In the 80's a friend of mine kept telling me I should take guitar lessons from this guy named "Joe" at _Tupper and Reed Music_ in Berkeley. I actually often went to that very music store on the weekends because they had the best selection of sheet music, and I was transcribing violin solos for guitar (Bach, Vivaldi, Paganini etc). I even remember seeing this guitar instructor come out from lessons downstairs talking to students a few times, and though he seemed like a cool guy, I was more interested in getting a job giving lessons if anything. But they said they had that pretty well covered (now I know why, lols). But my friend persisted and I was seriously considering checking this teacher out when I first heard _Not Of This Earth_ and was blown away. Then maybe a week after that Surfing With The Alien came out, and I was ass out. :/ No doubt I would have only been able to afford his lessons for a couple of months had I jumped on it immediately, but I still can't help but kick myself for lagging until it was too late. Luckily for me I was friends with a half dozen of his students, so a lot of what he taught was passed down to me through trading licks and ideas with them. But still.. lols

The Red House riff reminds me of Leslie West, in my opinion Satriani is so accessible because he listened to the greats and allowed himself to be influenced!

Satch is my favourite electric guitar player. Circa 2006 I was a teenager and stumbled across Crushing Day off of SwtA which blew me away. I had been listening to rock and heavy metal for a 2 or 3 years and had never heard of him or the guitar virtuoso genre. It sparked a interest in music theory and becoming a better guitar player for me. Thanks for doing this.

Wow David. Your preface to the lesson is exactly how I felt. I couldn’t get on board with Vai because I was deathly loyal to Eddie. But Satch was perfectly ok to like and learn from. Lol.

Joe satch is one of my all time favorites. One of the reasons I wanted to learn how to play. There’s Joe, Zack wylde and Dimebag. I love the legato licks and melodic ideas satch produces. He’s an infinite source of musical inspiration. I’m always blown away by mr Brewster as well. This guys not only can play with the best of them but he also knows his theory inside and out. He has a way of explaining things that really makes sense, even to me, and I have no idea what I’m doing most of the time. 😀 love your lessons! Thank you and happy new year!

Great video! I remember listening to the radio in late 1986, a local college station did a metal show on Friday nights, and they played Hordes of Locusts. I was blown away! At the time I was into Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, but prior to that was into Maiden, Priest, NWOBHM, and also Scorpions, UFO, Schenker, Rainbow so I was used to some amazing guitar players, but Satriani was different. Based on that song I bought Not of This Earth and the next couple of Satriani’s albums. My musical tastes changed in the late 80s but I recently bought Not of This Earth and Surfing with the Alien on CD and it is still great!

Joe Satriani is a GIANT of guitar. It takes a mighty talented player to step into the shoes of a post vacated by the venerable Ritchie Blackmore. Joe did just that in 1994 for Deep Purple. Would have loved to see how it all would have turned out if he had stuck with Purple for a few years & albums. Thanks for the great lesson!

Happy New Year, Mr B. Promised myself I'd make great strides in my playing this year. Noticed that little mistake you made, there, and I'm aiming to make my mistakes sound as good as yours (tho, mine will certainly be more frequent). Thanks, and looking forward to another year of your great vids

Satch is the boss. A great composer and technician but always so melodic. I don’t think we can underestimate the importance of the lessons he took with Lennie Tristano. If you notice his licks tend to be things that you could sing. That's because Tristano played him slowed down licks by the likes of Charlie Parker which he made him sing and then transcribe for the guitar and he emphasised making your playing expressive. I would encourage The Late Night Lessons community to try to transcribe Miles Davis licks and Charlie Parker licks for guitar if they feel stuck in a rut. It will definitely broaden their playing.

Great lesson Dave!! I have been a Satch fan for years but have fallen out of the loop for the last 10 or so. This lesson had gotten me back into his music again!! It doesn’t get much mention but I absolutely love his Crystal Planet album. I think it just came along at the right time in my life, I was starting college and getting out on my own a bit. It was the soundtrack to my life for many months after it was released.
