DE LA RIVA Guard is a great guard to control you opponents legs ( but not to hold and rest)
On This Video i help you build 3 attacks from de la Riva guard, the first one you sweep to each side, the second attack you can land right on the Armbar and the last attack you can take the back.
Use the DE LA RIVA guard to transition to somewhere, like these 3 variations and many more so this way you don't lose it just by holding.

Most white belts I know are still trying to understand the basics. When de la riva has been taught at our school, most of the people who understand it are more experienced blue belts or above.

I'm a white belt and all I aim for is De La Riva and X guard. I pull this ones literally every session, especially the back taking.

yea - a little advanced for whites imo. Whites need to learn a basic sweep to the front, a basic sweep to the back, and how to triangle someone. thats plenty

Then you aren't looking hard enough. I'm a one stripe white belt, and I can set a DLR guard with some success. It's not always pretty, and it's no where near as smooth as this, but I can make it effective, especially against other white belts. I always laugh at comments like this that make some of these open guards seem like rocket surgery. Sure, it takes years to master them, but it doesn't take much to get the basics down.
