So well explained and excellent video quality. I found this same model in the garbage just yesterday, in excellent condition but no hardshell/cartriage/stylus, perhaps they sold that piece for parts. So not much chance of finding a replacement it seems from your comments below ? thankyou

@gbaudio1212 4 года назад
Well done for saving it from landfill, however, it will be very very difficult to find a headshell. It may be wiser to offer it on ebay or a Hi-Fi forum for spares or repairs as it may be very helpful for someone else and then watch out for a complete one for yourself. If the perspex lid is in good condition, that will be valuable to someone and the motor too and possibly the rubber mat. Good luck.

I see your still replying to comments on a 2 year old vid, outstanding! I have a dual Cs 508 I think the stylus is bent and needs to be replaced in your opinion is it worth putting money into this table or should I pick up an audio Technica LP 60x?
@gbaudio1212
@gbaudio1212 3 года назад
In my opinion, the CS508 is a good deck. Excellent build quality (eg tonearm & bearings) and great sound for the price. I would consider it worth replacing the stylus - or maybe even the whole cartridge if you want to upgrade.

Thank you so much for the video I just have a question, I recently got the exact turntable as in the video, however the stylus definetly needs to be replaced, its a very old DN237. Would I need an adapter or could I just buy something like the Audio Technica that was shown in the video and replace it following these steps?
@gbaudio1212
@gbaudio1212 Год назад
If the stylus needs to be replaced and the cartridge is otherwise fine, then just replace the stylus. Replacements are readily available from hi-fi stores and online. Changing the whole cartridge will be more complicated and much more expensive, even assuming you can still get the headshell adaptor plate.

Sorry, I can't say for sure. Best to check with Grado if the new stylus is compatible with the older cartridge.

Thankyou very much for the kind reply ,upon looking over the machine again I weirdly found the part that has the needle attached to it, it must have been loose in the garbage bag ( that I found the turntable in) and fell to the floor, lucky no one stepped on it. So now i have the darker gray top piece (hardshell or part of the hardhell?) the lower black piece that holds the stylus ( wires attached and has with a niffty mini cover to protect the needle) but not the middle gray part that has the little two bolts with the flat back top. What is that piece called ? is that the cartriage? If so can that be bought? Thankyou

My 505-1 has a blue GT Grado cartridge, i cant find the stylus for it, any suggestions on replacing with a new cartridge with stylus? The Grado stylus for Grado GT phono cartridge - For US sale only 65 dollars, no UK sales?
@gbaudio1212

If you have one of the adaptor plates, then any low mass cartridge with standard bolt spacing will work and it's then just a matter of personal choice which sound you prefer or which suits your system.

Although a lot of CS505's were fitted with AT95E cartridges it really isn't a good match - back in the day the AT105 or AT110E was much better, higher compliance (lower tracking weight, 1.5g similar to the Ortofons the ULM arm was designed around). And it was also shallower, which made it even more so for the CS05-1 with it's 1/2" adaptor - you'll find the AT95E and most other cartridges tip the arm 'tail down', vertical tracking angle and stylus rake won't be right - woolly, bass-heavy sound. Unfortunately AT no longer seem to make any high-compliance MM cartridges at all, the successors to the AT105/110 (even the AT440) have been discontinued.

Yes, the cartridge shown here is an AT95E - stylus number ATN95E. But please check your unit because any choice of cartridge may have been fitted to this deck.

How can i replace the needle from a dual 1257 turntable ?
@gbaudio1212
@gbaudio1212 5 лет назад
Hi Jamie, first you need to identify the cartridge which is on your turntable. That player may have an original Dual low mass cartridge or it or it may have been changed for any standard 1/2" mount cartridge using a Dual cartridge adaptor plate. If you can send us a couple of close-up photos of the cartridge/stylus from different angles, we should be able to advise you.

Hello! First of all, very nice videos, all of them. Second, i just bought a used Dual 505-1. Although it has no stylus yet (I'm gonna buy one), it's general condition is perfect, but i just discovered from this video, that the little screw above the cartridge is missing. Is it a custom Dual screw, or can I use another one that may fit?
@gbaudio1212
@gbaudio1212 6 лет назад
The deck will actually function perfectly well without the screw, however, it is advisable to replace it in order to prevent the headshell from falling off if the finger lift got accidentally pushed back. Any screw with a compatible thread and length will be fine.
@PanosElGatto
@PanosElGatto 6 лет назад
OK, perfect. That was my only question, the screw compatibility. Thank you very much!

Is it possible to replace the whole headshell with one from a 505-4? The plastic tabs on the easily removable part have sheared on mine, and as you said they are pretty hard to find. If I could unscrew the whole assembly from the tonearm and replace it with ones available for 505-4s, maybe it could be done? What do you think?
@gbaudio1212
@gbaudio1212 3 года назад
Sounds like a fiddly job but if your engineering skills are good then maybe it will work. Check the tonearm/headshell geometry in the existing setup to ensure that with the Mk4 headshell, the cartridge can end up in exactly the same position, ie the same distance, lateral angle and height from the arm bearings. If not it will never track correctly. Good luck and let us know how you get on

@gbaudio1212
@gbaudio1212 3 года назад
The CS604 (or CS504) has a different, but still model-specific, Dual headshell mount. If you have the 1/2" mounting plate adaptor, then you can use any choice of cartridge, preferably low mass. Otherwise, I believe that replacement styli are still available for the original Dual cartridge. I may actually have one of these adaptor plates left over from the old days if you're interested.

There is a little black clip attached to the tonearm stand, which holds the tonearm safely in place when not in use. It just flips to the right to release the tonearm.

You can fit any choice of standard 1/2" screw mount cartridge so long as you have Dual's original cartridge mounting adaptor plate, as shown in this video.

@@gbaudio1212 but would the 2m be too heavy for this TT's tonearm?
@gbaudio1212
@gbaudio1212 4 года назад
@@BrianAikens Personally, I would tend towards a low mass cartridge for this low mass arm but the 2M should be OK, at 7.2g that's the same weight as the (now obsolete) AT110E which was a popular choice back in the day.

Where's the part where you remove the headshell?
@gbaudio1212
@gbaudio1212 5 лет назад
I take the headshell off at about 1:00 but you should watch the full video to see the whole process because it's important if you don't want to break the fragile mounts. If you're referring to removing the cartridge from the headshell, I don't do that in this video but it's an easy task - just undo the two nuts and bolts to remove it, after you've removed the headshell assembly from the tonearm.
