When the actor does it well in my view it's like the production team, workers and direction knew what they were doing along with a great actor. When they do a poor job there's no star saving it, most of the times anyway.

The only aspect that made the movie enjoyable. Tobey's wooden performance & jay z in the soundtrack. I know it's luhrmann's style but jesus christ this wasn't the project for him

I think it has a lot to do with the movie itself, containing lots of cgi effects.. the scenario as well, having some complexities but remaining a bit less interesting than all his other movies i would say. Gatsby is a classic dont get me wrong, although I’ve only watched it once, but i don’t think it’s his best performance. It might sound a bit harsh but when you see the movies he has done throughout his career, other movies are a bit superior in terms of complexity, scenario and acting. An actor is not solely rewarded for his acting, or remembered for his performance, but also for the movie itself. Leonardo is the best actor of our generation without a doubt, and even though he’s not my favorite i still see him as being the best of all time to this day, but for me other movies like Django, the Revenant, the Departed and the wolf of wallstreet have a deeper complexity in the acting, more interesting stories too, that keep you on the edge, and i think that’s why people like these performances better than the one in Gatsby.

@@mobileusermobileuser981 i cant think of anyone more « classy » and charismatic than Leo who could have played Gatsby honestly.. maybe you have another name for the role, but i cant think of anyone else as classy. I think it suits him so well to play the bourgeois type. He’s got that handsome face, blonde, blue eyes, proper on himself, cocky smile, and his impulsivity in his acting is always dead on. When Leo passes from a passive to an explosive line or behavior, i think no one does it best than him besides me, but i cant act on purpose 🤣

The Departed, Wolf of Wall Street, Inception, Gangs of New York. All incredible movies. All have one thing in common, HIM.

Starting from This Boy's Life followed by What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I know that time he's not some pretty boy label only.

I agree with you. Titanic is amazing on its own, but it is not Leo's greatest role. He has had many other more complex roles where the circumstances offered him to use a larger "colour palette".

Leonardo is excellent in it but for me Luhrmann’s style just didn’t fit. Too much CGI for the time period being portrayed.
