It's said that owners sometimes start to look like their pets. Still trying to decide who has the better stache.

I couldn't begin to imagine any of my knowledge when it comes to canoeing comes close to matching what you guys know but having paddled with my old dog for 11 years and now my new pup who is almost 2 I've learned a couple things. I always have my dog infront of me so I can correct any unwanted behavior and make sure he's not putting the canoe off balance. I also have a rule where he either sits or lays down, easier said then done but having your dog right infront makes it easier. I also use an old therm-o-rest pad for him to lay on. I started using one with my old pooch because he loved to swim and this way with the egg carton texture helped separate the water that accumulates in the bottom of the canoe and him, you can also use it to kneel on too! Hope some of these tips help because once you start paddling with a pup and the more they get used to it, hard to imagine doing any trip without them.

Some really good tips! I always found it useful as well to have a good run or ball/stick session before going in the boat, tires them out a little. lol :) :)

Ah dang!! Boreal put his paw out once, tempting to go after a deadhead in the water, but thankfully restrained himself. He's not ready to join me in the canoe for fishing yet, I could see the very same thing happening. But with time, training and patience, I'm sure he'll settle down. Cheers!

Gus my dog is just two had him out last year as well for a two week trip acts like a cat with a ball on the string if you catch him off guard while fishing jumped in after a big smallie last year only other time fishing was really a problem lots of treats and one of those foam pads forgot the pad this year in the canoe for him seems to help in the canoe bit more stuff to bring but seems make him calmer and uses it to lay around camp helps with bugs a bit to. Love the videos

I had a boxer/beagle mix that would go canoing with me. She would either sit or she'd lay down opposite side of the canoe tilt like she was balance out the canoe. She figured that out all by herself. She was a good dog. 🐕

Once took a trip down to Tim L in Algonquin with my 15 ft bob special and gfs walker and fox hounds . They were ok until we neared a shoreline and they bolted out of the canoe. No way to follow them over the marshy shoreline. Came back shortly when we threatened to leave them. Every dog needs to follow a learning curve. Looked like a great trip in any case .
@ExploreTheBackcountry
@ExploreTheBackcountry Год назад
Ah! He looked pretty intent on jumping out a few times to investigate a few dead heads in the water but thankfully restrained himself. I was thinking we could have a similar situation on our hands. Smart pups figure it out pretty quick, but you're absolutely spot on, there is a learning curve every dog needs to follow.

Awesome! We need to take our hyper active schnauzer on a canoe trip as well! One thing I'd say, as my personal preference. I love to hear the sounds of nature, water, insects, wind, indistinct conversation, in fact anything anything that is real... even the silence is so much better than the background music. There is nothing wrong with your music choices. But for those wilderness park adventures, for me, the music is more annoying and distracting than pleasurable. ... But! It's just a minor quibble and personal annoyance... I might be in minority. Don't stop making your vids! They are splendid. Subscribed! 😀

It took my Jack Russell, Joey, a while to get used to sitting on my lap in my kayak. He eventually got the hang of it and we have been inseparable for 13 years and going strong. Trouble is, he’s getting a little too heavy to fit on my lap these days. 😆 so our trips together have been shorter ones. Having a furry travel companion has been the best! Happy paddling everyone ❤️

@@ExploreTheBackcountry He didn't hesitate to jump in the water either. The German pointer is a little more hyper than the griffon. When I was looking at Boreal, he looked like a Griffon but acted like the Wire Haired Pointer. I'm considering a bird dog. I've ruled out the Griffon. I am thinking English Setter or the Wire Haired Pointer. I have some land in New Brunswick on a river so when I take up residence there, I will purchase a dog for ruff grouse and woodcock hunting.

Congratulations on the new addition, I think it's time for me to get a dog again for trips like this. I was at The Shoals last year but accessed it from Healey and absolutely loved it there and looking at doing again. I've called Ontario Parks with no information and the Park Superintendent but no reply regarding accessing it from Pairie Bee Lake Rd if a fee is required. Any info would greatly be appreciated.

There is a fee station at the Prarrie Bee Lake Access point. Follow the access road from the large Prarrie Bee Ontario Parks sign off 101. Bring cash or cheque and fill out the required forms. It's not staffed, but parks does make random visits from time to time and I did see ticketed vehicles there a few years back when we last paddled it.
