This video perfectly demonstrates why I love Oris SO much, that I decided last year to make their Big Crown Pointer Date my first ever (_entry level_) luxury watch purchase. A cool, mid-sized independent with history, recognizable design and charisma. Great video, as always!
@@Konsaliki perfect! That is the model I would go for as well! I think the pointer looks better with the crescent moon like indicator. Congrats to you !
Even though Oris has been around since 1904 they feel like a newer brand on the rise. I picked up a green dial Oris diver 65 on a tropic rubber strap at the start of summer. It's been perfect for going to the pool, boating and that type of thing.
Oris is growing on me. As a brand they have some interesting designs and refreshing movements. Not everything is a success but they step outside the box and they’re independent .
What a great video. Keep up the awesome work man. I love your sense of humor and the not so subtle movie references of our generation. “On your death bed you will receive total consciousness …so I got that going for me”
Oris was my first nice watch (the predecessor to the Aquis back in 2005) and I will always have a real soft spot for them. I love the MOP dial and the cheerful salmon on the ProPilot and can definitely see either of them in my collection.
Just reminds me of the Salmon joke…”Hey Salmon we’ve named a colour after you” “Oh great, silvery beautiful slick right?” “Ahem no….it’s your….” “Wha….omg…”
I’m a huge fan of Oris and I have 2 (so far) in my collection, a 41mm regular ProPilot and a 43.5mm Aquis. My first Oris was the first time I had crossed over into paying four figures for a watch which was and still is a big step for me buying something as unnecessary as a wrist watch. As you touched on in the video a big part of the appeal of Oris is the fact they’re independent. It’s a silly reason to love a watch maker but for whatever reason, it matters to me. The trio you got hands on with are all a little bit too “out there” for me and my ultra boring taste (to borrow a phrase from Henry Ford I like my dials “any colour you like as long as it’s black” 😂) but I love that Oris relentlessly do their own thing. Although I really like the Hölstein Edition Worldtimer 👀 Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these watches with us.
I bought the first full steel in the 90s. The small minute version and it is very solid and balance on the wrist. The small face works because of the super thick interpreted bracelet. Great to see it back.
I love Oris so much! I own a Chronoris Movember and from my watch collection thats the one that gets the most wrist time. I really like how they do "unique" or "quirky" stuff at that price range. Love your content btw!
The Oris Full Steel is freaking awesome! It's weirdly both small and big... the 36.5mm size includes the crown guards so it's around 34.5mm at that flat part before the crown and L2L is 46mm including the flare of the bracelet. The lug width may be 18mm but the bracelet starts at 20mm and tapers to 18mm with a 19mm clasp. It's a watch that's transformed off the bracelet and the shrouded lugs give any strap a unique look. If it's too small for you, Oris has released the caliber 690 in bigger watches (like the ProPilot Worldtimer) and Ulysse Nardin has some contrasting discrete dual time versions (calibers 203, 223 with big date, and 243 with big date + small seconds).
@@YoureTerrific I think they discontinued the Propilot GMT but still sell the Propilot Worldtimer (with the 690). Oris seems to really like calling their "dual time" watches "worldtimers" lol.
Yeah it’s a neat trick that Oris has pulled off. They are the “that guy” of the watch world. Like in a movie, you really don’t remember “that guy” until you see them and then you are so glad they’re in the movie because they make it that much better. I haven’t found and Oris that fits my style either just yet, but I hope to one day. Mean time, I’m glad they exist.
I snagged an Aquis Upcycle a while back and despite trying desperately to love it, the bracelet was refusing to let me. Then I saw one on the rubber strap and that was the clincher. Now awaiting the green strap from the NYH and that will be the winner for me I think. Great review of all three watches, and especially the reference to sea snot.
My first automatic watch I bought in the 90s was the Oris Small Seconds 7496 Stainless Steel Mens Watch. Same design no buttons not crown small seconds complication and heavy as diabetes. Was devastated when my watch collection was stolen a few years ago. This new watch gives me good vibes. But I paid £500 for it but I wouldn’t pay £2750.
I agree with your thoughts on the proprietary lugs on the Aquis. Just… why? I mean their other watches have normal lugs. The Diver 45 is practically the perfect mid-size diver. No, they made a conscious decision to F up the lugs on the Aquis. Great video, thanks!
The ProPilot x is an almost perfect watch, expect for the disappointing dial. It needs applied markers and some more design and attention, the current one is a bit boring (with not too great lume) and not very fitting for the awesome case & movement.
That's why you need to go for the funky colours, similar to the Rolex OP's...the sunburst black and blue are also too boring. @Evan in Germany the salmon one is the top seller.
Yeah, I have that World Timer, bought mine in mid 2000’s it is still my sexy/classy go to watch for dress. I have a very nice aftermarket steel bracelet for it. It is very classy and is not mistaken for anything else.
I've tried on the Pro Pilot X gray dial a few times. Observations: love the bracelet, bezel and clasp. However, the hands look cheap and it's overpriced, imo. Thanks for the reviews, Sir!
I had this problem with the Aquaterra when I tried it on, the hands just looked so thin, stamped and cheap. I couldn’t square them with the rest of the package and so I skipped it. A shame.
yes. Oris will take our money in the future. Just wait until their whole lineup has in house calibers, they will become collectibles in some decades for sure, if they also prove to be reliable. I myself have a cal. 400 green Aquis somewhere on my shortlist
Really enjoy your videos, I just picked up the ProPilot X with the Blue dial. So lightweight and comfortable. Perfect summer watch. Not a fan of the green on the NY Harbor
I'm still contemplating buying my first expensive watch, and Oris has caught my attention from the beginning of my search. They're interesting, holds some reputation and they mange to keep their design unique (as far as I'm aware). However, I'm also a bit stuck on not having found the "perfect match" in their collection. For some reason the Formex essence 39 is still on my list, but I'm also a bit on the fence with that since the brand isn't as widely recognized. Any thoughts on my issue? PS: Once again you made a banger of af review! 👍 @youreterrific
Why do you want a recognizable brand? For resale, to make an impression, to know about their reputation? No wrong answers here. Just might help with your journey.
@@YoureTerrific Recognized might not be the right choice of word here. I certainly don't mind it not being recognizable, I've always been a guy who likes niche stuff (hence the unique design Oris also has) which is actually a major plus for the Formex. By "regocnized" I was mainly thinking in terms of the fact that the amount of costumer feedback on the product is substantially less compared to the more well-known brands. However, I recall you you were quite fond of the Formex when you tried it - maybe I should just stick to my gut :)
Take my opinion with a grain of salt. Buy the watch that makes you smile. Don’t worry what people think or what clout comes with the name. You are the one wearing it and looking at it each and every day. Oris is an amazing brand with absolutely incredible history, plus you can actually buy one new today. My first two watches were marathon msar and Damasko DS30. Only watch nerds know what they are but they make me happy. TL;DR. BE SELFISH, GET WHAT YOU WANT!
@@christianblicherbrader5954 The Formex is a fantastic watch. I am fortunate to have the likes of Grand Seiko, Omega and Tudor in my watch box. It gets regular wear because it brings its own thing to the joy of watches.
@@Not-a-bot222 I 100% agree with you. Wear what you want! However, it still doesn't change the fact that my concern is mainly about reliability and trustworthyness since I feel like it's a solid chunk of money to throw after a "micro brand" although it's a well-established one 🙂
I like Oris as brand. I like their Big Crown models, but Little else. And even the Big Crown models haven’t caused me to buy one. 🤷🏽♂️ I also keep rooting for them. I hope they continue to innovate but I really hope they come up with a design that speaks to my aesthetic.
I'm a big fan of Oris. My favorite watch is my Aquis, wearing it now. I tried on the PPX salmon dial and I really liked it, fit great, but I'm waiting for a green dial and I really hope they *do a SS case. I'm not a fan of grade 2 titanium. Otherwise, amazing watch. BTW oysters are GD amazing. With some good horseradish ooohhhh baby.
The Pro Pilot X made a big booboo by not making a quick micro adjustment on the clasp even though the clasp is very cool! Not to mention the size, movement and colours!
On the “Full Steel”, how do you set a second time zone that is x.5 hours ahead or behind? Sounds like it can only manage dual time when the time difference is a full hour multiple.
I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but the background music in this vid is the same as the theme song used by Xavier on the "Dialicious" channel for his "Petites montres entre amis" series 🙂
Oris is a company I like but want to love. I appreciate their business attitude and conservation efforts. But outside of maybe one of their Pointer Date iterations, the original ProPilot is the only watch I've liked enough to add to my collection. There seems to be at least one deal-breaker (for me) on every model they release.
The ProPilot X is so close to being my perfect watch but the flatness of the printed dial, softness of the titanium, and sloppiness of the bracelet (it's a hair-grabber and can also fold in ways that it doesn't easily unfold from) keep me waiting for the update. Give it applied indices and higher-grade titanium and I'm in.
The thing that irks me about the full steel is the red plus and minus markers on the dial. Unsure why they felt the need to include them. I'm guessing it matches the design of the original, but it just clutters an already super dense dial.
Oris is just not for hipsters that put every watch on NATO lol ;) Sorry for a bad joke! :P Their rubber straps are brilliant and to be honest I can't imagine an Aquis on anything other than the original strap. Changing straps is fun and everything but integration is just a higher level of design and commitment.
I had one of the original ‘full steel’ world timer’s back in the 90’s and I can still remember how weighty it was, alas it is also too small for me these days. Enjoyed seeing it though in another well scripted video. Take care.
Frustratingly my favorite Oris, the one I feel is closest to right for me was the Hodinkee LE, that of course sold out in 20 seconds and is way over cost.
I dont really like any of those three watches. I just like your videos. I do have a question... just bought a bb58 925 (life achievement) and just saw the new pelagos 39... i think i like more the 925, but im always afraid of damaging it... i work as an intensive care doctor, and feel the new 39 pelagos would suit my lifestyle better... any suggestions?
Hey Doc. I have the 925 and do find it a bit soft. I notice how soft it was when changing straps. Great watch, but not sure it would be compatible for your job. Loving the new 39 Pelagos and my unofficial recommendation is the tough titanium Pelegos. Good luck with your decision.
just put a scratch resistant coating over the titanium, if budget microbrands can do it so should oris. citizen even puts a titanium hardened coating on their stainless steel watches because it makes it 5 times more scratch resistant (or something like that), why would anyone make a titanium watch today without it? pulsar or alba and even casio titanium watches get a pass, but in this price range oris shouldn't.
