stars, and the Milky Way (it's pretty far from any light pollution sources).

Are the NM dunes much more different than the Colorado dunes? The ones in colorado seem much taller.

The Colorado dunes are higher. We will see those later in the season.

About 25 miles to the south.

It's the gypsum in the sand.

As I recall, "White Sands" was also once a nuclear bomb test site. I imagine that the radiation has gone down to more acceptable levels.
