This Fairey Gannet XT752 is named Janet. She's a nuclear capable weapons platform, submarine destroyer built in 1954 as the worlds first dual-control prototype T2 Fairey Gannet. The Gannet type are the only aircraft in the world to bi-fold its wings in such a way. She is the oldest Turboprop aircraft flying in the world today. Prepare to be amazed!

I used to service this aircraft at Lossiemouth 1970 -72. 849 squadron. It's wonderful to see the old lady still flying. Looks like she's had a new coat of paint since I last worked on her. We used to use cartridges to start her. Brilliant

As a mechanical designer who began in the days before CAD, when I see the mechanics of that folding wing I can almost feel the scratch of 4H graphite on toothy vellum as it's being laid out. Janey is a thing of beauty in the eye of this beholder.

Another interesting point is the Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba uses separate gearboxes. The failed Allison XT40 used two powerplants connected to a single gearbox driving the contra-rotating "axial" propellers. And that single unit was the weak point on this failed powerplant system.

Not so much beautiful but extremely functional by design. It's form and shape come from the functions it was designed to fulfill and the conditions under which it was to operate, but, yes, it does have a strange appeal.

+Afterburner G'day, Well mate you're half right. In the Air, from the Ground yeah it looks pretty good, sort of like a British Turboorop version of a Grumman Avenger, and Air-to-Air it doesn't look too bad..; but on the Ground, from the Ground...., it looks roughly as ugly as the proverbial "Hatful of Arseholes"... Still, never mind, Blackburn's Cobblings were always uglier than Fairey's Tinkerings ; compared to the Roc, why the Battle was almost elegant...(!). Take it easy, ;-p Ciao !

+Afterburner G'day, Thanks ! Sorry, I only just found your reply...; my Channel runs on a prepaid Mobile Phone & I only seem to get notifications on my own Threads... Some Aeroplanes are genuinely ugly...; +Judy Robus Channel has a good Video about Ugly Aircraft, and in there are some still photographs of a Soviet Agricultural-Device which was a Turbojet-powered Biplane with a Fixed-Undercarraige, and the Interplane Struts were big fat streamlined Pesticide-Hoppers feeding Spraybars under the bottom wing - it's one of the ugliest Hairygoplanes I've ever seen. My own first Aeroplane has often been described as "Horrifying" rather than "Ugly" ; but that's because it was 2-Axis Controlled, had Single-Surface Aerofoils, and Lawnmower Engine...., to see it title-search YT for, "The 8 Hp, 1975, Red-Baron Skycraft Scout ; World's 1st Legal Minimum Aircraft..." or backtrack me to my "Personal Aeroplanology..." Playlist. Have a good one, ;-p Ciao !

The aim of shutting down one engine was to provide “loitering “ time in a specific search area . The extra range was not as important as the time spent in the vicinity of possible sub targets !
@pootmahgoots8482
@pootmahgoots8482 5 лет назад
Isn't that the same thing? I mean the whole point of having extra endurance with one engine running?
@elsacane8495
@elsacane8495 5 лет назад
Drew S No it is not 5.5 hours in air on one engine versus 3 hours with both running . The speed of the aircraft is a factor of 5 to 7 times faster than a high speed submarine . My father engaged in several NATO exercises and the long loiter time enabled the cat and mouse game to play to a conclusion because submarine commanders could be very clever in eluding searches from the surface forces .

@elsacane8495 5 лет назад
Drew S His figures are out of whack with ops as the aircraft is not always expected to go at max cruise for the mission whether on one side of the Double Mamba or both sides .Range is actually the total distance it can fly on a fuel load . The bottom line was it was highly suitable for its mission , so much so that the German Navy flew a couple of squadron !

They were so low I could almost touch them, or so it seemed. When I looked back down at my father’s mate his fishing rod and basked were in the air and he was running up the beach with his arms over his head and dived into the sand. He was still shaking hours later. I’ve never forgotten this. I can still hear the buzz of those planes and see him.

The Fairey Gannet AEW (with the radar bulge under the fuselage) was the Royal Navy's eyes in the sky. F.A.A.squadrons operated on carriers with these AEW Gannets in the 1960's. I served on H.M.S. Centaur. As we know, by the time the Falklands war came along, some penny pinching bureaucrat at the M.O.D. had given these valuable Gannets the chop, and look what happened !!
@jospi2

You won the war?
@Kimdino1
@Kimdino1 6 лет назад
+jospi2 Yes, but Argentinian aircraft were able to get into missile range and sink several ships. The RN was having to rely on SeaKing helicopters to watch the surrounding airspace. The Gannets would have been able to cover a much bigger AEW area, and could stay up for longer. The Gannets would have spotted the Argentinian Super-Etendards well before they got into missile range. Two of the carriers sent out had operated Gannets, so they were known to be capable. So, saving the cost of refitting a few Gannets cost the UK half a dozen ships + other casualties.
@stephenshepherd8740
@stephenshepherd8740 6 лет назад
Of the two carriers, Invincible had never operated Gannets. It's flight deck was far too short and besides that, it had a ski jump on the end to assist Harriers taking off. As for the other carrier, Hermes had indeed operated Gannets but she had been converted to operate Harriers, also with a ski jump on the end (and I wouldn't have been surprised if the catapults and arresting gear had been removed too). The Gannet could never have operated off it, and we were damn lucky to have any fixed wing aircraft at all but for the Navy's subterfuge in the late '60s and '70s to overcome the decision to have no more aircraft carriers (the Invincible Class CVSs were officially 'through deck cruisers' during procurement, replacements for the Tiger and Blake - submarine hunters). Sea King AEW only came along after the war finished, despite huge efforts to get it ready in time. The Argentinians had a huge advantage in operating the same Type 42 destroyers and so could find the weaknesses of our primary air defence asset. The Gannet AEW would have been MASSIVELY useful, but quite impossible to operate by 1982.

Before WW2, the Fairey company had produced a piston-engine, the P.24, that successfully operated as two separable "halves", giving the same operating advantages as the "Mamba" turboprop. This engine was more powerful than the 'Merlin' and was trialled in the U.S., before the British Air Ministry cancelled any further work on the revolutionary engine in order to prioritise the "Merlin" and similar conventional engines. The P.24 could have been as useful as the "Mamba" in providing the power of a twin-engine within a compact airframe for service on the cramped straight-deck WW2-vintage aircraft-carriers. The sad thing is that in 1982 RN officers were checking how many Ganets they could scrape together, ( especially the AEW version,) to fly from HMS Victorious which, in theory, was still in reserve for the Falklands war. Alas Victorious had been allowed to detieriate and could not be made ready in time.

I joined Thorn EMI Electronics in west London in summer of '83, they'd been telling the Navy they needed modern AEW protection for the carriers but wasn't until the terrible sinkings in the Falkland that the Navy got the AEW Seaking prototype which EMI & Westlands designed and built in very short time, based on the Searchwater radar used in Nimrods. A year or so later I was in the mechanical design section / drawing office at EMI doing the subsequent development work to fully commission the AEW Seakings, had a couple of ex Fairey staff on the team from nearby Heston of course.

I visited the Air Museum at Moorabbin years ago and when I came across the Gannet I found myself gobsmacked. What an aircraft. Hard to describe, no sleek beauty like a classic Spitfire, more utilitarian designed to do the job in the tough environment of aircraft carrier operations where shipboard space is at a premium out at sea and the need for two engines is vital for crew survival.

Powered by the Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba - that's a mouthful - just think. If the Douglas XA2D-1 "Skyshark" had been equipped with this power-plant(s) it might very well have been a successful replacement for the A-1. But then again, we would never have seen the awesome Douglas A4D "Skyhawk" AKA "Scooter."

What is not mentioned is that the arrangement of two independent engines working through two contra-rotating propellers was especially well suited to a high endurance naval plane designed for loitering. It provided the redundancy of the second engine along with the extra power for take-off but in a compact, narrow package compared to a standard turboprop twin design. Then it could be flown, with extra endurance, but turning off an engine and feathering the prop without affecting flying characteristics save the loss of power. What's more, if a standard twin engined turboprop aircraft has an engine-out problem, they can be next to impossible to land on the small carrier deck due to the asymmetry of thrust which can be very difficult to compensate for. On land there's a lot more room for such a landing. In the case of the Gannet, the thrust is all down the centre line, whether running on one or two engines. As a concept, it was brilliant. The fact that one can be kept flying almost 70 years after it was built means that it can't be impossibly difficult to work on either. Like a lot of those early turboprops (and jets), they lack the complex electronics of modern machines.

What a wonderful achievement to restore this amazing aircraft to airworthiness. One can see that it is beautifully maintained. I understand there are one or two others which are in some stage of restoration to flight, though no doubt it's an expensive and difficult proposition.

They are not the only ones. The Germans bought them and so did the Indonesians. The Aussies were the only other nation to operate them from a carrier. There are 5 on display in Australia, 2 in Indonesia, 4 in Germany and 9 in the UK, of which 2 are trainers, 3 are Electronic Counter Measures aircraft and 4 are Airborne Early Warning aircraft. Only one Gannet is airworthy and that's Janet the Gannet, XT752. It was converted to AEW to provide the carriers with early warning since the Sea King Helicopters could loiter longer than the Gannets and use a dip sonar to find the submarines. The Sea Kings could not fly as far as the Gannets, but they could carry far more disposable sonar buoys and more crew.

I live in the states and have never seen one of these before. When I served in the Navy back in the 70's, I worked on the F-14 Tomcat. It was a beautiful plane but, it seems like the uglier ones were the real work horses of aviation. Those are the ones that have several years, if not decades, of service. Great piece of history.
