Tucked away in the Missouri Botanical Gardens are some unassuming greenhouses that house the United States' largest private research collection of Aroids in the family Araceae, which include well-known plants like Philodendron, Anthurium, Spathiphyllum, Monstera, Rhaphidophora, Alocasia, Colocasia, Amorphophallus-and some lesser known genera including Rhodospatha and Steudnera, for example.
In this episode (Part 1 of 2), we tag along with the Aroid Greenhouse curator, Emily Coletti, who has the tall task of not only keeping up with Dr. Tom Croat's, (the world's leading expert on New World Araceae) constant flow of living material-but also taking care of nearly 3,700 different plants.
