3 Fixes for VR Motion Sickness, of course your mileage may vary: 1- Walking in place (this is what worked for me) 2- FOV settings in game (but only certain games) 3- Natural Locomotion: store.steampowered.com/app/79...
Natural Locomotion was a literal game-changer for me with Skyrim VR. It didn't just help with my motion sickness but also made the game significantly more immersive. Highly recommended.
I am really good friends with one of our neighbors. We're always over their playing the Oculus with them. Tons of Beat Saber. Recieved the Rift S for my bday from my wife (probably moreso because she wanted it lol). Ive been a lifelong gamer, and have played a lot of VR, but for some reason, games like Spacecar, MinecraftVR, and ones like you showed in this video give me motion sickness within minutes. Ive never experienced any type of motion sickness in my lifetime until now. Its weird, and i was actually in denial about it lol, I never get sick!. This was the first video I could find on solving the issue and I really appreciate you taking the time to make it. I havent tried these steps yet but Im going to try them all when I get home today. Sub'd.
Thanks for the advice, good video! Motion sickness is killing me right now on smooth walking games, worst part of it is after I've stopped using VR when the sickness comes on, I stay feeling sick for quite a long time afterwards. Brutal.
I never really had any motion sickness in the first place but I can see how this would be super helpful for beginners! Gratz on hitting over 1k views again, Ben
What helped for me was playing a game With a tweakable vignetting , and as you play push the radius as small as you can stand. Keep repeating this until you can disable this in its entirety. It took me many months to be able to stand "smooth locomotion" but now I "cant" play any game without it. Hope this helps for some one, because the first time I played minecraft VR It made me sick for over 5 hours(I only played 5 minutes) and was scared that VR was not for me . Now I can play Skyrim VR without any vignetting for hours straight :)
I can play SkyrimVR about half an hour until i notice some sickness but im slowly getting better at it. (Got the game only yesterday). MinecraftVR made me so terribly sick Im afraid of ever touching that one again.
Thanks for the tips! Im trying to do my vr legs, atm i can play sairento VR for like 20 minutes. I'm using Biodramine too but only fo training, i mean i dont plan to use pills for playing, only to help the brain training, this helped A LOT. At this rate i think i will be able to use sliding locomotion some day...
There is a setting in open VR which can do some rooms scale locomotion where it locks rotation and allows you to “have an unlimited play space” by just walking and turning at the edge of the space
I felt sick for weeks at first but then I started moving my head to match the camera and it engages your vestibular system in your ears which is responsible for balance and that suddenly made locomotion comfortable for me, it changed everything. Although I still can't tolerate Serious Sam yet, too fast.
I just realised that I was subscribed to way too many youtube channels, so I made a new one. With that one I will only subscribe to youtubers I really wanna get all updates by. So yeah, subscribed
Walking in place should be recognized by a 3D camera, you can even run in place or walking quicker depending on how far you stretch one leg forward (looks like a low kick). They could also implement the recognition for crouching, jumping and even laying down
When I got my VR headset sliding motion felt a bit weird for like 5 minutes. After that I've never really had any problems with motion sickness in any game. After about 3 hours of playing VR I tend to get a little bit of headache but nothing serious. I guess playing a lot of other video games kind of made me used to it. My sister played splatoon 2 once with motion conttrols on the Nintendo switch and had to throw up after half an hour lol
God I remember my first day of VR, I played for a whole day straight when I got it. (BAD IDEA) When I got off i was super dizzy and felt horrible. Didn’t play VR ever again until a year later. Now I can play for days straight with no effect!. (just super sweaty)
That makes me feel better! I bought a VR 2 years ago and returned it the next day because I got so sick. It was so fun and I just tried to power through the sickness. I was sick for 2 days! I wanna revisit now that I know what I know.
I get pretty bad motion sickness when i use full locomotion. Just started playing skyrim a few days ago with just teleportation and stumbled across a horse in the wild, jumped on the horse and started riding while galloping in place IRL and it worked. I know i looked like a total fool but no motion sickness
Hey Randy! finally saved up enough money for vr and had it for two days. How are you getting on with motion sickness now? and what have you tried? whats worked :))
My first vr game was skyrim. I wouldn't be too bad during, but later and the next day would be pretty bad I kept all the sickness aids off and just sort of powered through. Take hour or more breaks, maybe eat something light Now I have no issues
@@PerfectlyNormalBeast I am definitely getting my vr legs now. I do get a bit motion sickness once in a while but nothing like when I first got my valve index. I absolutely love vr! Half life alyx is awesome!
Luckily I am old enough to remember when 3d shooters first came out, and I used to get sick as a dog then, as well. It is something you can work through.
I'm so happy that I did not had any motion sickness at all. I was a little scared before my hmd arrived. Tested it and nothing happened, I was good to go.
Natural Loco worked for me; Its not ideal, but it works pretty good (in Skyrim and Minecraft anyway); after a week or two of that, I didn't need it anymore, but I still use it because I got used to it, and its pretty neat/handy, It also has some neat tricks in the beta track these days, like additional trackers (for Vive here, don't think Oculus can do it), which you put on your feet (say); then as you walk in place, you move in game; this lets you free up your hands from doing the walking motion. In practice, I found my feet-trackers got caught up with the VR cable from the HMD, which got annoying really fast. I think your foot walking in place trick would likely do it, for the same reason NL does - just give your brain some frame of reference .. oh, I'm walking, okay then. Good idea.
I have the same issue with moving/sliding and motion sickness... I can't imagine it's much different than riding a segway except the brain does not have any g force info coming from the inner ear from the forward movement.
I would recommend picking a smooth, stable framerate game and only using smooth locomotion for it and just never switching back to teleportation. That means NOT modded skyrim VR or minecraft vr which is very unstable and can have huge lag spikes. Boneworks is pretty good for this as there's no teleportation. The first few sessions will be nauseating, but eventually you will know what to expect. Just don't play for more than an hour if you're getting a little dizzy, you'll reach the breaking point about an hour and a half in where you're like "GET IT OFF GET THIS HEADSET OFF ME I'M GONNA PUKE ALL OVER THE RUG"
Thank you for this brief and informative video. I want to try a game that uses natural locomotion, as I always thought that would solve the problem but unfortunately I haven't gotten to play much VR. When I did play a game that involved moving with a joystick, luckily I didn't feel sick although it did feel strange, but I kept almost falling over. I was playing a horror game (performing for my friends) that involved exploring a mansion and running from a ghost, so there were times when I really wanted to take corners quickly. I tried using the joystick WHILE walking and turning in RL and boy did I topple over fast! Anyway, at that time what I imagined would work would be to use your left hand to grab the ground and pull yourself along. With the arm swinging thing how would you hold guns...?
Check out Sea-band. They use it to suppress nausea, doesn't matter if it's cause of motion sickness, morning sickness or just sickness. I bought them and they work for me.
Hi, i just got myself an Oculus Rift S , wich is awesome, and this is my first time EVER doing VR... And of course, i got a lot of motion sickness due to games such as BoneWorks etc ... I tried some tips in your videos, and i have to say that those were very effectivs ! and i also put a fan blowing on me , right in front of me , and this has really helped a lot , i was able to play a full hour , without feeling nauseous at all ! Thx for your tips ;)
It's just mindset. While you are smooth walking or turning. Don't pay full attention to the world. This will cause your brain to not try and figure out why it's moving but not moving
great video ... something i noticed that all of this are associated with your brain and how you get used to it. The more you play VR games the more you (brain/body) over come on this issue, and gradually the motion sickness will be gone. I am playing VR games since 3 years now and no more nausea.
Yeah, i can play a lot of VR games and i wont be motion nauseous, but some game do make me motion nauseous. Its games like Pavlov VR that make me motion nauseous. I really hate it and i hope these tips help me so i can play in peace
I luckily never dealt with motion sickness from VR. Sadly my wife does. She can only teleport. My issue is headaches. I get them frequently with VR but they go away in mins when I remove the HMD.
Yikes. Hopefully you’ll be able to build up a tolerance. Give yourself time and if you feel nauseous again take a break and tray again another day. Trying to “power through” in one session doesn’t help. Thankfully many games offer teleportation movement.
4. Blow chunks to relief motion sickness. No need to go to the toilet either, best method for me. Feeling a little nauseous, I just open up and let it out (:
I made the big mistake to play skyrim vr right after I bought the psvr set. Never had on a vr headset before that so I got sick so fast. I will try these steps.
how do you fix nausea when flying in VR? I can't flight!!!! and I tried to play War Thunder, and man it hurts... It does gets better, unfortunately there is no universal solution yet, gonna have to try all those ginger things, and fans etc... actually today wasn't as bad as I thought, first time I managed to play only 5 minutes, did few turns and got sick for the rest of the day... Today I felt slightly sick but not to the point of not being able to continue playing, so played almost an hours until decided its enoough... I have not tried any solutions yet... hopefully it will eventually get better... I bloody enjoy VR but its hard to play when you are slowly getting "sick"...
At the time that I bought the Vive (around 2 years ago?) the touch controllers for the Rift didn't exist yet. So the Vive controllers was a clear winner, back then anyway. :)
Yeah, I think so. I love roomscale VR, being able to walk and move any direction inside the game. The Vive requires just the two lighthouses to make that happen. The Rift (from what I've read) requires 3-4 sensors around your room and each sensor needs usb connection to the PC. In our tiny apartment that would've been a cable nightmare, but the 2 Vive lighthouses are a nice clean setup for us. There's also these coming "soon" for the Vive, which will be a game changer: bit.ly/2K3LBmc
I've already built up a tolerance, but I'm curious if this would help someone new: Reminding yourself that it's not really you in that world. You're just controlling a drone with really good I/O
If you walk in place like in the video and use this driver github.com/pottedmeat7/OpenVR-WalkInPlace/releases it will apply touchpad movement for you. Its configurable to work with the amount of Head movement you choose to have when walking in place, it also supports trackers on your feet to detect and apply steps. Its very similar to natural locomotion it actually came first, however didn't have as widespread adoption, guess the documentation and setup was confusing...
Fortunately I am immune to all motion sickness. Nothing moves me. Of course that proves to be problematic when you want to show off VR to your family. They all react differently to all different games. My brother was the most immune, but my parents fell off almost immediatelly.
Same, but mine is with my PSVR. I didn’t return it, but holy shit did I feel like hell for 4 hours or so. Didn’t even complete the first intro story mission after running from the dragon for a bit.
