My whole life I have wanted to break a Guinness World Record. Combine that with my love of drones and going fast, this video was almost inevitable for me to make. The idea started about 4 months ago. I decided I wanted to build the fastest drone / quadcopter / quad ever made and break the current world record. This was the most difficult project I have ever undertaken, but the final result was well worth it. We managed to get a recorded top speed of 401 km/h and an average recorded speed over 100m in opposite directions of 397 km/h or 247 mph. The official record is still pending and needs to be verified by Guinness.
Funded by Insta 360 as part of their Think Bold Project!
Thank you to the following people for helping make this video possible:
My dad, Mike Bell, for designing the frame and helping along the whole way.
/ @mike-bell
Darren Smith for the drone tuning and shooting the follow cam drone footage on both attempt days.

Hloni Coleman for shooting both attempt days.
/ hlonicoleman
The Worcester Gliding Club for giving me permission to do the world record attempt on their grounds.

Ryan Lademann for setting an epic record to beat and inspiring me to try and beat it for myself as well as making his GPS speed analyser code available to the public which turned out to be very helpful!

Regarding the instability problem, have a look at rocket design theory. This little monster flies much more like a rocket than like an aircraft. Putting your center of pressure behind your center of mass would get it naturally flying straight as an arrow. I'd basically just put fins on your tailcone which would also be a handy way to take off and land without any special equipment.
@yotu9670

I Agree with Dan on the fins they should be mounted a long the bottom !! 4 of them on the green motor covers also you could go with a lighter weight filament ! on the 3 D printer for weight.

This is meant to break records, not be practical. Those tend to be mutually exclusive terms and whenever someone says they've achieved both it's usually a car commercial, or someone trying to sell you something. Would imagine the battery life is just long enough to test a run so as to keep the weight down.

maybe putting the center of pressure more behind the center of gravity will make it stable, for instance, the nose could be a lot shorter and the internals can be shifted towards the back. the nose should be shaped like an egg pointy bit so it doesn't create too much instability when the air angle of attack changes (turbulence, control inputs)
@pauls5745
@pauls5745 6 месяцев назад
I think a longer air frame would be more stable in the direction of travel. an example is the fastest planes have really long noses. In effect rear control surfaces have more leverage
@mrCyk0
@mrCyk0 6 месяцев назад
Exactly this some passive stability from a correct centre of pressure would do wonders. A drop shape is also good from a BC perspective for subsonic applications. Long nose is bad here since it's not supersonic and it would be detrimental from a stability perspective. Though length behind is fine especially if it reduces frontal area. Aerodynamic shaping of the booms could also help.

Well done. That's an impressive drone. What I don't understand, that you didn't really explain is how you made revision 3 I think it was, over double the power (and add more weight) and managed to not melt the motors when the previous revision did melt a motor. Did you use different motors or tone down the voltage but still manage to get more speed out of it?

The drone oscillated since you made a shell that looks aerodynamic, but actually isn't. You should look at how space companies make reentry capsules. They're kind of bulky at the front, and sharp at the end, to smooth out turbulent air. Like a drop of water. Put the blades closer to the bulky part of a 'drop' and the more speed it gains, the more stable the flight will be.
@IroncladInsanity

they do that because they're breaking the sound barrier and creating shocks you donkey, that has little bearing on subsonic flight

Very cool! Seems like the stability behavior is because the center of pressure is ahead of the center of mass. If you stick the battery behind it it should do better. Or like the previous record you could add a tail! I wonder also if you could squeeze more performance out of it by selecting a different propeller. I'd be surprised if the propeller is designed for the advance ratios you get flying that fast, although maybe the extra rpms from pushing more power through the motors helps to make up for it.
@Mike-Bell
@Mike-Bell 7 месяцев назад
Prop pitch is the highest available. Moving the battery back moves the c of g back which makes it worse.
@m.d.6649
@m.d.6649 6 месяцев назад
@markkalsbeek5883 I would agree! Yes the battery would lower the CG but for landing and starting this would be beneficial, also in high Speed cruise Aerodynamik stability is key, the cg behind the Motors would make sense in this case. When done correctly the stress on the FC would be reduced, therefore more usable Forward thrust. Not to forget about the slight angle the craft needs to maintain to generate upward lift. This can offset the "rocket shape'" and will cause a moment around the pitch Axis continously tring to lift the nose up. With an alternativ approach this effect would be ruled out. When placing corresponding oropellers at an slight upward angle to generate some upward thrust it might even ve possible to Have the body oerfectly aligned in flight. I could imagine the body itself to generate some lift based on its shape which is not the case in this shape. Nevertheless stunning work done here!

@@LukeMaximoBell1 It really is ironic: I HATE heights. Freeze on the third rung of a ladder. As embarrassed as I am to admit it, when I put my house on the market back in 2017, I had to scrap and paint the eves. Was not a problem until it came to the face of the garage when it came to above what I could reach standing on the third run of the ladder. That moment was yet another example of why my mom is absolutely awesome: I froze and she didn't even consider laughing at me and talked me back down on the ground. Told me to give her the paint brush and the can of paint. Like a straight up Titan, momma lept up the ladder and painted the the upper half of the face of the garage, standing on her tiptoes one rung below the top to get the peak. Momma got it done and did not make me feel...well...all the feelings and pride and ego being bruised that any man would feel. Momma got it done. Came back down from the ladder like it was nothing. Me, 37 year old "man" at that point, hoping beyond hope my wife and son did not see that; well, let's just say that I did not really feel like a man. Mom, God love her, just pulled me into a momma bear hug and promised not to tell anyone. That is why it is so ironic I am so fascinated with flight and stuff. Going on 8 years now: mom kept her word about not telling the missus and junior.

I do crazy experiments with my own drone setups but this was an epic journey. Congratulations man. On most stuff I come up with, people say it is crazy and even ask why I try them. Well, I learn best when I fail. Wish had more time and budget to try more. These days my aim is to build a 8 motor 2.5 inch cinewhoop to carry a 150gram action camera over 7 minutes without burning anything 😂 Seriously man, good job.

More motors isn't going to give you more flight time, brother.
@fpvosman
@fpvosman 7 месяцев назад
@@MysteryD I am researching it. We will see about that. I saw examples of similar attempts. Most famous one is axisflying x8 since it is still on a lot of websites to buy. And you are right, it flies 3 minutes with full gopro. My 4 motor 2.5 inch cinewhoop can get 4 already. But it is gutted and everything is moved to the center of gravity of the drone including the gopro. It even has cool motors after 4+ minutes flight with gopro. After calculating the weight, I think I can make a x8 similar to axisflying x8 100 grams lighter than theirs. I want to see if their tiny cinelifter is really ineffective since the top motor is pushing the air on the bottom one and the prop guards are making it worse. I got some ideas to tackle but lets see. If you have some knowledge and want to chat, you can reach out and we can brainstorm maybe? I dont think I will stop anytime soon until I carry a full gopro with a 2.5inch footprint more than 6 minutes.

@@fpvosman they current and Amps drawn by the extra motors are going to drain the lipo faster, and like you said, the motor orientation creates a lot of drag. If you want longer flight times, focus on reducing weight, and if you aren't worried about speed, use lithium ion instead of lithium polymer batteries. Chris Rosser has some good videos about motor efficency. I have been flying fpv quadcopters for about 5 years. I also build, repair, and tune as a service.

That first test flight at 2mins gave me some flashbacks! haha. I stand on my drone with one foot now for the first test flight or any time i change settings in betaflight. One time I accidentally had it setup to "resume last command" when it lost telemetry. That thing took off full speed indoors, hit me, and literally cut me over 40 times within a second. I put my hands out to stop it and my hand looked like a cooked hotdog all sliced up.. There were about 4 cuts that went through tendons and muscles almost to the bone. That was only with 2204 1960s running 4s on older tech about 10 years ago. I couldn't imagine getting eaten by this thing!!! Congrats on the record too!!

It is interesting that you were able to accomplish this with the design you implemented. The drone has considerable weight in the cone shaped verticle element. The aerodynamic forces do to air striking it at high velocity are incredible. I would have attempted a horizontral design like many of the commercial drones available today which would make it sleeker and redistribute the center of gravity.
