3 Mistakes I made when I was New to BJJ (After Wrestling)

Being new to BJJ and Transitioning to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu has it's advantages.
While everyone else, who is new to grappling, is learning how to shrimp and do front rolls. You can already do solid takedowns, hold side control and mount, and just have experience grappling.
Being a former wrestler provides the benefit of providing lots of competition opportunities and you will have learned how to push yourself mentally through the pain of fatigue.
But, coming from Wrestling to BJJ also has it's drawbacks.
Everyone is different. But early on for me when I was a BJJ White Belt. Wrestling affected my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 3 big ways.
1. I wanted nothing to do with the Guard in my BJJ training. Bad idea for a White Belt in BJJ!
2. BJJ doesn't have seasons like most sports. So I had to learn how to mentally turn off my desire to always win. When it's time to prepare for competitions. You turn it on. But to truly grow you have to learn how to relax and experiment.
3. Lastly, the rhythms my body had gotten used to from Wrestling was completely different in Brazilian Jiujitsu. I had to adjust to those.
Thanks to Jacob for the question.
I hope this helps any of you wrestlers out there who are wrestlers getting into BJJ!

That fatigue thing about wrestlers is so true, im not a wrestler or grappler, just boxing/muay thai but i plan on starting BJJ next week. This wrestling kid i do some MMA sparring with is so impressive. I used to think he had an endless gas tank but I slowly realized he was just as tired as i was but he was pushing through the fatigue, very mentally tough i respect wrestlers a lot.

There was a study in the mid 00s where they had two olympic wrestlers go at it for a full match and when they were done they took their lactic acid levels and others and in the end they concluded that a round of full power wrestling between two equals is around as tiresome as runnin 800m as fast as you can and straight after deadlifting your pr.

I am a few months into bjj with a wrestling background. My two most punished bad habits are getting guillotined from attacking legs and getting my back taken from naturally going to my knees instead of trying to pull guard. Strengths from wrestling are speed when passing, maintaining pressure on top and almost always come out ahead during a scramble. Nice vid, more parallels to wrestling please.
@landoutdoors860
@landoutdoors860 7 лет назад
Ditto for me on this, I was good at wrestling, after 4 months of BJJ I'm just starting to not get guillotined when attacking legs, but I still give my back too often, especially to the higher belts who know and can "sense" that I'm going to do that. The plus side, just as you staed in your comment, is that when I am in side control, or mount, none of the blue belts in class can do much with the constant pressure i exert, and even the purple belts in class have a hard time moving me off the top. One more plus is grip strength and knowing how to grab parts of my opponents body. I had something that resembled a darce choke (or maybe some kind of anaconda) last night, and got a tap without even choking the other white belt, just because he was under me, and I wasn't letting go of the head and arm I had, and there was nowhere for him to roll. Learning proper hip movement and attacks from closed guard are taking a long time for me....even after four months, I'm not 100 percent comfortable on my back

Double leg: 1) drive your ear into the hip, and the shoulder into the middle of the body, it's really hard to guillotine when you don't have room to put your 2nd hand through. 2) always try to grab the opposite knee from the side that you are getting guillotined (not the leg, grab the gi and hold it for dear life), if you work up your grip strength then you can latch on to that thing like nobodies business, then when they attempt to pull guard with the guillotine in place it's usually possible to just go over their leg into side control at which point the guillotine does nothing. Single leg, similar rule applies just drive your ear into their body (usually hip/upper leg), its difficult to put in the 2nd arm to complete the guillotine. If you are getting caught earlier, before your ear can make contact with their body/leg you are probably starting the move from too far away. Or maybe you are just too predictable cos the guys know you are a wrestler, which means they will look to sprawl/guillotine every-time, so it may not even be the case your doing something wrong, but more-so the opponent just already knows what your are going to do, if you know the opponent is itching to sprawl throw in a hip toss that will take advantage of that. You can start a double leg/single leg from the typical grips (one on the collar, one on the elbow) so maybe try get these grips first, then go for the double leg instead of trying to dive in on the leg from distance. As for rolling on to you stomach, (i'm assuming you are starting out in side control facing away from the opponent, so terrible position) you can actually roll to your stomach, there is a good way out of it, you opponent will go for the seat belt, you take the opponents arm that is towards your waist, ideally you should go for it with both hands (which means you move the top of your body to be resting on shoulder and head), then lift your waist up and create a frame. Your butt, should clear the opponents arm. So you're making a triangle with outstretched legs + your head/shoulder while your arm is holding their arm so that it crosses your butt to your hip. At this point it should relatively easy to re-guard as they don't have good control. Good luck.

Anytime a wrestler comes onto the mat, you can always catch them in a guillotine, and you can always take their back easily, they always turtle up in bad situations, easy to armbar because they go for underhooks when they dont have positions, their legs are easy to pass. I know because I made the same mistakes coming from a wrestling background :/

I was very resistant to going to my back at first and learned quickly that playing only a top game wasn't going to get the job done. I also resorted to my turtle too much and would get subbed all the time. Over time I learned to make my turtle an asset in my game. But damn, I felt like a fish out of water early on when I started jiujitsu.

Exposure to the training culture of wrestling is a major advantage. However, it can vary depending on the programs that you've participated in. Some wrestling programs just suck. Anyway, IMO it's the mentality that is the biggest advantage. If you've trained in quality programs, you know what it takes to win. The mentality is translatable anywhere. I can remember long days at tournaments - multiple matches in a day. Coming back and doing it again the next day. Cutting weight (a discipline and workout in itself). 2x and sometimes 3x practices (mornings, lunch, then afternoons; drilling, drilling, drilling, weights, running). All physically and mentally exhausting. This is the advantage of wrestling.

Love this, I sparred no gi for the first time at my school last night. Coming from a wrestling pedigree I found that I was able to take down my sparring partners but I was so aggressive and quick in my transitions that I had no technique just defence... and resorted to turtleing for my base when I was uncomfortable in the guard. I think the series would be great because the intensity is something I'm really struggling with, when they say we're sparring I immediately revert back to live wrestling drills which we all know are 2 very different styles and intensity levels. Thanks for the great info!

Coming from a bit of a catch wrestling background I feel all of these. Hate guard, im always putting people on their back instead of taking. Th gi is a huge thing for me, I have no idea how to work with it, I'm always getting stuck in collar chokes... my biggest thing though, is I'm always worried that I'm going to hard while rolling and people may think I'm a douche for it.

Dudeee, spot on with everything, I feel very explosive compared to jiu Jitsu guys too, but in that explosive movement my neck is so much more exposed. Grip fighting has also been very frustrating, I’m used to grabbing single collar ties, or wrist, hand fighting. Now it’s grip fighting on the gi which is so frustrating. Definitely enjoying this journey though!

I'm not resistant to the guard, just the closed guard. First off, I got stocky, short legs, so that's hard to hold just because I have a hard time even locking my feet around my opponents' waists. That's a physical limitation. Secondly, I can literally slam people who do closed guard WAY too easily. People don't release or even know how to defend against being lifted up. Once I get a person up in the air like that, even some higher belts, it's pretty much gonna be over when I say it's over... when I get tired of thrashing their head on the ground. Nevermind what an MMA-type fighter or street brawler would do to a person with their fists in that position. Straight up, I feel that the closed guard is WAY to easy to get seriously hurt in, especially in street fights, and it shouldn't be taught to white belts... it should be a very advanced technique for people that would know how to prevent a slam. (When to release, counters, etc.) Maybe I'm wrong, since I'm new to BJJ, but I've been told not to slam people (Because I was about to slam a purple belt. I was gonna be gentle because I realize what that would do to them.) and am having to fight the impulse to slam people. Basically, the rules allow players to exploit their opponents using closed guard without knowing the most common, easiest, and most effective defense against it - stand up and slam their head on the pavement. (Or, mat.) Teaching a white belt an exploit to a rule that does not exist outside that gym is likely going to be disastrous. Just my two cents. Very new BJJ practitioner and looking for the right type of guard to learn and train with. Seeing Chewy's videos, I am thinking half guard might be a really great option for me.

I was 25 when i started BJJ but before hand i was a TKD black belt and a 4 time UIL wrestling champion. needless to say i lasted about 10 seconds longer than anyone else my first roll but still tapped like a bitch lol. but some advice for my wrestling guys out there LEARN to be comfortable on your back it could take 6 months to a year before you are really comfortable. and in GI remember that your opponent has GRIPS so adapt your shooting to compensate!

Follow up question on training hard vs laying off. I've been debating to my self about if it's better to be resilient and fight out of bad positions, rather than conceding and holding yourself to a standard of preventative jiutjisu. Some people get my neck or collar choke have a technique and have it a minor adjustment away, or if I'm getting the odd breath or air and feeling myself freeing my carotid arteries intermittently to keep the walls from closing in. I have a tendency to lean towards not giving up in those situations, not saying I don't eventually tap out if they're smart enough to make the right adjustments. What do you think of those two ways of thought, is there a time and place for both of them?
@deathByStupid
@deathByStupid 7 лет назад
Depends on the position, you need to know the range of submissions, some moves have a tiny range of movement between tapping and injury. Some have a huge range between tapping and injury, I would tap to the high risk ones faster. Likewise if you are fighting a high level/big guy and you know they could just crank it if they wanted to and they are really close, just tap. But in all other cases you should force them to finish, my arm bar defense is a result of years of stubbornly fighting arm bars, i have super long arms which when i started were very prone to arm barring, the amount of leverage someone can creating with a long arm is massive, but now I don't fear it at all. But it's 10 different techniques for fighting arm bars side by side, and switching constantly to keep them guessing, you can't develop that if you just tap to arm bar straight away. Lastly chokes, i always fight chokes, my neck is strong as hell now, again it's years of getting choked out that developed that strength, and it wins you matches because choking someone is very energy intensive, it's very different for you to use neck muscles versus your opponent burning out their arms. Prevention is still super important, if a black belt is choking you, you will be choked out, they normally have a super developed squeeze, but if you're fighting white/blue/purple then you will win plenty of fights by simply letting your opponent burn out their muscles.
@BirthRight77
@BirthRight77 7 лет назад
That's a perfect flushed out statement on the mentality. I tap soon on armbars if I know I'm not escaping. It's when someone has a choke that you know your neck can sustain and you feel them squeezing as hard as they can when it's not there. Same as armbars, if my neck is getting cranked I'll tap quick.

This is good but I need Part II. Specific things where wrestling is screwing me up: When in top guard I have been instinctively leaning forward and getting destroyed; When in top side control I have been grabbing a half nelson or a cradle (which are useless by themselves)

The three best pieces of advice I received as a wrestler transitioning to BJJ: 1) start pulling guard all the time, just commit to learning how to compete there, 2) wear the gi, figure out how to incorporate grips into your game, and 3) lose your ego, its about getting better, not winning every roll, if you aren't getting beat in practice then you aren't learning.

This literally explains my situation. Especially the rhythm of jiu jitsu compared to wrestling. Sometimes I just keep going to get to get to someone’s back in a scramble forgetting that a person doesn’t care about being on their back so I’ll literally tire myself out. I started to realize after 3 months that when I took the guard more seriously and learned the positions I got put in less and less submissions than the first week. I’m still struggling as I keep getting choked out but I think with time I’ll eventually get it. Also the competitiveness is a fact cause I’ll look to roll with black belts and I’ll probably take them down but realize that their jiu jitsu completely removes any ability for me to do anything. Can’t lie I love the fast paced wrestling and the movement but the grips and submissions in jiu jitsu really throw me off.

I just want to take things neutral but obviously it's not the way it goes. I am shit at BJJ having only a few classes and read the Army combatives manual, but I love rolling whenever I get the chance and even I can tell a difference between wrestlers and BJJ guys. To me, as an outsider looking in, it seems that wrestlers have a different "balance" on the ground. They seem harder to sweep, but once you have them on their back they are more vulnerable.
