I love the fact that it was one of Lady Mormont's shields that stops Ramsay's arrows. So at least one of the 62 made it into Winterfell.

Not to mention that Jon's sword is already a Mormont sword, clearly showing the strong connection he has with the family: the Mormonts were the reason he ever made it pass a humble squire and made it to King in the North.

While we have very little connection with Rickon, you know Jon loves him like he does any of his brothers, and considering jon hasnt seen rickon since leaving for the wall, Rickon is still that little boy in his mind. When Jon is facing the cavalry and the sad music is playing and he draws his sword. Man, I actually thought, “Damn, this is gonna be like the rest of his family, this is Jon’s end” and I felt so sad and wanted to cry, then out of no where his army comes in and everything is chaotic. Hands down, best scene, in my opinion, I’ve ever seen.

Honestly what really drew me into cementing this as the greatest battle sequence of all time was the mound of corpses they had to traverse. In all other movies or shows. Sure it shows corpses strewn about the battlefield, but they never seem to impede or affect the characters. Simply there for set design and decor, whereas in BoB it has an actual effect on the tide of the battle and all those involved and gave credence to “holy shit hundreds and hundreds of dudes just collided and are slaughtering one another in a centralized location.” Absolute masterclass 11/10 bravo (5/7 for my Imgur brethren)

This was an EXCELLENT analysis, CineFix. I like the depth you take in explaining not only the technical aspects, but especially the directorial and audience aspects of the shot. Things like WHY the director chose a particular technique, or framing, or the beats of the flow - and then the audience's reaction to it, why we react the way we do, and how it ties to the previously covered directorial/technical aspects. Brilliant work, and I'd LOVE to see more "deep dives" like this one.

I liked how he threw the sword aside and picked up the Mormont shield - it was what he needed at the time and a nice way to show the Mormont family has been the single constant companion of the cause for good throughout the show (Jorah for Danerys, the Old Bear for Jon, and Lyanna for the Stark cause in general). Its a good little payoff.

I’ll never get over how sad the moment was when Rickon died. You could see the utter horror and self loathing John felt in that moment. All the people he has saved, all the close calls he’s ever had and survived, doing everything he could to save that boy his brother and it didn’t matter Rickon still died. He couldn’t save him and it just rips my heart out every time I see it. I could understand why John wanted to die. I would never want to live with that moment. I’d have nightmares forever if that happened to me.

This is the most epic battle scene to date. The best part that no other show managed to create was real tension about heroes dying in this fight. Who will live and who is going to die was real and at no point you got the impression that anyone was safe from getting killed. Anything could happen in these minutes and that was a spectacular experience. Truly the most epic battle scene ever. 👍

@TimothyBrake
@TimothyBrake 5 лет назад
cardaroy that was the previous best entertaining battle sequence. Just watched it again and compared to the intensity of game of thrones it must bow its head as you already know in the back of your head it will have a happy ending and the story line in the movies doesn’t get you emotionally invested in characters like game of thrones does, simply because there isn’t enough screen time.. I liked the gritty part of ‘the battle of the bastards’ and anyone could be killed and sword fights were more realistic compared to Gandalf switching and spinning his stick, knocking down a fully armored enemy like it was nothing. I liked it and in context of Lord of the Rings, it works. Game of thrones went another more realistic route, of course the pile of men was exaggerated and once surrounded they should have been swiftly killed by the surrounding precession... but that’s nitpicking I guess. The overall realism and anything can happen, makes the sequence more intense. ‘The long night’ episode then took another route but let’s stick to this sequence 😀

There is another element of the arrow to the back. The closer John gets to Rickon the less he pays attention to Ramsey, in the three first arrows he was far away enough to see the arrow shot, but the closer he gets he is looking more at Rickon. The entire scene is from John’s point of view

@jjh2456 6 лет назад
That scene was also a call back to the very first episode of the show when Ned is executing the deserter. Jon tell Bran “Don’t look away or Father will know if you do.” If you remember when the dogs start devour Ramsey, Sansa steps away for a quick second. However she gathers herself and continues to watch him get ripped apart. For her the dogs are her sword and she is carrying Ramsey’s execution so she has to keep watching until it’s done. Once it is she then turns and walks away for good with a little tiny smile on her face. That smile notes that after everything she has gone through, she has finally reclaimed her Stark heritage.

The Sansa shot can easily be explained. House Stark have a tradition of whoever passes sentence carries out the sentence. Jon did not kill Ramsey because of what Sansa said before the battle, "You are going to die tomorrow Lord Bolton, sleep well". Sansa passed sentence so it was her kill not Jon's

Am I the only one who thinks that Rickon's death could've been more impactful, if he had said more than two words in the last seasons? Not saying that Jon's involvement in his death wasn't impactful or dramatic enough, but I personally only gave a shit about Rickon because he was a Stark. For me Rickon's character wasn't as fleshed out as a Robb or a Cat Stark.

4:08 you missed something, though. It's even BETTER than that! Ramsey fires one, it lands yards away from Rickon. He fires the second arrow, *but we don't see it land* we just see him loading a third arrow. Since the established pattern of cuts was basically *Ramsey fires, Rickon running, miss, Ramsey loads another arrow* when the pattern repeats with Ramsey fires, Rickon runs, Jon getting closer, and cuts back to Ramsey loading another arrow we assumed it missed and is another repeat of the pattern, just not showing the arrow land. BUT WE DO SEE IT LAND! The music swells and he fires the third arrow, then THE *SECOND* arrow lands by Rickon's leg. We assume it's the third arrow because of the cut pattern and the musical cue. The tension is lessened because it didn't show Ramsey loading a fourth arrow so we think Rickon's in the clear. *BUT THE THIRD ARROW* was fired and thus still in the air before the second arrow landed. That *third arrow* then hits Rickon's back, seemingly coming out of nowhere but actually established in the shot if you were keeping count. They didn't break the rule by adding a fourth arrow, they broke the rule by *breaking the presumed* pattern of fire, miss, fire, miss, fire... kill. Instead: Fire, miss, fire, *FIRE*, miss... kill. *UUUUUH SO GOOD!*
@billyjackson00
@billyjackson00 8 лет назад
That would have certainly been an interesting way to do it, however, there are actually 4 arrows. The problem is that Sapochnik doesn't dedicate a closeup to the second one missing. You can see the misses at 1:51 2:06 and 2:32. The problem one is at 2:06 - unless you're watching it on a bigscreen TV, it's hard to see. At 2:40, the 4th arrow hits. But either way, you've got the right idea. Sapochnik is mucking about with the way our mind perceives patterns :)

Could've also made sense because the time for the arrow to land was increasing as Rickon got further away, meaning the second arrow would've taken much longer than the first and so on with the fourth. It was a cool thought
@mykon8172
@mykon8172 6 лет назад
I would have liked your idea if that wouldn't mean a ridiciolously long airborne time of the third arrow, even one and two were extended for cinematic reasons but in a very well acceptable duration, but an arrow that has the power to kill can go anywhere between 200 to 360 km/h. If the third arrow would have been flying for that long, it would have felt like the never ending airplane in airplane action movies, or the never ending runway in The Fast & Furious 365 (or something). However, what I like about that scene so much, which is not mentioned, is that it serves a purpose, beside just "entertaining" / thrilling the audience: The misses aren't just accidental misses. While on the first arrow, you may think Ramsay missed, a second miss and a third miss would feel cheesy and cliché and unfitting for his character, when you remember how he killed 4 or 5 man in a matter of seconds with his bow when he "saved" Theon from being raped. So the way this is combined in a way that stays truthful to the naritive and character, is that he uses the misses to lure Jon Snow onto the battlefield, to eliminate his strategical power. And Sapochnik makes that very clear by the amused, playful look Ramsay has on his face when firing the second arrow, making clear, hey, he is not even trying, which then leads the watchers to think "Why?", which is a brilliant way of showing them his intentions and strategic genius without any words. So Sapochnik is doing three things here at the same time, building tension, developing the story of the battle, and communicating information about Ramsay's strategical sovereignty, without the use of any words.

It is a great scene and I always hear a lot of blow back from people when talking about these scene why didn't Rickon zig zag. Like Sansa said to Jon early Rickon was already dead. I feel like Ramsey would have had all his soldiers fire at once and smother the battlefield killing Rickon anyway if he got to far out of range. You do make a great point how long it takes for the arrows to land.

The scene where Jon beats Ramsay to the brink of death, then we get a shot of Sansa, followed later by him being fed to the hounds was truly the greatest cinematic sequence I have ever experienced. I sat and watched and yelled at the TV as if I could feel the catharsis Jon was feeling myself. All of the horror Sansa had endured came immediately back to mind as soon as she came into frame. And finally as Sansa feeds Ramsay to the hounds the goosebumps hit an all time high. I don't think I had have ever felt more relief from a scene as i did from that one.

Bad news to everyone who hasn't heard already.. The director of episodes nine and ten this season isn't going to direct any of the episodes next season.. The North will remembers how we all loved his work this season and in season 5 "Hardhome", here's hoping D&D remember too and take him back for S8, for there is no better man to direct the finale.

FYI, he won the Best Director Emmy for this episode, so well deserved. He is The Thrones Whisperer. GoT often seems more like a short movie than a TV show, but this episode takes it to another level. It really seems much more like an hour from a big budget blockbuster movie. Just like this video shows, so many of the scenes compare with scenes from HUGE movies, and are right there with them in quality and impact. If this is true, and he won't be involved in season 7, I hope it's because he's working on another project or something, and that he'll return for season 8. He somehow brings an additional element to the show that is so valuable and distinct, Idk if I trust anyone else with the finale or the key episodes leading up to it.

I was vaguely worried when the director list came out, but now that the plot synopses and major events are known I'm a lot more worried. I know you can't just look at the raw plot and say whether the final result will be good or bad, but combined with directors who have such awful track records on the show, I'm really not expecting great things out of next season

+Robo Warrior Warning, possible spoilers for Season 8: GOOD NEWS!! D&D are entrusting the final season to GOT's finest directors: David Nutter (the director of "Rains of Castamere", "Mhysa" and "The Dance of Dragons") and Miguel Sapochnik (the guy responsible for "Hardhome", "Battle of the Bastards" and "The winds of winter"). They have actually saved the best for last! Hooray 😃!

The part where Jon is getting buried under people and suffocating and the camera is cutting crazy fast and being regularly covered with bodies actually gave me a moment of panic where I suddenly felt cold, shaky and I could suddenly feel my heart beating in my chest. It's like I suddenly aware of my own mortality and everyone I know, even though I was just sitting in front of a screen. And when Rickon suddenly takes an arrow to the back my heart just dropped. I felt sick. It's very, very rare to find moments in film that create not just an emotional reaction, but a physical reaction to those emotions.

I personally read Jon's sparing of Ramsay as saying like "No, I'm not like him, and I won't kill in front of my sister." Which then contrasts Sansa's brutal slaying of Ramsay as showing he has become a part of her. But then D&D totally just said in the Inside Episode featurette that CineFix was right and now I feel stupid and the scene doesn't hold as much dramatic weight. Still, fantastic breakdown!
@GamingAdept
@GamingAdept 8 лет назад
You shouldn't really feel stupid. I read it the same way and only thought about it the other when Sansa killed him. The directors could have done more to imply that it wasn't Jon's victory by simply telling Sansa to look angry or vengeful at Ramsey, then shifting her eyes onto Jon just before the reverse shot. Simple things make a big difference.

Matt Cotter There's quite a few moments like this, Rickon's death being one. The suspense and build up they create is fantastic but then they spoil it by showing the death itself in such a plain and boring way. Just close ups. I think if they showed the 3rd arrow missing and then cut to a shot of Rickon running, and an out of focus Ramsey in the backround lowering his bow, then the arrow hitting him, all in the same shot, it would work better. I feel like with this show there is two extremes: either it's the best show in the world, or the worst. In my opinion neither of these are true. I think GOT is a great show that could be better

I though they improved a bit regarding the Greyjoys, but then Yara agrees to stop raiding for nothing when the ironborn cannot grow enough food for themselves or for cattles, and are mostly warriors to get these ressources. The scene that resonates most with me is the moment Jon Snow realizes he fell right into Ramsays trap. It's not just the visuals but how Ramin Djawadi tied the score in perfectly. The scores tempo drops off and the viewer is met with that quiet ethereal music reminiscent of the tail end of LOTR's "Bridge Of Khaza dum". The viewer sees Jon nod his head as he realize his fate is sealed then we get the wide shot of Ramsay's cavalry charging towards Jon. At the EXACT moment he draws his sword the score gives us a single dramatic drum beat to put emphasis on Jon's situation. He. is. about. to. die... Again. He shows no fear and he doesn't even look back to his troops for help. He tosses his scabbard because he has realized that he won't need it anymore. He gets in a fighting stance with his sword and squares off with a 1000+ guys as if to say "I'm taking at least ONE of you fuckers out". Then BAM! Stark troops meet bolton troops. This is without a doubt one of the best scenes I have watched in any cinematic experience.
