I got a co-op rev 20 for my son and he loves it! He just turned six and every weekend he wakes me up wanting to hit the trails.

Thanks for wonderful advice. Thanks to you, and me of course, my 6 y/o son now rides the Norco Fluid 2.3. His is the 2021 model and the price increased a bit since this video was made. I think it’s because in 2020 the rear break was mechanical but now both breaks are hydraulic. Anywho.. thanks for making this video for dads like us. Very helpful!

You can also get internally geared mountain bikes in any wheel size, there are also suspension forks being made for wheels as small as 16”

Great review, I feel quality of bike matters to keep riding enjoyable. I learned this when I pony up the cash to buy a nice bike. The Walmart junk just won't cut it and actually deters others who wide with me who use them. Can't tell you how many times I let a freind ride my high end bike and seen them smile. My neighbor came home with a Cannondale hardtail the very next day.

I got my little one the GT stomper too. He loves it and the only problem was the brake pads rubbing the tire, you have to get it exactly right. Other than that he’s a terror on the trails 👍🏻

Kids bikes with disk brakes - absolute revelation for my 5 year old. For the past couple of years we have been trying to get something my daughter can use confidently, trying softer stickier v-brake pads, adjusting Lever positions and spring return rate to no avail. Literally 2 minutes on some cheap used Magura MT2 brakes and the comment was "Dad these are so easy to use i don't need to pull with all my fingers" . The most expensive bit of converting from V-Brake to disk has been wheels, i ended up custom building some as i have the kit to do so but they were not cheap. Here is to hoping the trickle down of decent disk hubs and brakes continues with kids bikes - they have the most to gain from them.

I bought my son that norco and the bike is a lemon. Plastic bash guard broke in the first week. The chain is super loose with crazy chain slap chipping the paint off all over the place and perpetual falls off. I had the crankset replaced and a chainguard added. Still fell off. Fortunately the shop I bought it from refunded me on return. Replaced with an Orbea Laufey. Now that is a kids bike worth owning.

You should do an update to this video. Meaning as for me I like to get out on the trails with my son but unfortunately I was only able to get them a Walmart bike with that being said I would like to do some upgrades to his bike like fork and etc. but it makes it very difficult to find parts for kids bikes and there isn’t much RU-vid videos on doing upgrades to kids bikes as well.

Lil Shredder Prodigy is a bike that can take 16” and 20” wheels - full suspension too! Best bike out there - it has a slightly smaller frame than a normal 20” so for 4-6 year olds it’s perfect.

How were the trigger shifters on the Trek compared to the grip shifter on GT for example? Which one was easier?

Hi. I enjoyed your video. My 8 year old grandson is inexperienced but excited to start trail riding. He just had his first go, and loved it. I want to get something that will last and that he will enjoy and be able to manage. He prefers the grip gears. And I see inventory is hard to find presently! Every top 10 on the internet seems to list different bikes so I am baffled to say the least! Do you have an opinion on GT vs Marin, vs Raleigh vs Cleary? I don't want him to be discouraged by the bike being too heavy or too anything! Obviously I am not looking for a personal rundown on these, just your bottom line, if you think GT is a better choice than the others. I was almost sold on the Marin Bayview...until I found a lot of comments on the internet that the bike is way too heavy! (Also 24" is pushing it maybe, but he is growing so fast I might land there). Any guidance would be appreciated!

This was extremely helpful as we are facing the same dilemma with a 48" tall 5yo who is way beyond his 16" single speed and need gears. One question...is your 5yo long legged? Do you have a rough idea of his inseam measurement? Just trying to figure out if our little man would fit these 20" bikes. Thanks!

Cool bikes.last year I picked up a few bikes for my daughter.1 was a new bmx\mountain bike style manufactured in SC.my bad...got stuck on the USA somewhat local (we live in the Sandhills area of NC)it was a little big for her,heavy,hand breaks ,gears ect were intimidating I supose.went for a retro haha seat purple velvet no less,with new tires & some other stuff.& A trek.light weight frame .for 1980-90 standards.anyhow she tried all of them & seems to really like the trek.I got on it & noticed the crank is bent or maybe a peddle.not sure.the budget is pretty much non existent right no w .for now the simple breaks are what she's comfortable with.wondering if the slight bend in crank can be fixed?or not.thinking ....have her try all the bikes again. ,when she goes back to old faithful,sell others at a more than fair price & out some new parts & paint on the trek.she's 8 growing like a weed & the $ issue is temporary.just need to get a little more out of that bike.we aren't serious trail riders .YET.by this time next year I'd like to buy she & I some good bikes.maybe new maybe a couple that have been in someone's garage that lost out to the video game.just .something fun & comfortable.we are outdoor ppl.no VIDEO game in this house..wasn't my thing as a child & she doesn't seem interested in them either.my bike is decent but tires are shot .freebie from the dump..not bad actually.for now ,I suppose I'll replace the rubber on mine.& Go with it until we get the 2 new ones.don't have to be best of the best but would like to have the option of a long ride .any bikes you could suggest?& The upgrade kit looked good.thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.1st video.I will keep reading and watching .maybe look around on Craigslist.I'm ready to ride with her again.time is flying.thanks.Burke & Mary .Carthage NC

They all pale in comparison to woom bikes. best kids specific bike brand I think with great (re-sell) value, kids specific components and geometry. Best of all, even the first push bike without pedals features a hand brake my 2 year old managed to operate (though not yet master). So bad habits of coaster braking will never be formed. Looking forward to getting him his first pedal bike this year at less than 2 years old! Jeff Kendal-Weed also got one for his little gal, confirming my choice for best kids bike!

When buying for kids, remember the weight difference. 25kg child riding a 12kg "grown up looking suspension MTB" is like a 80kg adult riding a 40kg bike. You try pushing up half your body weight up a hill.
