Been through that tunnel numerous times. That was quite the tunnel engineering project.

I have fond memories of driving in this part of Seattle. My best memory is the time my mom and I took one of our many road trips through Western Washington, and on this particular trip we drove over the Aurora Street Bridge and the old Alaskan Way Viaduct. Sadly, she passed away 10 years ago. It was nice going on this trip through the new tunnel.

After living in Everett for a while several years ago, the most amazing thing about this video is that it's sunny with not a cloud in the sky! 😅

I drove this in 2016 when the viaduct was still there, I will drive it again in a couple of months when I fly out to Seattle again.

Former US 99. Love to see that the former US route still exists as state highways.

I really wish the three pacific states never got rid of the route and kept it as a US Route whether signed by itself or co-signed with its successors.

Older gran turismo games really show their age now. There’s a Seattle course and it takes you under the Alaskan ways

The battery street tunnel was closed and demolished due to its age making it too expensive to maintain. Original plans called for the tunnel to be incorporated into the new tunnel project but this was canceled when the tunnel project was canceled the first time

So you can bypass the downtown area by going through a tunnel. How cool is that?! In Pittsburgh, you go through a tunnel (and cross a bridge) to get to the downtown area.

I used to live in a high-rise apartment building just 1 block east of the Alaska Way Viaduct, in an apartment w/west facing views of the waterfront and ferry terminals. The viaduct was not only an eyesore, it was very noisy and very, very dangerous. After the 2001 earthquake (I lived in that apartment at the time of the earthquake, but was at work in Issaquah when it happened), there was extensive damage to many of the older un-reinforced brick buildings thru-out the greater Seattle area and the viaduct was heavily damaged as well. The viaduct was built by the same contracting firm that built the multi-story viaduct approach to the Bay Bridge from downtown San Fransisco that collapsed and killed a lot of people during the World Series earthquake there back when. That the Seattle viaduct didn't collapse was nothing short of a minor miracle. As it was, it remained closed for many, many months after the earthquake just so it could be patched back together enough to make it safe, although everyone understood it would not likely withstand another earthquake of any magnitude. There were 2 choices from which to choose for a permanent and safe solution: tear the viaduct down and rebuild it in place or tear it down and replace it with a tunnel, thus opening up the waterfront to the downtown area. Either way, the existing viaduct would have to come down. The City of Seattle allowed it's citizens to vote on which option they preferred and the tunnel option won by a very narrow option. As a voting resident of the city, I chose the tunnel. I accessed the waterfront amenities on a nearly daily basis during the years I lived there and I would much rather walk over an invisible highway than under a highly exposed one that could possibly collapse on me, should I be so unlucky as to be under it when the next earthquake hit. Another aspect of replacing the viaduct with a tunnel that many folks don't know about is that the Seattle waterfront is created because the city built a seawall along the shoreline over 100 years ago. This original seawall was eroding and rotting at the time of the 2001 earthquake and the debate concerning how to repair/replace it had already been underway for at least a decade. So really, the options were not just as outlined above, but also, in rebuilding the viaduct in place, included a separate project of rebuilding the seawall. The tunnel option combined the two projects in that the western/bayside wall of the tunnel, if built, became the new seawall. So while the tunnel was the more expensive solution and would require more time to complete, in the end it, by combining the seawall and the tunnel into one HUGE project, it was the least expensive option and had the benefit of creating both open vistas of the water from downtown as well as providing great pedestrian access from anywhere downtown to the waterfront. To me, as a downtown Seattle resident, it was a no-brainer decision...the tunnel. Lastly, Seattle (and it's residents) justly takes pride in it's stunning beauty. From the water looking east, it has one of the most amazing skylines of any city on the planet. The city takes pride also in being extremely pedestrian friendly, and as I did not own a vehicle for the entire 20 years I lived there, I can attest to that. The viaduct was an eyesore. And while I no longer live in Seattle, or even Washington State, I'm so very glad the viaduct is gone and that the city has wisely invested in enhancing it's beauty.

Yeah its amazing how much quieter the waterfront is without the Viaduct there. I do miss all the construction though. It scared all the cars away from Alaskan Way and I was able to just zip through downtown on my commute. Now that its basically all done my commute time has increased by 15 minutes.

Interesting. I always hear about bad traffic in Seattle and thought it would be three lanes each way.

Seattle’s traffic is honestly not worse than any other major city from my experiences.

@@InterstateKyleI remember the old viaduct when I played the gran Turismo video game on the Seattle street circuit. However, the tunnel is beautiful plus with the viaduct gone it offer a nice view of the riverfront.

It might have been an eyesore, but it had better views. The only ones who really wanted this tunnel were the politicians and the condo owners who were suddenly going to get million dollar views. And it really hasn't helped traffic... which is horrific.
