Ever heard of an Octocopter?... How about an Octocopter that spins 3 inch props?... What if it rips!? Today the pilots put this weird drone to the test!
Big thanks to Vincent for not only designing this one of a kind machine, but also fully building it and sending it to us to fly! We had a lot of fun with it.

I thought overlapping props reclaimed efficiency, like with contra rotating props? Aerodynamicist leave a comment. That tid bit about amp draw was very curious too. Electricians leave a comment! Perhaps one of the coolest innovations I’ve seen in a while, I like this. Cudos to y’all and the designer!

afaik with coax motors you get less thrust from the bottom one, because the air hitting the bottom prop is already accelerated, so you can't just double the thrust like that. on the other hand that means less work to do for the bottom prop so you pull less current aswell. all in all, coax = more thrust and amps, but not as much as with a usual setup. this overlapping frame will sit somewhere in between.

@@oncrei sure, my guess is that it would result in even higher current though, so you'd probably get even less efficiency compared to a standard geometry

@@mircoheitmann I guess it depends on what do you call efficiency. Its W/g Or just the resulting thrust. I think that the solution is not trivial and should bee tested/simulated.

OK so you want a challenge 😈 let’s go old Skool to new skool on ONE QUAD! That’s right, can you start with non dshot speediest and 9” prop on low KV motor on one arm all the way to 3” on high KV on the last arm. stopping at each gen on the way round, maybe with a KK 2 flight controller ;) Anyway, don’t know if it will work nor have I seen it 🤷‍♂️ anyway Have a good un’ :)

Looks like it might be a perfect 3d/reversing prop rig... all those smaller props might make a big difference in rotation delay and overall efficiency on relatively lousy symetrical 3d props. As-is, it has quickness and efficiency to spare...

Eight motors = less load per motor and more power output at a given throttle. Add the greater stability and you have yourself a speedy agile beast!

A guy in Singapore i use to fly with makes some crazy frames but only for personal use maybe if your interested I could try and get him to send you one its a plus stlye frame but is unique

My math might not be right but it looks like 8 - 3" props have 56.54 sq inch disc area 4 - 5" props have 78.53 sq inch disc area You could add three more propellers (lol) to the 3 inch and still have less disc area than a 5" kwad. How is this thing so badass? Maybe just because the props spool up faster? I dunno, but it sure looks fun to fly.

You have to draw a circle around the outer point each prop and find out how many percent the props cover of the big circle

3" motors these days are way more powerful than they used to be. It makes me wonder about a 3" quad with 4" arms and 4" props... similar to the 5" quad with 6" arms and 6" props craze. Would it be any good?

@@octokwadfpv2816 first of all, amazing build. I too am interested in building something like this. Did you cut the frame yourself or did you Frankenstein two unibodies together? Do you have a parts list or tutorial online somewhere? Again, you did an amazing job on this one.

@@octokwadfpv2816 sooooo..... what would it be like if you ran a 3D setup with regular props? And have half the props facing one direction for positive thrust and the other half of the props upside down to generate positive thrust when upside down.... Just thinking outloud. 3D props arenso compromised being a paddle with no real air foil. And regular props get really awful when run in reverse for 3D flight. But if half the props are upright and half inverted I wonder how they would behave versus an all 3D prop build or an all regular prop build. Definitely have my brain working a bit on what might be possible with one of my 3D 3Cam setups.

I don’t think overlapping props would be more inefficient, they should make it easier for each other to pull through air and allow them to accelerate easier which counterbalances the reduced “area”.

It's about to get an upgrade. Moving from 1408 on 4s to 1507 on 6s. It'll lighten the build just a bit while increasing the power over 35%.

As cool and neat as this was, and it sure the Fu** was/ It takes me 6 moths to save,scrape , skimp and going with out to be able to build a quad to fly , cherish ,love and keep in the air for 6 months just to keep the ball rolling .To enjoy my hobby when life has a steady crap stream lined up 4 you , having a working drone to fly is priceless to me. I'm sure it truly keeps me from going insane.To build a drone and send it 2 the boys of Rotor Riot Would be the most UN-healthy honer of selfless action I could possible dream to every be able to accomplice in 2 life times.Some men are truly blessed with the gift of giving that would put me in the ground.Dang $ is evil & I am sick.Happy fly n guys.Don't ever stop what you do.

I saw in a previous video when he flew he used a sort of pinch grip on the left stick but a thumb grip on the right stick. I thought that was super interesting because people usually just go one way or the other so I tried it that way and I've flown that way ever since.

The octo was running an SP Racing F7 DUAL Flight Controller - seriouslypro.com/spracingf7dual SP Racing FC's have always supported 8 motors, the new SP Racing H7 EXTREME does too. Note: You can run 8 motors just fine in Betaflight as well as Cleanflight. Well done Vincent for making such a cool machine! Love it!
