„Zeit“ (time) Three creatures of destiny are named: their names are Urd (fate), Verdandi (that which is to come) and Skuld (guilt; that which should be). Their names are considered to be Norse equivalents of common medieval notions of time in the form of personifications of the past (Urd), present (Verdandi) and future (Skuld). The song deals with the theme of death and the transience of life. These motifs are expressed within the video through various images and metaphors. At the beginning, when the band members are drowning in the sea, Lindemann sings about the river of time, in which all people are trapped. This metaphor is visualized by the drowning in the video. In the war scene, where children first play war and later a battle actually takes place, the band sings about the inability to stop the future: "You can't summon the future, you don't tolerate a stay". In the same place where children used to play, they now die in war. The song expresses the wish that the beautiful moments as children should always last. The women who give birth to their children at the Sandstrom represent the cycle of time. In the same place where the dead daughter will later appear, children will also be born. The farmer and his daughter are separated in a moment that seemed perfect for them. The father tries to stop his daughter, but fails. Accordingly, he mourns the moment. The character in the video is clearly identifiable as Death by the black cloak. However, the video also equates it with the concept of time, as the passage of time means everyone has to die at some point. Referring to the band, some fans and journalists suspect that Zeit could be Rammstein's last album, which could be another meaning of the album and song name.

This is not quite correct. The 3 goddesses of fate appear in many cultures, e.g. also as Moirs in Greek mythology or Parcenes in Roman mythology, the Etruscans called them Lasen and the Slavs Zorya. So it does not necessarily have to be the 3 Nordic goddesses of fate.
I believe its about how time is always being stolen away from us, whether time with a loved one, or a perfect moment, or a period of your life (or your entire life) - it never lasts quite long enough and before you know it it's gone. And the sand representing the unstoppable sands of time constantly flowing, and people and moments being lost to it.

Till Lindemann's father was a well known poet. There was a character in medieval Germany, Till Eulenspiegel, a Courts Jester, he was allowed to hold the mirror up (mirror means Spiegel) to the King! For a poet a well chosen name for his son.

It´s about time and loss. Time never stops running no matter how much we wish it would stop. Especially the "perfect moments" that everbody knows and wishes to last. The refrain means: "Time...please stand still, stand still." I also feel like it´s about passing the torch. We become dust and from that dust evolves new life which becomes dust again. Classical theme. So you hit the point quite right with "circle of life". Look at that picture at 5:07 (right before the graphic birth-backwards-picture): There´s a giant hour glass with the same scenery on both ends of the glass.I didn´t recognize it the first time watching since there´s so much mysterious symbolic visuals going on in that video. As a german understanding the text, the video makes me tear up almost every time I see it. Rammstein are getting sentimental it seems (Til´s gonna be 60 next year, he´s my father´s age), and I love them even more for that. Keep on rockin´! (...and getting positively confused by Rammstein-Vids ;)

Zeit means "Time". So this song is about the desperate desire to cling on to moments in life, knowing that death is an uncertain distance away. Since we only know that our time is coming, not when, so we need to live every moment as if it's our last, because it could be.
This song is absolutely destroying me. My friend is dying from cancer. She was living with it but it's getting bad. I was giving her a huge gentle hug & she was gripping me like we would never see each other again as I live 4 hours away from her now. It was der perfekt moment & I'm like zeit bitter blab stehn Update She's slipped away overnight. Oh my God this hurts

It's all about time, it never freezes, never rewinds, and doesn't speed up. It continues on at the same pace, despite us wanting it to stop, go back, or even fast forward.
Another thing that came to my the babies being put back in to the mother to be born again on earth and also coming back in a sense they died on earth and are now being born in the other world and their birth or rebirth on earth is them already starting to die because as soon as your born your dying..your dying to live or as Rammstein put it "Wir sterben weiter bis wir leben" "We keep dying until we live" because in a sense what we perceive as dying is us actually being born again into the other world that's why the girl in the end seems happy when she dies because she knows that her death here means her being born over there..if that makes any Sense? This is art at its finest..a true Masterpiece!!

Just my thoughts.......life is made up of thousands of points in time that exist in our memories, death is the end point of time for any one person. Since those 3 things are so closely intertwined (life, death, and time) it could be construed that they are all the same thing. We've all heard "time waits for no man", and everyone has their favorite memories that they wish time would stop so it can be enjoyed longer, still there is a time when death comes for us all and we want it to be delayed because we are not ready. Time cannot even pause. It must relentlessly march on. The only thing that we can do is to make as many of those points in time as memorable as possible.
It was kind of easy to figure out once we saw it a second time. We never review, research or watch a video before we see it with you guys. Keep on rocking babies. ✌🏻🎶🤘🏻🖤

If someone else explains it to you, then you are getting their interpretation, not your own. Rammstein songs are deliberately evocative, implicit and ambiguous, like poetry. They don't have a single explicit meaning. Till Lindemann has stated publicly, and wisely, he doesnt want to comment on the lyrics, as not to contaminate the process of subjective interpretation. Whatever the song makes you feel and think is the appropriate meaning
I understand what you’re saying and half to agree 100%. I think I just had the same conversation with another fan about their songs mean whatever you interpret personally. Though I agree with you about the ambigous and implicit character of most of Til´s text´s, I disagree with you on this one. The lyrics of this song are pretty simple and direct in terms of message and meaning. The video however adds a little bit more symbolic content to process. But, well, you´re right in that this is just my interpretation ;)
My interpretation and thought was time goes on like a continuous cycle and those rare occasions when we are truly happy of course we want time to stop. The showing of the sand and hourglass ⌛ time keeps going and them showing the scenes reversing to me meant a desire to go back in time either to the moment of birth and start our lives over or to before we're even born saying no i don't even want to be born i want to go back before i was even conscious of my own existence and mortality. Them being blindfolded to me was no one knows whats going to happen in the future we don't know what kind of lives these babies are going to have.

"Zeit" means 'time' in German. the video is basically time running backwards. There's much more to it philosophically. I know I heard something in the lyrics about a 'perfect moment', for instance.

We would like Time to stop, or even go backwards, but it won't happen. The sand clock is emptying and nothing will stop it. The fishermen will drown, the soldiers won't go back to kids holding harmless fake guns, and we will not go back to our mom's womb. The three keepers of time decide when our life will end, when we start living we also start to die. But the keepers also hold newborns in their arms, they also decide that new souls will be born. When our time as come the reaper will come for us and our loved ones. And the circle of life and death will repeat itself. In a distant past, the band members ancestors lived a happy, simple life in a rural area, but Oliver's (the bassist) wife (or sister or daughter?) is taken away in her prime and there's nothing he can do. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
We usually view subtitles, if they’re available, after we’ve done a reaction to the original video in German or whatever other language is being spoken. It’s fun to try to interpret the meaning of the words by the actions in the video. Of course, Rammstein can be very hard to figure out with just the video or even with the subtitles.
