Dr Glenn McConell chats with Professor Bret Goodpaster from Advent Health in Florida, USA on exercise and aging. Bret has undertaken ground breaking work on the factors contributing to insulin resistance and aging and the role of exercise to overcome insulin resistance and slow aging. We discuss these aspects with a focus on skeletal muscle. Bret points out that physiological reserve can become critically low with age and that exercise builds a buffer so that activities of everyday living can be continued well into old age.
