I am back on Short Mountain for the March installment of the Portable Radio Challenge 2021. This time we work 2M simplex in FM, USB, and digital modes. 5W proved to be more power than was required for the JS8Call contacts. I wish I had my 817 with me on this trip.

I had an Arrow antenna which I liked it was just a pain to mount on a tripod and while customer service was very good. I also purchased the Elk antenna, after using the Elk and I was able to receive sats through the trees in my backyard where the Arrow couldn't. I sold the Arrow and kept the ELK antenna. Reception is outstanding, easy to assembly, is perfect on a tripod and you don't get tired holding it. I have used the ELK for repeaters uhf and vhf and I didn't have to lower the tower and rotate the antenna when changing from uhf to vhf. So many pluses with the ELK.

Thanks for another great video Jason! In the army if we had an issue with a signal that was too strong we would turn one or both directional antennas to be slightly offset to lower the signal strength. Give it a try next time, might help.

That looks like a fun experiment. I think 2m ssb is really underutilized. Great job 73 de KF7VUT

Hard to beat a good directional antenna. It would be interesting to see a chart of the terrain along the path. I love these experiments, and JS8 in particular. I hope to see more. I'd like to see if I can shake free on a Saturday when you'll be on Short mountain to see if my GP6 antenna can reach you on JS8. If not, I should finish building my 2m Yagi. Thanks for the great video.

Seemed like you had a great time!! I should of been on the radio, of course I have no beam for 2 Meters, but I would of loved seeing if I could of heard you. When I had a beam for 2 Meters I used to talk to a fella in NC almost every weekend on FM simplex. Of course my beam was a set of stacked 11 element beams. LOL. Bump the rotor and I could here him swishing in and out. LOL Juddie - WD8WV

You need a 90 degree swivel mount with a pull string for quick polarization changes.

I need a good mast for when camping. I picked up the painters pole from Lowes but gets really difficult to hold secure to camper and the aluminum insert probably doesn't help the antenna.

Jason, probably one of your best videos. In my younger years I worked a lot of VHF/UHF weak signal on CW/SSB. I have 41 states on 2m and 32 states on 70cm. But mine were all from the “Low Lands”. On most evenings QSO’s were usually out 300 to 400 miles under normal conditions. But that was with stacked arrays at 115’ and 500 to a thousand watts. But I worked 20 states in one night on 3 watts during an opening. But you have to be there to work them. I still get as big a kick working a new Grid Square on VHF/UHF as working a new DXCC Entity!

That's an odd limitation of high gain antenna's - you need an attenuator :) LOL

I have a similar mast but its 6ft and can go to 32FT. I agree its not fast up and down but I like the one you have because it looks to fit in a Jeep. I really like the front mast mount. Where did you get that mount? I have a receive mount that works but I like the front mount.
@KM4ACK
@KM4ACK 3 года назад
The mount is a prototype from TN07.com. Just talked to Bob and he said he could hook you up with one as well. I had something similar before but this is light years ahead. Absolutely rock solid once you lock it down in the winch.

A question on the Winlink position report ... how is the lat/long populated? I've got a RPi setup with Build-A-Pi but I don't have a GPS source yet (haven't gotten around to it yet!).
@KM4ACK
@KM4ACK 3 года назад
It is populated from the GPS but you can enter it manually I believe as well. You might also want to use the GPS built into your phone ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rkmQxvT8BpQ.html

It's a tac-comm case. I haven't tried the 891 but suspect it will fit without issue. I did a review on it a couple of years ago ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3hiNQl0Qz1w.html

Whilst you can't lower the RF power on the radio any lower than 5w, there is nothing stopping you reducing the TX audio level in software to put out a weaker signal.

I have been waiting on someone to point this out. You are correct. In the heat of the moment I was so excited with the results that I totally forgot. Doh. There’s always next time.
@andrewhamop6665
@andrewhamop6665 3 года назад
@@KM4ACK Honestly in that situation, some radios allow you to turn the RF output off! That would still allow you to put out a few hundred miliwatts , and probably still make that JS8Call contact hahaha! That log periodic almost seemed to transmit better than it received, or maybe that was just the voice stations. That was really awesome!

Good video. If you’re looking for a much lighter mast Buddipole makes one that’s less than 4 pounds. It’s not quite as long, about 19’, but it collapses shorter and likely isn’t as stiff as what you have now but it is still stable. If you’d like to try it out I have one at the house. I think that you’re in WCARES, just look me up and send me an email, or look me up on QRZ. I’m K4IDK.
