If it works do a video growing vft's indoors all year around. I read that you can keep them under lighting indoors all year around as long as you keep feeding the plant & keeping consistency with temps.

Your videos gave me the knowledge to successfully propagated my VFTs from cut stalks! I have so many now. I need to start reducing humidity. Wish I could send you pictures

You might not want to plant flower stalks more than 1/2" deep since you'll get plants burried too far below the soil line to grow properly. I've noticed that the baby plants will strike anywhere the stalk is dark. and you can leverage that behavior to give them the best start. I also strongly prefer the vertical planting approach over horizontal since you have more control on where the plants strike and it's a more efficient use of space. One thing I consistently struggle with every year is a grey fungus that shows up a couple weeks into the process. Not sure if you have the same problem but I'd be interested in hearing how to handle fungal control.

I've never had success with VFT stalk propagation in soil. Depth and orientation haven't changed the outcome of rot. I have accidentally succeeded to propagate VFTs with false vivipary by allowing dormancy-free mature plants to grow monster stalks in spring. On the other hand, I have unending success with sundew propagation from both leaf, stem, and stalk cuttings left under grow lights or sun in small distilled water containers. I'm curious to see if VFTs will work just as well. Either way, I've been taking your advice for a couple years now. Many thanks.

Right on! Not sure which method you are using but try giving them more humidity. This gives the flower stalk longer life and allows it longer to start growing from a node. Thank you for supporting the channel!

I have three flytraps that are over two years old. Purchased as gimmick "pets" for Halloween. I keep each one in a one gallon aquarium. None of them have ever gone dormant. They bloom almost every three weeks. Which I usually cut after they reach 2" tall. All three are thriving on a diet of isopods. Which I feed about every two weeks. One isopod to a plant. Also, I water with tap water usually aged for two days. The light source is a full spectrum LED reptile/fish light that's kept eight inches above the tanks. I have no idea what I'm doing, just winging it but it seems to be working. They've tripled their original size. I do worry about them not going dormant? I have tried lowering the temps and lighting to simulate winter but they just keep growing. Thank you for the tips on propagating. I have tried the lazy man's method but the stalks either break down or turn black.

I’ve heard from a reputable nursery that they will do fine skipping dormancy for a few years (3-4) but then will suddenly die. You can find videos on here about using the fridge to induce dormancy. I would definitely look into that because everyone says they have to go through dormancy and it sounds like you care about them a lot and wouldn’t want them to suddenly die. Also, your tap water is probably not safe for long periods unless you live in an area with almost no minerals in the water. Even if there are minimal in your water it will build up in the soil over time. I use distilled water and rain water only.
@janstewart2041
@janstewart2041 Месяц назад
Also they’ll divide before they die
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Месяц назад
The more I dig into this topic the more I agree with Jan. I don't think the mother plant is the one that lives when skipping dormancy, I think it divides and the new plant lives. No one I've ever seen or talked to has been able to provide a shred of evidence that a flytrap will outlive no dormancy. I'd recommend it, but a lot of people swear they never do. The problem is, the people swearing only ever have anecdotal evidence and nothing ever concrete.

I've cut off some of the flower stalks from my VFTs that seemed to be doing a bit more poorly. Definitely went lazy method and just stuck them in the soil next to the main plants. I don't expect much to come of them but they're still green. Could you do a video on manually pollenating VFTs? I have a few different types and I wouldn't mind getting some seeds.

I have my plants in sphagnum moss. Do you think that the plants would thrive more in a substrate like yours? Also, what depth of pot do you recommend? Thanks.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Месяц назад
For propagation or for adult flytraps? Sohagnum moss is a great substrate. My biggest con is it dries out too quickly. If you are on top of watering, it's a great option!

In this video you mentioned you plan to top water the cuttings monthly. Is this the only watering method you are using for these, and are you really only going to have to provide water ONCE a month? Would you recommend having a small amount of water in the tray, or would the closed lid + humidity provide enough moisture to keep the soil moist for a whole month until your next top watering?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Месяц назад
No, definitely not. In the video I talk specifically about watering. While propagating, the tray is always full. I never let these dry out at all. Always extra water. I only top water once a month to help settle the soil around the cuttings.

Question. One of your competitors claims that by using a "Fungicide" diluted in water (one teaspoon/gal) , you will increase the growing power of your fly Trap. The solution is supposed to deter root rot and other like fungus. My Walmart plants are still alive. However living in the Pacific NW you know it's Mid June and the sun was out for 30 mins yesterday. I attribute my plants slow growth to that instead of fungus's. Your thoughts. Thanks
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Месяц назад
First off, I don't look at others on the platform as competitors. I watch and learn other people's content all the time! I always get excited when I see new content from my peers. I'm always rooting for them. We are all here trying to create awareness around this amazing hobby. With that out of the way, I know that there are safe fungicide, many use them to combat mold and mildew. I've not heard of mixing it in water and not sure how the roots will respond long term. It's something I might try but it's not something I have tried. I honestly can't 100% comment on its effectiveness. I do doubt however that it promotes good growth, but it might promote good conditions which helps with good growth. I'm just always nervous exposing the sensitive roots to anything.

@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub Месяц назад
There are many possibilities. It's always hard to diagnose without knowing exactly conditions and photos. It could be pests, too much water, too little water, mineral burns from the wrong kind of water. There is a laundry list of things.

Oh no! Depending on thr age and size of the plant, it can put out multiple flowers but they usually grow at the same time. You'll likely have to wait until after dormancy.

They usually only flower in the spring. If they flower later in the season it can be a bad sign.
