As always after viewing your lectures I dive into rabbit holes. I found and read the original NYT article "Jews in Grave Danger in All Muslim Lands" and found the numbers astounding. About 900,000 Jews in all Arab lands in 1948 with tiny numbers in those lands today. One would have to imagine how many would still be there 75 years later if this would not have occurred. The article states that Iraqi Jews would have to leave $20,000 USD each to leave, this is about $250,000 in today's money. Astounding. Thank you fellow Canadian, I have enjoyed your lectures for a few years. Indeed, 109 need to return.

Fascinating as always. I would also add the intellectual waters Sefardim and Ashkenazim were swimming in. Whereas Jews were free to pursue the arts and sciences in the Arab/Muslim world, and were surrounded by likeminded thinkers, Ashkenazi Jews had little interest in Middle Ages Catholic European offerings, causing them to look further inwards.

One of the main reasons why Turkey is different from other Islamic countries and its neighbors in the Middle East is that it accepts Jews of Sephardic origin from Spain into its country. Many Jews belonging to the Sabbatean movement that emerged from this group played a role in the establishment of secular Turkey, both as politicians and intellectuals.

My great-grandfather also had a textile shop here in Italy! My uncle recently took a DNA test and turns out he's about 70% Middle Eastern with the remaining being italian, spanish and Greek... So I assume we're Sephardic and not Ashkenazi as we previously thought. Or more probably a mix of italkim, Sephardic and Ashkenazi. Thanks for all the great work you do. Greetings from Milan. 🇮🇹

Shalom Rabbi. Jews believe that when Messiah comes, third Temple will be built, and he will rule. (Or another opinion: Jews must build Third Temple first, then Messiah comes & rule). My question: What will Messiah do to 80% of secular, liberal and atheists Israeli Jews who eat, wear, and do anything they want. They don't obey Torah. Thank you for your answer.

Very good lecture professor. Can you research Jews of Caucus Mountains? Thousands years of historical presence in Azerbaijan, Dagestan, and in Georgia. Jews came to these places in several waves starting with 10 lost tribes and subsequent migrations from Persia and Europe. We do not trace our ancestry to Khazars.

Hi Dr. Abramson, I just wanted to echo the point which you have been emphasizing that the Inquisition and ultimately the expulsion from Spain played an integral role in shaping the Sephardic Jewry mindset and identity. I am a Sephardic jew of moroccan descent (from the megorashim). I would like to share with you one of the last lines written in my ketouba to give some insight, which I'm sure you will appreciate: הכל כפי המנהג והתנאי והתקנה שנהגו והתקינו להיות בינהם קהל הקדושים המגורשים מקאסטילייא ה' יקום נקמתם ויחון ויחמול וירחם על שארית פליטתם השומר אמת לעולם מעתה ועד עולם.

Amazing lectures. A young Bobov bachur said he learned in the yeshiva that prior to the expulsion (from Spain or Portugal?) there was no difference between Ashkenazim and Sefaradim. I know that Chassidim from Bobov have many customs that I personally grew up with , a lot of Kabbalistic things, their siddur is very similar to my Sephardic Edut Hamizrach siddur, but why they have this tradition is not clear to me. Maybe the Chassidim were sefaradim?

Hello! Portuguese here. It seems you make a distinction between portuguese jews as sephardic jews. Even if Sepharad is the hebrew name of Spain, I always thought portuguese jews as sephardic. Can you please clarify.

Please, help me. Do you know some genealogist ? I need to make my genealogic tree. I made my DNA test and I have cousins in CZ, DE, USA, UK, France, Spain, Holand, Ukraine, Poland, and I have Ashkenazi DNA, Sefaradi, Mizrahi, Marroco, etc ... My mother's family is from Minas Gerais, Brazil. I'm stuck in 1840 and I don't know where my ancestors born.... I can't find any documents... If they came from Azores they mixed or take surnames to hide.... I need a historiador genealidsta. Thank you

interesting about being afraid that people are being buried alive. when the sikhs were going through the debate of whether fllowers were laid on the right or left of guru nanak (one meaning bury me and the other being cremation), there were similar scares in villages of people waking up and running out screaming from the shroud etc. i think this is an old theatric to scare people into cremation. i'm sure the crowding of bodies and the expensive growth in real estate was happening at the same time.

About that odd 1772 False Burial scare thing: There was this 1755 Vampire-scare in the Austrian Empire that took hold when people saw deceised wandering about in their dreams, sucking their blood and strenght, shortly before they themselves died, what caused the villaged to dig their graves up and decapitate and empale their hearts, where a doctor was sent to investigate. (I seem to remember he found some Malaria in the region). Already before that there was the odd case of the Princess Eleonore Lobkovitz-Schwarzenberg, where her doctor, Franz v Gerstorf, was unsure what exactly she had died of, and cut her open, what alarmed the nobility. (I'm not sure if Gersdorf was the same that was sent out to investigate on the Vampire-village having gathered some 'occult'-experience, the doctor on the report on the village left only his initials.) All around Europe some graves were opened afterwards, some were found, where the bodies had obviously moved, mummies were found in crypts that seemed to have died only after burial trying to lift their casket-lids. A bit later came the general order to have a doctor check on people's bodies, to find the reason of death. And it happened - rarely, but still - that (at least before the doctor cut them open to check on their inner organs) some people were found to be alife. So there was a point to buy this funny machine.

My family is from Christian/Jewish Polsiye. Different Ashkenazi tribes had different outfits and meanings. Ours wore big stripes with designs in them. Red stripes. People think now that is was black and white but thats not true.

Why did the Ashkenazim contributed so much to the progress of mankind while the Mizrahi didn't do much? Are there any great scientist or musician or writer or artist of Mizrahi ancestry?
@FloriaTosca8
@FloriaTosca8 3 месяца назад
This is anti-Semitic propaganda. Many Mezrahi formed the backbone of medieval Arab and Persian science and literature. These great people are simply presented to you as Arabs or Persians. Read carefully who the Bukhara and Arab mathematicians and astronomers and Persian poets were. Be surprised - Mizrahim Jews.

Ironic how you call Christian culture secular because religious christians would refer to Jews as part of secular or even atheist/worldly culture.
