I had so much fun, and learnt a lot, testing all the different xDrive and M Traction modes on the Goodwood Skid Pan.
A big thanks to Joe Achilles who suggested I ask Goodwood to use their excellent Low Grip Skid Pan Facility again, during the week that I had BMW UKs G80 M3 Competition xDrive press car, so I could test the extensive range of driving modes between 4WD, 4WD SPORT, DSC ON, DSC OFF, plus 2WD in the various levels of M Traction. Very impressive!

Yeah agreed. 4wd sport in MDM means skids and grips at the same time! Just awesome.

That was interesting to see all the modes mate, well explained. I just leave my m3 in mdm all the time, just lets it play that bit but keeps it in safe limits, esp for the road/daily driving. This though looks like another level in terms of intelligence. How you see it trying to figure out where the grip/traction is to save you. Thats properly cleverly. Great video, need to get me one of those GW skid days!

This is a fantastic ‘how to’ video. I tried it in my G83 M4 Competition Convertible M X drive and it absolutely works. Traction control 5 works well for me.

Thank you, great job ! Been trying to understand the different drive control systems on my new M4 Comp. (just for normal driving) - this really clarified. Not surprised BMW were interested as they need to do a better job on helping customers better understand the different effects. As positive feedback would have loved to see synced videos of you steering and outside shots to see the effect as well as your great explanations. Also, maybe a summary table of different settings vs handling characteristics. Maybe BMW could use your video to help them do this ? Again, great job.

Thanks buddy, it's a great system on the BMWs in my opinion. Very clever. It adjusts the traction AND stability control, not just the traction control like some other cars. Thanks for the feedback. What other camera angle would have added more information? The over the shoulder camera captured the movement outside the car plus my wheel position which shows what I was doing and where the wheels were pointing. Not sure what else would have added to that?

There is no point in doing that the car is automatically 2wd if it sense that it doesn’t need to send power to the front

Not true. And not as simple as that. It's always 4wd unless you tell it to be rwd. It constantly moves the power between the wheels but never all to the back in 4wd mode.

It is possible to manually switch of the front axle --> 2WD mode. Based on the given driving conditions, e.g. constant highway cruising, the system will also automatically decouple the front axle in 4WD and 4WD Sport mode to operate more efficiently.” “What is the reaction time of the system engaging/disengaging the AWD? Normally, just the torque transfer to the front axle is varied, its variation takes less than 150ms. Returning from efficiency mode shift time is less than 400ms.” “So even in 4WD, the torque is sent to the front only when needed? Or there is always some torque going? MDM is very clever. It doesn't slow down the cars reactions but let's the car rotate more while still keeping it under some control. It's doesn't try and completely straighten the car. Traction control at 10 is in RWD mode only and is the equivalent of TC ON. 5 is like MDM. And 0 is OFF. Hope that helps... 👊

I don't think so, they've always talked about it. You can do a drift experience in the BMWs, or I think you can use your own car on the Thruxton skid pan...

Prob not, MDM in a BMW M car, or a similar system is called Traction Mode in normal BMWs, is a halfway mode with the Traction Control whereby it will allow you to have more slip and slide, but if it all goes horribly wrong it is still there trying to save you, unless you've completely messed it up! 😉

@@reversoworld5348 Haha. No not really, and it's easier to practice with less grip at a slower speed. I think Thruxton is the only place I know that let you use your own car. We've been trying to get Goodwood to use your own car on certain days and it's always talked about but not yet! 😉

No it wouldn't though would it? The camera is only on me soley when there's nothing going on outside, and then it's picture in picture with the main picture being a shot over my shoulder so you can see my inputs to the car as it's moving around relative to what you can see happening outside. If I listened to you and it was on the dash, it would be the bonnet and the skid pan, and you'd have no idea of what I was having to do or not do to control the slide!

@@RickTheSpud Sorry I mean camera facing the dash as in the gauges, so replacing the small picture in picture. In this case you have a camera sitting far enough back we can see the wheel and steering inputs

Nothing happens on the gauges that has any relevance to wants going on. The traction lights flash in various modes but that's it. 🤷‍♂️
