Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Eddie Hazel Licks From 1979. The late-great Eddie Hazel of Parliament & Funkadelic fame is a legendary guitarist and as I mentioned in the video - we hit a Funkdelic Chordplay lesson last year, so this time we're taking a look at some of Eddie's fiery licks and fretboard antics.
Eddie's playing style combined a healthy dose of funk and blues elements mixed with a noticeable Jimi Hendrix influence/vibe, which brings all sorts of expressive string bending, intense vibrato movements, hammer-on/pull-off legato excursions, soaring fuzzy feedback, and so much more!
The ideas in this lesson came from a live performance that captures Eddie jamming through an extended version of 'Standing On The Verge Of Gettin' It On' from 1979. The licks shared here include a funky bending phrase, a mutant bending idea that opens with three different bending licks, some funky double-stop moves, a shift bending phrase, and more!
If you're already an Eddie Hazel fan, then you know what's coming in this lesson, but for those that are new to Hazel's playing style and the world of Parliament-Funkadelic, prepare yourself, this music will blow your mind and possibly your speakers if you get carried away - which is very likely with these funk music masters.

Very well done. I was privileged to meet Eddie 4/14/86. He came to our band rehearsal. I stood 10 feet from him while he played Maggot Brain... unbelievable talent. Gigantic hands just like Jimi.

Beautiful strat !! Eddie’s hazel was very distinctive, you can definitely hear him if you listen out for those furious liquid like licks. The way he overbends and hammers off with wild vibrato, it’s almost as if he has a third hand manipulating the guitars whammy bar as he plays blisteringly fast runs with intense groove.

Showing this amazing stuff, where you're playing, how you're getting the tone and explaining notes and fretboard thinking is great. Just discovered Eddie Hazel got to think he influenced a lot of rock players who might not admit it.

Sweet lesson, Dave. If you like Eddie Hazel, then you should like Ernie Isley from the Isley Brothers. I'd enjoy an episode (or two) covering some of his licks from "Voyage to Atlanis", "Summer Breeze", "That Lady", etc. Hendrix played with the Isley Brothers in the early 60's and Ernie Isley learned from him.

Major major props kudos and respect to you for looking into live Eddie stuff and not just most youtube guitar people who only ever examine Maggot Brain. Eddie Hazel had so much more depth to him outside of the beauty of Maggot Brain, and it definitely doesn’t get analyzed nearly as much as it should.

Eddie was Funkadelic, after he left the sound changed. I still bought every Parliament Funkadelic album. But I prefer the first ones when Eddie was playing lead. Mikes ok, but he’s not Eddie. I also liked Ron Bykowski, him and Eddie were killer together. There is a bit of debate as to wether it is Eddie or Ron, playing lead and doing the solo’s on Red Hot Momma and Vital Juices. These licks come from Eddie’s solo from Red Hot Momma live in Landover MD 1979. That video is on RU-vid.✌🏼

Not sure how Brewster has his set, but with a fuzz face style pedal it sounds best going into an already overdriven amp or pedal. Fuzz on 100% volume 50-70% you can use your guitar volume to adjust how much fuzz you want, and don’t forget to send it thru an electric mistress style flanger to get the full Eddie hazel effect!

Could you do a slayer chord play or a 3 for all of Jeff and kerry the 3 for all would be cool since a lot of the solos tend to seem like they are just running scales they had just learned maybe there’s more to them I know they have some solos you could tell where the idea came from like dead skin mask seem like it starts in a mixolydian pattern but when they play live it feels like they just improvise the solos

Yola song Faraway Look vocal line is suppose to change from minor to major or vise versa but you should make a video lesson on rock songs that have vocal lines melodies that switch from minor to major,,, or major to minor to give examples to really learn the major scale and minor scale to stand out and know how to use them. Often guitar solos are just sounds like someone is practicing their scales and I'm just looking at my watch thinking about going home and throwing in a TV dinner in the microwave. So Latenight maybe you can really dive into vocal lines in rock songs that SWITCH from major to minor or from minor to major to really learn how to use the scales good.
