7 years ago when I was a kid I got a Venus fly trap it was my very first plant I have ever had and I didn’t really know much about plants to begin with so I had my mom help and that plant died faster than I thought a plant could die lol we put it in miracle gro so I got another one tried again and learned the right care I still have my 7 year old sarracenia and Venus fly trap today it’s no longer just one plant it’s 100s of plants! great care video and as always happy growing!
My memories are similar. Although, I was a little older. 15 or 16. I even remember my mom trying to help me but neither of us had a clue. We have access to so much info now, probably even too much at times. It's much easier to learn care than back then.
I bought a Zero Water filtration system and test the water regularly before watering. I have hard water testing the water from the tap. The meter reads between 165-185 ppm. I put my water through the Zero Water Filtration, and the TDS meter reads at zero. My plants are alive and waiting for temperatures to rise so I can leave them out overnight. The temps are not stable yet here. Also, buying distilled water from the box store is getting pricey. Going with the Zero Water filtration system was a no-brainer to save money.
I could not agree more. For collections more than a plant or two, buying distilled water just doesn't make sense. It's hard to find and almost 1.50 a gallon now. The zero pitcher is a no brainer for me too!
I have the tiny, with a small egg casing, egg carrying roaches, at night in this, 11 story apartment Complex, I wonder if fly Traps would eat, a live roach, crawls inside, flower, ? Will fly traps, eat a live U. S. Southern roaches, ? Will this. Plant. Eat live Roaches. People ? Some body. Knows ? let me, know, if a small roach, crawls in plant, will it eat it ?
Been watching your videos for a few months and following your uploads and I want to let you know this is probably the best Carnivorous Plant care channel on RU-vid/the internet! About two months ago I started growing varying kinds of drosera and multiple flytraps in a Vivosun tent and Vivosun light(which surprisingly works amazing and made my Lowe’s rescue traps turn from light green to a vibrant maroon color) and you’ve helped me out A LOT with little yet very helpful details not many other growers talk about. I live in the southern tip of West Virginia and there’s literally nobody around me that grows these plants that I was able to learn from, so figuring out the specific things I needed to do based on my location was made so much easier thanks to you. The dormancy tips you have in some videos have me better prepared now 😅 I hope you start selling plants soon bc you already have a buyer waiting here buddy!! Keep up the fantastic work 🌱
Wow, Tyler. I can't thank you enough for your kind words. I started this channel to help others learn about and grow these amazing plants. My goal is for every plant lover out there to add a carnivorous plant to their collection. This comment truly means so much to me. You are the exact reason why I continue to make content and share these amazing plants with the world. I honestly can't wait to sell you a plant! Hopefully soon! Appreciate you my friend!
Thank you so much for the great info on how to care for Venus fly traps. I feel like I would be totally lost without this video. I had to laugh because you know exactly what we have done or are doing, because we have no idea what we are doing.
Haha. Thank you for your kind words! I only know what you're doing because it's a road I've well traveled! I'm just happy to have a platform to help people out!
I stopped acclimating them a long time ago. I realized that i was just delaying the inevitable. I realized that the plants acclimate faster by just putting them out in full sun and letting the sun scorch the old growth. The plant will be faster to put out strong growth. I’m actually in the middle of doing this and I’m documenting it on my page. Good info!!!
I've actually lost plants, (usually big box rescues) when I expose them to full sun. Especially if it's during mid summer. I've also had the new growth recover, so I know what yoir saying. However, often times it's these people's first and only plant. I think it's a good idea for them to acclimate instead of just leaving and hoping. I completely understand what you're saying though.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I wonder how much location plays into it. I’m in NC zone 7b. I’m in the process of saving 36 lowes rescues for bat I put in my in ground bog as a foreground plant. Even though it was January and February the original foliage all burned off. I honestly thought I lost them since I transplanted them mid winter but I’ve been slowly seeing the. Reemerge 🤞🏿🤞🏿🤞🏿. I’m actually tracking the batch of 20 so that I can measure how many of them actually recover
I would imagine area is an indicator, but also probably conditions the previous plant was in. The longer it goes without light, the more shocked it will be once exposed. I think there are a lot of factors we can't control which is why I usually lean toward acclimating. You will have to let me know how the 20 rescues go!
I took your advice about ZeroWater pitchers from an older video. Best advice ever. I've had it for almost a year and it still produces 0 ppm water with its original filter.
Yes!! If someone with a small collection asked me if I could only give them 1 tip, the zero water pitcher would be it. Great investment. You can get two filters for 30 bucks. That should last you years more!!
I have my first Venus Flytrap. I'm using distilled water and potting soil I got from a carnivorous plant nursery made of peat moss, perlite, and sand. I am concerned about the amount of light my plant is getting. We live in a very wooded area. The most sun is on our driveway, but I'm worried about excessive heat reflected from the concrete. I have the plant on our back deck where is gets direct sunlight maybe 3-4 hours. Is that enough direct sunlight? Should I invest in an outdoor grow light and, if so, what would you recommend?
Your coleus would also like more light. I'm having the same problem with a couple of mine too right now. The white on the leaves will disappear and more colors will come through with more light.
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub It's the plant in front of the Venus fly trap in the video. They're similar to a Rex begonia. Pretty plants and allegedly low light, but they always seem to need more than you think to really let their colors show.
California carnivores has some good plants brought a B12 from them grew great it’s just now coming out of dormancy already growing huge. I also got a free little baby sundew that decided to sprout up this spring as well so I got a 2 in 1 very healthy plants very good shipping process
Early last week, I found a small VFT at a grocery store. I young one with 1/2" and almost 3/4 inch traps and some tiny ones starting The following day at work, I researched them, and found out why the one I had many years ago died. Then after seeing some large ones in your video from Lowes, I picked up two larger ones like those in your vid. I began giving them an hour a day of sun. I fed each plant a young wasp each. After watching one of your 3yr old videos that did not say what time of year it was, I replanted them in an 8" plastic pot. . They each have a black trap and the little one, a couple whole black leaves. Only the young one seemed to be shocked a bit, even though it was in peat moss, The other two were in sphagnum, I removed all but about an inch of the long moss since I didn't want to tear any roots, being really stuck even though I dipped it in water. It is the first week in September and 90 degrees daily, with fall weather forecast for next week. I now know it's maybe a bit early for their dormancy since they came from California,, but maybe they should do fine? I live in Eastern WA State. I only use distilled and also RO water that has less than 5ppm from the local store. I handled them much more delicately than the guy at "California carnivores" who has been doing this for over 30 years. Prior to rescuing these 3, I ordered a B-52 from Predatory Plants, thinking that maybe after 3 years you had a store, and this might be yours, but maybe not. Then I saw a sale at Sarracenia store, so now I have 5 plants plus a Red Dragon on the way. LIke you, I couldn't pass up rescuing the ones from Lowes.
Love ur vids man and I agree with the light thing at 9:02 u can tell the plant needs light desperately. And if they would leave it outside for a week they’d know it needs more light. When do flytraps usually flower? Mine didn’t flower last year? Should I expect them to flower this year? I’m going to cut it but I’d like to know lol Thxs!
They usually flower in spring. A flytrap that's struggling might flower at strange times though. They will flower if they think they are dying. Their last attempt to carry on the family name before they croak. Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate them so much!!
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub thanks a lot legit after this I started to see a flower forming! For better and more aggressive growth you would recommend cutting it right? I want to really grow it big this year so I’m thinking of cutting it. Also since you have seedlings growing I’d recommend doing a test seeing if cutting it actually grows faster. Like one you cut every year one you cut every other year and one you never cut would be cool to see! Also just a bunch of tests like fertilizers and stuff would be awesome to see Thxs again!
I use cocopeat and pearlite. Water running through that stays the same as my rain water at 6ppm. I pop a couple small pieces of activated charcoal in the water tray to help prevent impurities building up. They all get rinsed through weekly. I used grow lights. They get 16 hours a day.
Oh and I’m in Arizona growing a sundew and Venus flytrap. My advice for the 115 summer dry heat. Little to no afternoon sun is needed. 3-5pm is when it gets hottest here and at that point the plant is just cooking from my experience. I got a Walmart Venus fly trap to live for 3 years before I started buying from actual growers and every summer the 3pm-5:30pm sun just cooks them
We just got our first vft from California Carnivores! We've watched their videos and yours, and we're hoping we can do a good job with them! Every video you post is very informative and straightforward. Thank you! Wish us luck!
Hahaha. Knowing you, yes... This is a good thing. Although, what would all the nurseries do if you bought retail? Lol. I'm sure they all appreciate you not living close to big box.
I would love a free printable plant tracker/venus care sheet. I got two for my kids and they died from the sun so I got two more better ones but need help
@@CarnivorousPlantsHub if you don’t mind I have a question my parents gifted me a Venus flytrap and I been worrying if they can be over feed it’s s pretty small plant about 6-7 traps
The Zerowater is good in the beginning but into6 months the filter suddenly degrade to 150 ppm. It's not filtering more even filtering 2 times the same water (I have 245ppm here). I find that I will rely on rain water and using the ppm tester now
Yes, the filters do not last forever. You can buy replacement filters. If I had u limited rainwater, I'd go that route but I don't. Which reminds me, I need to upgrade my rain collection system! You can get two filters for about 30 bucks, I get over 40 gallons from each filter, so the cost compare to buying distilled water is much reduced. That's 80 gallons for $30. That's about .38 cents a gallon, I can live with that!
Most well water is actually higher in minerals and other adulterants than most city tap water (though, as always, there are exceptions). Unless, of course, your city water is sourced from wells, in which case, there’s no difference. In many wells, there are also contaminants from agricultural chemicals, industrial pollution, or even sewage. Unless you’ve tested your well water, you just don’t know.
If it's enriched with fertilizer, you need to repot. Rinsing it won't be enough. You would have to rinse it a lot... I'd recommend just repotting. I will be selling my soil shortly! Hopefully in the next couple weeks!
I bought one last weekend. Moved it from the death box to a small plastic pot with sphagnum moss. I let it outside for an hour and it went full limp. I checked the rhizome, looks healthy still. Is it a total loss or should I be patient and keep the moss damp?
Venus flytraps can suffer from repotting shock. It's not uncommon for the older existing traps to fall over limp after repotting. I wouldn't worry too much. Watch for growth turning black rapidly. As long as the new growth coming up seems healthy, you should be okay and it should make a full recovery!
9.5 Inch Self Watering Planter Pot, Plastic Self Watering Flare Flower Pot with Water Reservoir, Deep Planter Pot Container for Garden Indoor Plants Home Decoration, Brown are these good for venus fly trap?
I have a question… i grow a lot of plants and i repotted most of them recently but I wanted to know, can you re use the old soil or what can you do with old soil
I don't. I put it at the bottom of my wives planter boxes in Spring. The old soil could have bacteria, mold/mildew and even unwanted critters. I always recommend changing out substrate when repotting.
Almost impulse bought then started having concerns about lighting, whats an ideal lighting situation/setup to allow the trap to flourish in an apartment? Didn’t see a video on this but found all your other videos super informative!
Crushed glass in the substrate? Are you using that in place of washed sand? I was wondering where I could get some sand for my substrates but the thought of having to wash it just make me look the other way
Yes! Coarse crushed glass. It works really well and basically is sand, but looks nice. I painstakingly rinse the perlite, peat moss and glass to ensure all chemicals and minerals are removed. I'm going to be selling my soil blend soon, it will be 100% pre rinsed and ready to use!
Hi, I bought my first VFT a week ago. I live on an apartment with north and west facing windows. I've been keeping my little plant on my window sill in my west window. Should I still buy a special lamp for my plant? Will it be OK in the west facing window? I live in Western Canada on the Prairies, it gets pretty cold here but it's spring here now.
It's unlikely that a west facing window will provide enough light. I'd recommend a good grow light on a timer. Let it have like 5 hours a night after the sun stops shining through the window. It's a slow death and hard to really see at first. But, low light will eventually kill them over the long term.
Thank you my friend, I really appreciate that. I want all new growers to have the best experience so they start entire carnivorous pant collections. Really appreciate you recommending my videos!!
