I’ve started out on the homekit journey. Extremely pleased with Merros smart plugs. And just bought eufy cam 2c 2k system, hope it’s good .. you’ve helped my research.

Must Haves are: Lutron Caseta Dimmer (with bridge), Phillips Hue, August Lock, ecobee thermostat and ihome plug in wall switch. Never Purchase: Leviton dimmers (no bridge) - constantly not responding My Q homebridge for myq smart garage hub - incorrect installation instructions and customer support can't resolve issues. I have approximately 60-70 devices within homekit and have had a love/hate relationship with it from day one. Every 2 months or so I had an issue with something not responding. Upgrading my router to an orbi mesh network and increasing my internet speed has helped. Hoping over time with both apple homekit and manufacturer firmware updates we see reliability get better.

Great video Eric! I STILL haven't gotten one of those Lutron Fan controls. Every morning and evening when I have to get out of bed just to cut the fan on/off I say to myself "I gotta automate this *&$&#* thing!" I love the Lutron Light switches that I have so I definitely need to get me some of these fan switches soon.

Haha I know the feeling! It's easy to see the places in our homes we want to improve. If/when you do get the fan control, I'm sure it will make for great content. 🍿

I have 6 Lifx bulbs (not the day&dusk) and haven't had a single issue with them (they are hardwired to the 2.4Ghz band). Philips HUE is on the no fly list for me for all the phone homing it does.

I’d like to toss an update out there for anyone watching this video- Iv been using the Wemo plugs for about 6 months now (I have 5 or 6) and they’re rock solid. Not sure if there was a firmware update after this review but I’d give them thumbs up all day.

Your opinion on the Wemo's is SPOT ON. I've been using them for a year now and they seam to drop connection about every month, and when one drops the others to follow shortly after. This problem became more frequent when I added more devices. I'm currently using (4) of the 2018 wide outlet switches (1) of the new 2020 outlet switches and (1) wall 2020 wall switch. The wall switches have a "reset button" just below the main switch so there's no need to run to the breaker box, but... yeah what a pain it's been. I have (12) LUTRON switches for the past year and I haven't had any issues. I've ordered Hue outlet switches to replace these problematic WEMO's for good!

I agree with you on the Wemo Mini Light Switches, they are tricky to setup, once setup they work pretty well with HomeKit App but on the pull down menu from your phone they don’t register accurately whether they are on or off. BTW I am running 6 of them.

I have 6 Wemo switches and 5 mini plugs and a motion sensor. They work great, no problems. I wonder if the problem is the WiFi setting? I have all my switches and thermostat on 2.4ghz and use 5ghz for everything else. I love that you can set up rules with wemo to automatically turn lights on and off depending on time of day or if motion is sensed. I don’t use HomeKit, I have Google Home, so maybe it’s a HomeKit problem? “Okay Google, turn on the outside lights,” and they’re on. Love them. Just wish they made outdoor plugs or a three way dimmer.

JJ. You can use the regular Wemo dimmer and use another switch like the philips wireless switch to control the Wemo switch. I have that same setup in my kitchen

I have several Wemo smart plugs. The setup process was a bit odd when they first added HomeKit support but they work great for me. I have several and use them to run basement fans on a schedule, among other things. Conversely, I’ve had MANY problems with iDevices switches from day one. And I have both their inside and outside smart plugs. Also have had problems with iHome smart plugs. Regarding the three way, not sure why you would use a three way switch for a two way circuit. I have some places I’d like to test this on, but haven’t purchased any yet.

Yeah smart plug networking can be hard to make reliable. That's good to hear your Wemo plugs are working well. For my garage switches, I wanted to try out Belkin's latest generation of switches for the channel, and I had an Apple Store gift card burning a hole in my pocket at the time. 😃

Eric Welander I know that feeling all too well. :) if I had one beef with HomeKit devices that was non-functional in nature it would be that they only seem to come in white. Works for my house but not my mom’s. Wish they would have options for ivory/almond/whatever that beige color is called.

The Wemo plugs I have don't like my mesh network. I can be 10 feet away from an Eero unit and it still won't connect. I had to move it to a different spot (less desirable) to get it to work. I have three in total. I put them to use on the least important devices.

You may have just had some bad luck or poor wireless coverage in your garage with the Wemo switches. I have 16 Wemo switches and they have been rock solid. Pair these with the Eve door sensors and you can make some great routines with HomeKit.
@EricWelander
@EricWelander 4 года назад
Yeah I love my Eve door sensor for automation too. I'm probably going to have to report back about this in a future video. You aren't the only one who's had great reliability from those plugs. Thanks for sharing. (I have the latest generation Eero Pro mesh Wi-Fi at home with great signal coverage, so I don't think my issues are from weak Wi-Fi, but there are a lot of moving pieces here)

I am not particularly a Hue fanboy, however I have 10 movement detectors these all include temp and light level, both exposed to HomeKit, I have found them very accurate. Also I have many eve smart plugs, however these are bluetooth, I changed over to hue (again) smart plugs, again these are rock solid and fast. I have recently due to the times , had time to install a hombridge server, wow what fun, I have now run out of kit to integrate into it, TV’s, weather stations, thermostats etc... most impressive was the ability to integrate a cheap H264 8 channel cctv PVR, all hardware accelerated MPEG in the Raspberry pi.

I've had issues with the second generation wemo switch as well. However, when the connection drops, which hasn't happened in a few months - fingers crossed. All I do is tap the reset switch at the bottom of the switch, which power cycles it, and it is good to go for another few months. Mine are also in direct line of sight from my ceiling mounted access point.

Another user without issues with Wemo. I have several 2nd gen switches, dimmer switches, a three way switch, and several wemo plugs to control light strips or fans. They have been rock solid for me even with HomeKit automation. I have a smart switch connected to my August lock where it would turn on the foyer light at night when the August is unlocked, turn off if the August is locked. Another automation will turn on my ceiling fan (using the standard 2nd gen switch) if the temperature is above a setup. Sorry that you are having trouble with your Wemo setups.
@EricWelander

Yep, Lutron has been rock solid. My biggest complaint is the “lutron rooms” have become out of sync with my HomeKit rooms. And when i try to sync it, Lutron has put most of those rooms under “other”. Which drives me insane. IMO, there are too many questions that lutron ask when you add a light (ie. purpose, etc..). Are you aware of a way to ditch all the lutron rooms & just use my HomeKit rooms? I dont see a way to delete a room in Lutron either. Ive had a problem renaming some of light switch b/c it thinks there is a duplicate name (i.e. the same name as HomeKit) so it won[t let me rename some of my switches & its been driving me nuts. With that being said, they are ROCK solid. They never go offline. My top 3 to avoid are the Ecobee light switches (has such potential but they are 2.4 only, always going offline & i can’t tell how many times my basement office switch just cuts on the light & it stays on for hours, i go in the basement after hours & the dang lights are on), the MyQ smart bridge works half the time & like you said the Wemo smart outlets have some issues. .My hue motion sensors do a good job turning off/on my lutron switches, but my hue light strips are just weird on some automation scenes..

I also have had problems with connectivity of my Wemo mini plugs and HomeKit in particular. I have a Netgear Orbi AC3000 mesh router system and I did go into the web app to adjust router settings based on tips I had read in support forums. That has helped with the problem of the Minis getting the dreaded "No Response" label in HomeKit. I did find a comment in this thread that suggested changing there channel on the 2.4 GHz band from Auto to channel 11. That commenter said after making this change their Minis have performed flawlessly. I'm going to give that a try.

Agree. Wemo smart plug is u reliable. Other smart plugs are far better. The garage door opener you reviewed was something I purchased and after several months it became completely u reliable. Maybe this depends on the number of devices in your home. I liked the WeMo OK until I started adding more devices, then they became unresponsive & ultimately, unusable. Also, they occasionally would just lose their connection to my WiFi, when all other WiFi devices were just fine. I had to constantly re-pair the devices. I found z-wave to be much more stable. I never had to remove & then re-pair to my network, as I did WeMo WiFi devices. Granted, I wish I had started down a HomeKit compatible path in the beginning, but then my Ring system would be left out. Alexa / Echo Dots do allow me to unify my Ring, dots, and Nest thermostat, but I wish I could do all that with HomeKit. Amazon's system creeps a bit slower, and of course, there are privacy concerns. I’m hopeful that Ring will join the Matter group so that I can do everything through HomeKit in the future.

I’ve had the same problem with Wemo switches. I also have the little Wemo hub. I ended up buying the hub because two of my switches weren’t direct compatible with HomeKit without it. I removed one of my 5 switches and it’s been better, but I still will have an issue on occasion. Most of the time removing power from the hub for 10-20 seconds works, but sometimes I’ll have to unplug the affected plug all together. Such a bummer. I’ve been working toward swapping them out with in-wall switches from iDevices. So far, no problems with those yet, though they are a bit harder to setup.

Eric Welander I’ve seen a number of users on Reddit report problems with HomeKit devices and mesh networks. I set static IP addresses on each one and had my Mac ping each one and I could see they just drop off the network, reconnect, drop off, reconnect over and over again and I even have one of them line of sight to an access point. Kind of sad when such basic wireless functionality just doesn't work whatsoever.

This is so funny. My video today is about wireless switches and how limited they are with other HomeKit products. I didn't know the hue dimmer switch could be reassigned to other brands. That's awesome. Another great video Eric. I'm disappointed about Wemo, I met them at CES and they show me their new switch and plug that they should be releasing soon. Hopefully, they will fix these issues cause I've been hearing about issues a lot. BTW: If you leave a comment about the Phillip hue switch in my video, I'll pin it.

If you have wifi connexion issues is coz you need a more powerful router or a mesh network. Lifx works fine. Normal routers support only 32 deviced connected simultaneously. I have that issue years ago

Fully agree on Lifx. I started my smart light journey with Lifx a couple of years ago and ended up, after a ton of frustration and numerous support calls, with an end-to-end Philips Hue setup. My Lifx lights often used to be unresponsive and just stopped working. Hue on the other hand have been rock solid and just works. 👍🏼

Hi Eric, this is Tim as a Chinese Homekit user, most gadgets of my system are from three Chinese company - Yeelight, Aqara and LifeSmart, they offer a variety of sensors, switchs, lightbulbs and their own apps, which are way cheaper than those brands like lutron, belkin and philips hue. I intergrated them into the home app and they worked well so far.

Wemo is truly the worst. I’ve thrown away all the smart plugs I had, both old style and mini thread ones - about 10. And I’m about to throw away the scene controller. Recommend the Meross power strip and Aqara smart plugs. Cheap and flawless.

i really dont know what the hell you are talking about with Wemo , i have Wemo smart switches and smart plugs through out my home and they are top notch , i had many TP-Link switches and plugs and they are garbage , always dropping connection and terrible to reset and their customer service is a friggin 'joke ! . My Wemo plugs and switches have been way better than TP-Link,s junk !

I just got some Shelly switches, they are not HomeKit compatible by default, it requires to be flashed, and the installation might be hard, but they’re very cheap and incredibly fast, the switch is literally instantaneous with no delay, I haven’t had any connection issues, so, for the price they’re absolutely worth it. Only problem as I mentioned, the installation process.

I totally disagree about his assertion about LIFX. I have over a dozen LIFX lights and love them. They are not perfect, but better than anything I have used. They also are far more reliable to adjust when outside of the network than anything I have tried.

Good stuff yet again Eric! As I’ve mentioned before, we totally agree on the Lutron Casetta in-wall switches. They are SO good. * The advice I’d personally offer to anyone looking to get into the HomeKit - Smart Home game is to ‘bite the bullet’ and pay the premium price for them...they are, without reservation, the best. AND...If you have decided to go the Casetta route, pay the extra $5 (+/-) for the package that includes their Pico Remote. Even if it’s an accessory you don’t think you need, it gives you the capability of an added bit of functionality/convenience that is worth more than it’s cost. Being able to add a ‘3-way’ circuit to a room that isn’t hardwired for one is awesome. Or having a lighting remote on the bedroom nightstand is a convenience that you’ll use more than you’d expect. - The other product that should (arguably, I know your video was focusing on ancillary products) be on the list is the Apple HomePod. In my home, it’s the single most used item for home control...as it’s what the whole family uses to operate most of the other Smart devices. - The Insignia Garage Door controller is another item I’d recommend. Battery life in the door sensor is less than great, but if you can live with that, it is a great product. Super helpful. Just my $0.02. Thanks for the video!
@EricWelander

Thanks as always for your $0.02 and support Bradley! Unfortunately Insignia shut down and no longer sells that garage door opener. 😢 Great advice on Lutron and I agree I love my HomePod. We’ll have to see what Apple does in the HomePod space this year.

TJ Virgil - if you don’t mind swapping it’s battery (roughly) every 2-3 months, the answer is yes. Our garage door gets ‘normal’ use (4-6 cycles per day), and I’m replacing the battery as often as mentioned above. It’s an inconvenience that I find worth it, as I can just check my Home App to verify the door is closed - rather than having to go back home.

Jason Ong - As much as I want to see the Apple ecosystem/AppleTV get better...part of me will be a little sad - as I just purchased another AppleTV 4K box. I’ll be sad if there is some new hotness right after I bought one.

Great video! I have been personally switching my home over to all HomeKit compatible devices, coming from an Amazon Echo/Alexa setup. I've been using the Wemo plugs for about 2 years now, and have only had a couple connectivity issues. Once I bought a new router (Samsung's SmartThings Wifi), this seemed to have gone away and haven't had any issues. (knock on wood). I did recently purchase the Wemo 3-way switches and so far have not had an issue, but it's only been about 45 days since they've been installed. Philips Hue on the other hand (which I have about 6 accessories) has been very reliable and very much recommend. Kind of $$$ to get started, but the reliability is worth it. Keep up the awesome videos!

Thanks Brendon! So it sounds like you use a single router? I have a theory that Wemo products might struggle with certain mesh Wi-Fi networks that have multiple access points in range. That's great to hear Wemo plugs and switches are working well for you. You aren't the only one to mention that either 😀 I agree Hue stuff is expensive, but I tend to get good performance from that investment IMO.
@brendonrisner5191
@brendonrisner5191 4 года назад
Eric Welander I do indeed use a single access point setup at the moment. I went with the SmartThings WiFi for the ability to expand when needed. I’ll be sure to keep a watch out for issues when that happens. Hopefully Wemo will be able to address some of the issues by then. 😋. And yeah, I think of Philips Hue like I do Apple, it costs more but generally they are more reliable and seamless.
@brendonrisner5191
@brendonrisner5191 4 года назад
zsqduke Absolutely, those are two reliable protocols but zwave is licensed out and more restricted on Apple HomeKit compatibility. Zigbee does have a little more presence but have to have a hub. I do have about three Zigbee bulbs that I connect to SmarThings then use Hoobs to integrate those into HomeKit. It’s just not as reliable so those bulbs go in places I don’t care too much about.

I bought the Leviton dimmers and switches and endured their disconnect issues until they figured out the firmware last year. Now they work flawlessly. The important thing to remember is that your router issues “leases” to every Wi-Fi device and they expire from 30 to 60 days. If your Wi-Fi device doesn’t have a connect and reconnect feature like Leviton FINALLY enabled, you will face disconnect issues. It also helps to remember that if you don’t have a Strong mesh system, you will also have issues. To top it off if your in wall switch housing is made out of metal, it will limit the connection as well.

I had “Chamberlain MyQ” garage door opener for around a year. It required a bridge. The system was problematic at best from day one. I went through the troubleshooting recommendations. Nothing improved. Six weeks ago I got a “HomeKit friendly” Meross garage door opener. It has been flawless and was $39.95 on a Prime Day sale. It’s a keeper!

Been using Wemo since before HomeKit support and have had zero problems. The HomeKit support was just the icing on the cake for me. I respectfully disagree with your review.
