There are two different ways to write addition problems. Horizontal: write the addends as a number sentence in which the addends are across from each other in a row. Vertical: write the addends stacked as one above the other in place value columns. It's important that we line up the digits of the addends in columns so we will add ones with ones and tens with tens. We show how to rewrite an addition problem, then add. Sometimes the addends will be easy to add without rewriting them into columns, such as when we're adding a "tens number" or when digits have a low value and regrouping isn't necessary. Sometimes when we add using mental math, it may be easier to begin adding the greatest place value first. We solve two word problems that involve 2-digit addition with regrouping. Note to parents: Stacked vertically is called the "standard algorithm format".
