For most of our history, the human population grew slowly. Until new discoveries brought us more food and made us live longer. In just a hundred years the human population quadrupled.
This led to apocalyptic visions of an overcrowded earth. But the population growth rate actually peaked in the 1960s. Since then, fertility rates have crashed as countries industrialize and develop. World population is now expected to balance out at around 11 billion by the end of the century.
But the big picture conceals the details.
Let us look at one region in particular:
Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2019 it was home to a billion people living in 46 countries. Although its growth rate has slowed down in the last few decades, it is still much higher than in the rest of the world.
While some projections expect around 2.6 billion people others reckon with up to 5 billion by 2100.
Such growth would be a huge challenge for any society. But Sub-Saharan Africa is also the poorest region on earth.
So is Sub-Saharan Africa doomed? And why do the projections vary by 2.4 billion people?

I would really like to know, how we can really help sub saharan Africa. I heard that donating food or cloth do more harm than good, because they only cure the symptoms. I think we have to help Africa building a strong econemy. That said, we should not force african states into free trade agreements. I live in europe and I know that our agriculture is being subventioned very agressivly. Products like milk are then being importet from europe because the milk from african farmers just can't compete.

Seriously. Why are we making videos like this? This topic was a nightmare. How do you talk about a continent as diverse as Africa, to explain larger trends? Not only is there a wide variety of sources, experts disagree with each other on what they can predict about the future. So the time we took to rewrite this script over and over was insane. Still, there is no chance this video won’t make people angry, on all sides of this issue. Some may not agree with the conclusions we have come to. Some will think there are other aspects we could and should have mentioned. Or lament that we generalized too much. But we had to generalize or this video would just have become a hour-long documentary. And we think the topic is too important to not discuss it. So we read a lot and talked too many experts with very different opinions and interpretations. Also we tried to prepare our sources in a way that walks you through our thought process and helps you to make up your own mind. This video was sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of a Grant. They did not take part in the production of the video though. Coming from South Korea here, this video has a very legitimate point in my family history. My grandfather had 6 siblings, and 3 of them died before reaching adulthood. My father has 2 siblings, all of whom are alive and with children today. I am an only child, and I seem to be alive right now. Education wise, My grandfather finished only middle school, even though he was the eldest son and got more resources(none of his siblings received any education). My dad went to college, and now I am aiming for a degree. My, how times change.

Korea got colonized, exploited and culturally suppressed. Shortly after getting independent it had a big war which destroyed the country even more. In the 1950s it was one of the poorest countries in the world. And the big share of industry was in the socialist north. Also the country had no natural resources. So it relied mostly on smart decision making and they turned from one of the poorest countries to one of the richest and is a leading nation in technology. Africa on the other hand had a lot of intact infrastructure of it's colonial era and is extremely rich on resources. Yet they did make hardly any progress. Africa replaced it colonial exploiters by domestic exploiters and people willingly buy into the story that today's misery is exclusively caused in it's colonial era. I wish Africa all the best and I think there are many people great people living there. But Africa needs to start taking responsibility for itself. Korea did from a worse position and it paid off.
@hyunsungjung4941
@hyunsungjung4941 3 года назад
@@jellyorwhat3343 Thank you for highlighting our nation's recent history and development(I mean, I'm quite impressed)! As for African dictatorship's case, I think your opinion that African nations themselves have to start developing instead of blaming others is valid, but I also think it only tells half of the story(no offense!). I actually believe that it's the resources themselves that is hindering African development. Most (I'm severely generalizing here) African dictators sell their resources to foreign nations and use that revenue to keep the army loyal without any need for citizen involvement. That's why they dont have the incentive to educate, house, and develop their poor population. Korea, on the other hand, also suffered under a ruthless dictatorship, yet because we didn't have much resources to sell, our dictators were forced to educate, house, and develop the people in order to maintain a strong and loyal standing army(which was especially neccesary because of the North). It also helped that we didn't suffer any civil conflict after 1953, since our population was mostly ethnically homogenous. African statess, on the other hand, was mostly composed of many different nations who were often at odds with each other, who were forced into the same boundaries by European colonizers. The resulting near-constant state of civil war was a disaster for an already impoverished region. So if I were to blame anyone, it would be the African dictators who don't give a shit about their people, and the European powers also had a role to play. Emmanuel Macron's apology to Algeria was definitely a step in the right direction.

The people who have found themselves "offended" by this video have rarely seen what grinding poverty looks like. Their textbook understanding leads them to believe that the people are simply not ready for education or contraception which is utterly ridiculous as the sole reason why some families in India have fewer kids per generation than others is education. When the women are more educated they value each child more dearly as they know that their child needs to have good education to move forward in life. When that education does not reach the poorest people, they fare worse every time. Its better to have fewer but highly educated children than lots of under-educated ones but until you give that knowledge to those families and those women, this will simply and unfortunately never change.

The more educated a woman is the less children she is going to have, this is a fact. Male education does nothing to drop the population rates.

In today's society, people love bit-sized content more over lengthier ones cuz of lack of time. ergo the loner the clip, the less will be willing to watch who would otherwise might have tuned in. Of course you don't, you don't have time for that, but you do have time to shit on the content, way easier. Problem is you guys are so proud to be contrarian to catch the attention of useless youtube replies, that you don't even bother to actually have arguments against what the videos expose. You just have this umbrella of protection against anything that is said, because of course Occam's razor says that it's more plausible that the video makers are manipulating you psychologically than actually being open about what is discussed and provide the information that sustains the content of the videos. But ok, you guys keep doing that if that's what makes you happy, no amount of text will change your minds, but I just fucking wish that more of these contrarian comments could at least provide solid arguments, otherwise they're pointless and stingy at best.

The most important obstacle in underdeveloped countries is government corruption. There's no goodwill towards citizens from government even when there's literally no cost to change things for better. Some people just like to make a profit out of misery of their own citizens. That's sad true.

I live in Ethiopia and I was actually discussing a tough housing project with my partner little before watching this video. Over the months, we architecture students have gotten to the point of fighting when talking about how to make houses for the poorest slum dwellers in the city. THERE'S JUST SO MANY PEOPLE. And they just keep increasing, not just by natural birth but also by rural to urban migration from the 80% rural population. I took part in the T2D rural to urban migration project and found that what exists is not just a housing problem. I participated in an AU youth conference and found that it's not just a social/tribal/ethnic issue at hand either. The fear, stubbornness, and selfishness that aggravates everything on every level of this society are not unique to this part of the world. But it manifested itself on an intense level here. So, thank you Kurzgesagt for even beginning to tackle a problem that feels like it's taken the form of an unbudging monster. Don't be afraid to state the problems and factors that I know you found in your research when it comes to the Sub-Saharan context. I'll go back to work on my assignment with an extra burst of energy, I think. You can see my channel for the videos I make about the reality I take part in for now and subscribe to follow up on that.

@R In post war eastern Germany we built such blocks with preproduced concrete parts to house all the people of the destroyed cities. They didn't look very nice but did their job. In fact these flats were pretty popular since they already had district heating which wasn't all that common in that time. Agreed, the topic is very complex so that short video was really awesome for what it could tell. But I wish I could learn more on what allows the pattern of corrupt leaders and warlords consistently coming into power around Africa. A lot of countries around the world have had their fair share of absurdly corrupt and even outright evil leaders but somehow in the recent century they've proliferated in the continent and they do so much damage to their countries and the people in it. They sooner or later fall from grace, but then are replaced by others. I'm not an expert but it's plain to see that if this could be remedied, a lot of good will come of it. Of course I won't ask it of Kurzgesagt owing to its controversial nature, but if anyone can share their knowledge and expertise on the matter I would appreciate it. I'm truly curious and I hope I can get some sincere perspective.
