We have found the Larger Westminster Catechism helpful to explain this section of the law. (I just copied and pasted to save you some time.) Q 109. What are the sins forbidden in the second commandment? A. The sins forbidden in the second commandment are, all devising, counseling, commanding, using, and anywise approving, any religious worship not instituted by God Himself; the making any representation of God, of all, or of any of the three persons, either inwardly in our mind, or outwardly in any kind of image or likeness of any creature whatsoever; all worshiping of it, or God in it or by it; the making of any representation of feigned deities, and all worship of them, or service belonging to them; all superstitious devices, corrupting the worship of God, adding to it, or taking from it, whether invented and taken up of ourselves, or received by tradition from others, though under the title of antiquity, custom, devotion, good intent, or any other pretence whatsoever; simony; sacrilege; all neglect, contempt, hindering, and opposing the worship and ordinances which God hath appointed. This has helped shape our convictions on why we don’t use any images of Jesus or angels. As far as art and appreciating beauty, I believe that is permissible as long as it isn’t being worshipped and labeled as “God”.

Can you do a video why you don't celebrate Christmas, and have you always not celebrated Christmas in your family?

@@ashlieleavelle perhaps at some point we could do that. Thanks for the suggestion.

The Puritans believed all images were idolatry. They wouldn’t have pictures in their homes. Personally, I’m against images of Jesus, and I don’t do anything angelic either. I also tend to stay away from mythical creatures, and my children aren’t allowed superheroes. I believe artwork is allowed though, based on the fact the temple was full of it. In fact God provided skilled craftsmen to ensure that it was full of beautiful imagery. I do tend to enjoy mostly Bible verses on my walls though, as God commands us to write His words on our walls. Blessings

We especially enjoy having Scriptures on our walls to remind us of His Word throughout the day.

If we look at images and we worship them that is wrong. Anything can become an idol so we must be cautious but I also know God knows our hearts. My gut tells me it’s ok to look at a picture in love and respect or for memories sake when it becomes wrong is when we place those images in front of God or acted like we couldn’t communicate w God wo an image. We are all a work in progress. I definitely think it’s possible to over think things.

I’m not understanding the confusion. I interpreted it as worshiping something like the calf or an Egyptian God as an example. The Israelites made a golden calf and worshipped it and said it delivered them out of Egypt. Things in our home aren’t Gods. If we make the choice to worship them yes but I’m not understanding the confusion.

If Jesus was a carpenter then making functional, even beautiful things would be ok I would imagine. Just don't idolise or indeed idealise anyone or thing apart from our unseen but ever present Father God.

I think you are touching on the true meaning. The key is not to WORSHIP anything but God alone. Pictures, statues, and images can be aids to prayer and worship, but that picture etc.. is NOT being worshipped. Just like if you have a picture of your deceased parents in a beautiful frame in your home, and when you look at the picture it invokes memories and fondness and love, but you are NOT worshipping the picture. Same is true for holy images. God is saying He is a jealous God and wants nothing put before Him. This might be another commandment or scripture, but this can encompass work, exercise, screens etc…God wants to be #1 in our lives and we can put Nothing before Him.

not sure why you talk about a movie and what Jesus looked like has nothing to do with the second commandment. anything you worship over God is what this is talking about. You have no other God before me. Only worship God only.

@@peggysuegiggles9383 the movie was an example we’ve been given in the past of what to avoid.
