In this video I want to share with you 3 phrases that I transcribed from George Benson that reveal the genius in how he structured his lines. And to show you this, not only am I going to play each line but I am going to analyze them note by note so you can better understand their melodic architecture!

That's awesome Richie. I'm working through the John Scofield intervallic licks, triad pairs in fourths, triad pairs and currently working through Volume II, Module 4b. I marvel at the amount of knowledge you possess and analysis you convey in your programs. A lifetime of commitment. Just amazing!

@@RichieZellon When I get through Volume II, I plan to sign up for the Elite Membership. There's so much great material there that I'd like to explore, particularly the more post bop tonality stuff.

Thank you Richie for this very nice lesson! Hey, just a little side note and a fond memory I have of George Benson. I had the pleasure of hanging out and sharing a table with George many moons ago when we were both out to see Phil Upchurch playing with Jimmy Smith at this small club in Los Angeles, CA. George did not play. We both simply enjoyed the show and talked in between. Great guy!

This video truly rocks! George doesn't get enough recognition in this space for all he's done for guitar not to mention the genres he's touched. Is John McLaughlin next? He's another genius who's name I never hear enough. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Paul! Love McLaughlin's playing and have done some transcriptions but still not sure if I can do them justice. Some of those lightning fast fusion lines are not my forte. Still, I will probably give it a shot sometime.

Thanks for another great lesson, Richie! I often say this is one of the best solos on Stella - ever. It's interesting that he plays it in G, which may be the original key, where most do it in Bb, as in the Real Book. Also great are his solos on Jimmy Smith's recording, I'll Drink To That and Off The Top. George plays the slickest string of descending chromatic triplets on Off The Top, which is totally mind blowing. Thanks, again!

Again nice. Really good presentation. 3 bit size chunks at a time. Curious where you got the Jazz City? I have been endorsing Peerless since 2006. The brand changed hands recently but the guitars are killer.

@RichieZellon 3 года назад
Thanks! Yes Peerless is great. This is my 2nd Jazz City. I got it from one of my students who in turn got from you! I now recall I tried to get in touch with you in the past through your Facebook page but never got an answer...don't worry, no hard feelings 😊 Are you still a Peerless dealer?

@@RichieZellon Oops... Well, we can certainly stay in touch now. I did move from LA to Colorado Springs a few years back and some things got lost in the mix. In addition Peerless sold their brand about that time and the guitars became unavailable. They always had issues marketing in the US, so I guess the new people are staying inside South Korea. I love their guitars though. And what bargain on the used market these days! I am really impressed with your lesson presentations. The '3 licks to steal' is clever. Benson, Martino. I already forwarded the links to several people. I did take a break from playing for a while so in my woodshedding endeavors I scoured around for some material to work with. Your little clips were mana from heaven... Yes, I can use transcribe and do all the time, however your choices of what to present are brilliant. These little bits are now in my bag of vocabulary. Let's do stay in touch. I will recommend you when I can...

@@docdoscojazz Thanks Doc! Glad you like the lessons! Sorry to hear about Peerless not being available in the US. What about GuitarsNJazz in New Jersey? I have a few students that purchased them there.

@@RichieZellon Yes, Lou is still selling Peerless. He had a ton of inventory and now he has no competition for selling new guitars. But once they are gone no more in the stores. Peeress did a dump before they changed hands and many are reasonably priced used on Reverb.

The ab major 7 makes sense - both chords are diatonic to f melodic minor and since melodic minor has no avoid notes it works

Nice stuff Richie would be nice if you played an intermediate speed constantly while you’re going through the notes so that the time would be halftime then you can get a feel for the colors

George Benson has the tastiest eighth note bop on the block. And the groove he plays with those lines, his notes pop like Cannonball Adderley does on his saxophone. But what really interests me is GB's early stuff, like his stuff with Jack McDuff or even his stuff off "Benson Burner". Those double stop bluesy licks that sound like a mix of blues guitar and blues organ all mixed up in one. Always had a hard time getting those on guitar, he plays them real nice. Would it be too basic to do a lesson on Benson double stops?
@RichieZellon
