Looking for a good quality, high current 120V Autotransformer (Variac) at a very reasonable price? Look no further, in this video I'll show you the unit, demonstrate how this extremely useful equipment works, perform a partial teardown, and show 2 or 3 extremely minor modifications that I made. I wasn't expecting total perfection due to the low cost, but it did surpass my expectations. You won't find this unit being sold anywhere close to this price, so I have a feeling the deal may not last. Enjoy the video!

I have a pure sine wave inverter that's putting out about 110V and I have an electronic pilot ignition on my gas water heater that demands exactly 120V. I'm trying to find power line conditioner will boost to a steady 120V . Will this AC Variable Automatic Voltage Regulator Converter do the job of stabilizing the output voltage to 120V?

I bought one of these or at least very similar and added a digital volt/amp/watt/energy display for better accuracy. While doing so I discovered that one power outlet was wired wrong, having the neutral and hot leads reversed. I urge everyone buying these to check them to make sure things are wired properly.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review! I bought one today on eBay for $67.99 with free shipping from California. I am going to use it to control a Poppery II popcorn popper used to roast green coffee. This allows one to control the power, thus temperature. I am going to plug in a "kill-a-watt meter" into the variac, and the popper into the meter. That way I can monitor the wattage and change the temperature at different points during the roast. When I receive the variac I will open it up and check all the connections, and like you mentioned, possibly resolder some.

Thank you for the info & demo on this. I was wanting one of these for repairing old tube radios and other electronic equipment, in which this is a necessary to bring the voltage up gracefully. The reason why I haven't gotten one was the price, several hundred dollars usually and most are not rated as high as this one 2000 Watts (VA). For accuracy, it's always good to have a DMM showing the voltage. The one that you are using is a decent meter, it reads AC voltage in RMS. I'm ordering one now, and thanks for the coupon code. Saved me another $3.27!

I have one of these between my wall outlet and my drill press, it’s great for precise rpm on the drill press and eliminates changing the belt to different pulleys.
@qua7771
@qua7771 3 года назад
@Mo no Not necessarily true.
@ripstephenhawking8787
@ripstephenhawking8787 2 года назад
That's true, it would nicely vary your drill press RPM. HOWEVER, you will NOT have the power and torque that you would have by switching the belt pulley ratio. So that's fine if you're running small bits or drilling soft material if the bit is bigger. If all you're doing is running 1/8 holes into plastic sure you can just turn down your power. If you're trying to run a 1inch paddle bit through oak.... just change your pulley. This method is not a remedy for laziness by ANY means. Period

You are welcome, in so MAN, MANY of these kinds of reviews the reviewer has no idea what they are talking about, but they cotton on to something they think is important and they REPEAT and REPEAT and REPEAT the same thing over and over again. To the point were I feel like screaming "I hear you, I've got it don't say it again". I am a retired Cisco, HP, 3Com, Honeywell, Silicon Valley startup engineer with perhaps too much time on my hands. This variac looks terrific, I have always wanted one and I would love to buy it but my wife would simply say "what on Earth have you bought that for" and I would make my usual weak bleating response "It's a toy".

For the money, it's a great deal. It was originally listed for 50 bucks, but they sold out fast and the price went up to $74.99, which to me is still a great price for what it is. Now it's showing $169, no way is it worth $169. For $169 I'd expect much higher quality switches, connections, and voltage meter.

I just picked this model up locally for $20. I was expecting an inefficient humming monster that doubles as a hand warmer but was pleasantly surprised that it is silent and only draws 8 watts no load per a Kill-A-Watt meter. Also the trouble with any electrical gear like this is that you can get along seemingly fine without one, then you do get one and now realize that you need at least 3 of them. One in your test gear arsenal, one to take with you for various tasks on the go, and a third (or more) that gets semi-permanently hooked up to a specific tool or appliance.

Maybe someone could answer a question for me... This will only work well as a speed control on "Brushed" motors? I have two Hazard fart "brushless" motors and it doesn't work quite the same on those... hardly get any speed control and the motor starts to heat up after a few mins of use... I believe the brushless motors are induction motors..

I've personally found that Chinese product crimped terminals are more like the things are flat-squashed as if hit with a hammer than metal crimped. I have seen really bad over heats because of this kind of thing as it forms a high resistance.. On this variac i'd be re-terminating the yellow 'wiper' wire using a quality copper spade terminal at the wiper mech and redoing the actual Earth wire terminal plus giving it its own anchoring point screw, nut, and shakeproof washer onto bright cleaned steel (scratching the paint back). I looks as though the Earth chassis/body connection is via one of the cover screws...
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 7 лет назад
Yes, those ideas are good, and when you only spend 50-75 bucks on a variac like this, you have to expect to do a few minor corrections. If I was spending $150 - $200, I would want a perfect, high quality unit out of the box. Thanks for watching!

I was expecting to see a car running on vapors as the last post comment we talked about. Nice Variac Autotransformer. But only 8 hours? :| what happens after that it shuts down? Are the wires strong enough to last the test of time? Since most of the time they make electronics with cheap material and sometimes best to replace some components (maybe the wire on the wiper as well) to last longer to be more durable. It shows that you need to fix some things since even the meter needs adjusting. lol But still nice. Try a light bulb and see how bright it goes. Not the led or fluorescent since it might mess up I feel. I am also wondering what would be the first component that breaks on this device. hmmm

The use of a glass fuse is extremely dangerous : it should be a ceramic bodied HRC fuse. Under short-circuit fault conditions, the fusible element will vaporise and deposit a conductive film on the glass, which will continue to conduct the fault current and cause the fuse to explode.

I wouldn't say "extremely dangerous", but you do mention valid points. It doesn't happen all the time when a fuse blows, but to eliminate the chance, ceramic fuses filled with sand are used. Even if the deposited metal continued to conduct, the extremely thin layer cannot handle too much current. The glass would also heat up and crack open, not explode. Thanks for watching!

electronicsNmore Maybe the higher distribution voltage we have in Europe makes for a worse situation. Early in my career I was carpeted by my boss for using a glass input fuse on 220 volt equipment - he told me in no uncertain terms to go and look up the maximum voltage rating of the fuse. I can't remember what it was, but it was nowhere close to 220 volts. It was a lesson I never forgot!

Hi, My name is Michael Newell from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. I have a question for you. I recently bought one of these variacs. Mine is the SC-5M model 5A at 500 watts, it says on the casing. My question is this. I heard people on the net say that these Chinese variacs are not very reliable. Mine cost $209.00 shipping included. Seems high compared to Ebay and Amazon. I was intending to use this with my guitar amps to lower the voltage slightly. My amps are 35 watt amp and a 40 watt Fender Blackface Bandmaster vintage amp and a 50 watt amp. Having something reliable is paramount with these amps. They very expensive. I've seen one video where a guy had to add an extra gree n wire to properly grond one of these units to the actual chassis. What can you tell about the reliability on these units? Mine is a 5 amp unit. Does it absolutely have to have a slow blow fuse? To run my guitar amps, I really need exactly 5 amp fuse. My amps are use a3 amp fuse and a 4 amp fuse for the 100 watt amp. They are slow blow always in guitar amps. I noticed that you lowered your fuse by 5 amps in this video. Could I just replace the 5 amp fast blow fuse with one of the same rating , only slow blow?Thanks Michael Newell from Niagara Falls

Just make sure the unit is properly grounded. Trace the power cord ground into the unit, make sure it's connected to the metal housing and the receptacle ground. All inductive loads(motors/transformers/etc) require slow blow fuses to handle the start up current.

@@electronicsNmore , Hi, I opened this housing of this variac from China. From what I can see, the ground wire goes from the AC wire to the input receptacle of the units ground , but there is no second wire going from the AC wire to the actual chassis. I'm just wondering about this. It seems to me that the AC wire ground goes directly to the ground of the input receptacle on the unit which I would assume grounds anything that you plug into this variac. Like I was saying before, this other guy on RU-vid said that he added an additional wire from the AC wire ground to the actual chassis. Is that really necessary? I would think that they would not sell this in the US or Canada if there was a danger to get electrocuted by touching the housing on the variac.please let me know if this absolutely must have an additional wire connected to the chassis. Thanks Michael Newell from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

I don't like that curled wire connecting the wiper on top. It should have been two circular rings sliding over each other. Besides, check the solder connections. Those wires should be attached mechanically (through a hole) and soldered. If ever the solder melts or breaks loose, the wire should stay in place. This would not get UL approval.

Nice purchase but shouldn't those connections inside be crimped or at least shrink wrap covered not just bare soldered? Maybe cable tied back as well. The carbon wiping brush, doesn't that design cause at least one turn to be shorted?
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 7 лет назад
Hi Stephen. The connections inside are fine as is. No reason to cover them, since they cannot be moved around to touch anything(ground), and no fingers can access the area with the unit fully assembled. The brush design is VERY common. Many variacs span 2 turns like this unit, some even span 3! The reason why you don't have a problem with shorted/burned windings, is because the carbon/graphite brush acts like a resistor. The larger the space that electricity has to flow across the brush, the resistance will be higher. When the brush makes contact in only one area, the resistance will be extremely low. Thanks for watching!
@saddle1940
@saddle1940 7 лет назад
Thanks for the reply, but the active connection on the mains switch is side soldered onto the switch. Regardless of whether or where this is the norm, it should be crimped, covered and pushed onto the switch. Minimum would be wrap soldered, twist soldered or splay soldered and then covered or even just covered would do more than this. That switch will flex as it's turned off and on and having seen lots that have gone bad, that connection is very suss. My guess would be, it will break in the long run and float in the box. The earth connection is ganged from the incoming cable to the mains sockets then run from there to the case where it seems to be pressed under a bolt between the inner and outer casing which is isolated from the metal by paint. hard to tell from the video if there is a star washer in there to eat a bit into the metal. The front panel is not metal to metal connected to the rest of the unit as it's powder coated as well. The earth should go to a bolt (without paint under it) on this panel first. Sorry, but there'd be several things needed to be done to this before it'd be allowed in this workshop. Sad part is, it wouldn't take long to do.

The complaint was to point out why it's $50 to $75 and why you should be cautious. Only you can decide which side of a dead versus cheap scale you'd like to sit. Picky? I didn't even start on other things like the "Really, a switch with live and neutral in it before the fuse?". Those 15A switches have a habit of flexing enough to loosen the side pivots (sometimes they just break) and allow the rocket to come out which allows the middle fulcrum bar and spring/ball out of the seasaw. ;-)

@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 5 лет назад
No, it's fine. The variac is protected by the fuse after the power switch. The power switch has an internal light, which allows the user to know if power is being delivered to the variac by the receptacle even if the fuse blows.
@JUANKERR2000
@JUANKERR2000 5 лет назад
@@electronicsNmore You missed the point! With the supply going to the fuse terminal nearer the front panel rather than the rear of the fuse-holder there is a risk of receiving a shock should you be unfortunate (careless?) enough to fit a fuse whilst the supply is on as the fuse will make contact with the supply when the other end of the fuse has not yet entered the holder. No matter how careful one is there is always the risk of a moment's lack of concentration leading to an unpleasant shock even at your mains voltage. :-)

I just bought this exact unit (except it's 240v) and it blew up in 3 seconds flat. As I dialled it up about a third of the way, it made a bang followed by a plume of smoke. On inspection it is a very poorly constructed device. That exposed wire (the 120V active connection to the enamelled winding) is a hazard. Why could they not have put some sort of insulative material here? The case is flimsy and could easily buckle inward during transit (this is a heavy item, mine was in the exact inadequate packaging) which potentially makes this variac a shock hazard. I say this because I also noticed that the ground wire and lug is inadequately connected to the case as it is between two layers of paint. This surely does not meet Australian Standards and is a great example of the inferior products that China swamp our shores with. You should not be endorsing this widow maker in any way shape or form.

Many have bought the same device, and zero problems. My unit still works perfectly to this day. The version in the video is 120V, and you saw the inside of the variac. Clearly yours was defective, and I also have no way of knowing who made the unit, because they all look very similar. I'll agree with the housing being a little flimsy, but you cannot expect tick steel for the very low price. Sounds like the housing was dented in where the wires were soldered to the winding.

im explaining you what you are doing , but you dont seam to get it . Frequency =Speed , in AC motors , Voltage =Speed in DC motors , you just did an experiment , like most Scientist do, and you got your results , and you say Voltage Equals Speed, WRONG . Practical Example #1 Setup a Motor to drive another motor as a generator , and change its speed with that variac observe the output frequency ! (Answer: The number of poles (magnetic poles) and the rotational speed determine the output frequency: Freq = Engine_RPM * Number_Of_Poles / 120.) Practical Example#2 : DRONE Motors . do they have variacs in them ,no they dont , build one , or use just a motor , same result , change its speed , and observe how you change it with voltage or frequency? ( result Frequency) Conclusion : Voltage assuming constant Current =Torque , Frequency =Speed in AC motors , in DC its Voltage =Speed , Current =Torque there is no Frequency involved . If you dont believe me , feel free to challenge me with a practical Demo , and if im wrong call me an idiot, in front of everyone , link my channel , link my posts , say this man is an idiot . @maidsandmuses
@maidsandmuses Год назад
Beware of these cheap chinese units; they fail a few safety aspects: 1) fused only on the input. A variable auto transformer like this needs _two_ fuses, one on the input as shown (optional) but _definitely_ another one also on the _output_ ; the output current is the one likely to be higher and needs to be fused to the safe current rating of the transformer. 2) that coiled cable around the spindle is a very unsafe and cheap construction method and likely to fail at some point; a safe variac uses a slip ring contact for this. 3) the single pole On/Off switch wired as shown is only safe for countries where the outlets have a known neutral/live configuration and the plug cannot be reversed. If this variac is used in a country where the plug can be reversed (e.g. The Netherlands / Germany etc) then there is a danger that the switch breaks the neutral rather than the live and the output will then be at the full 120V or 240V live voltage even with the switch off. One would hope that for those markets the unit is sold with a double pole switch. TBH the use of an auto-transformer in countries where the live & neutral orientation is an unknown is ill-advised; use an isolating variable transformer there (rarer, but they do exist).
