3 Moments That My Art Failed - What Happens When a Client Doesn't Like Your Work?

In this video I talk about three moments that I worked for a client on an image and failed. One story from early in my career, another was during my first painting for Magic: The Gathering, and finally a series of images I did for Legends of Runeterra. All of which were difficult in the moment, but I've learned a lot during those times and hope that I can help others feel more comfortable with the times that they didn't as well as they were hoping with their art.
Feel free to share any personal experiences or stories you have in the comments to help let new and experienced artists know that this is all normal and let's just laugh through the pain together haha.
I can't believe how many people have been continuing to watch and subscribe recently. It means a lot to me. It's crazy to think I've gotten over 10k subs just within the last two months. Thank you everyone! I'll keep the videos comin!

@TheAngelArrow
start every video with a blank stare and no emotion in the tone and you just say "Hi." after 5 seconds of staring, then cut to you acting normally

9 league pieces in 3 months?!?!?! Dude riot are outta their mind for that request smh. And why even ask how many you could take on, only to “um actually “ you and demand essentially double the work. All of that just doesn’t sit well with me. Also great video, I really appreciate the insight, and for what it’s worth I really liked the colors in your og snake final piece :)
@DukePaints
I think the thing I appreciate most about this is knowing I can fuck up and not end my entire art career and live in the woods eating bugs. Nice to know im allowed to fail because its for sure whats hindering my art progress the most
@mikren_Art
When I did my first magic card I had put so much pressure on myself that I had ended up spending over 70 hours and re painting it 5 or 6 times, I turned in a unfinished not rendered final piece. Not to mention I was weeks past the deadline due to me not able to get it right. The art director was really nice about and it and completely understood, I was sure I was never going to get hired again but I’m now on my 4th card! WotC has amazing art directors that are glad to give you a second chance!
@NotSoMax
I absolutely love this, it’s definitely something that you never see artists talk about but it’s something we’ve all gone through. I think it’s especially difficult because a lot of us are already really critical of our own work so having those fears validated can be super devastating. But it’s important to learn from your missteps and understand why X piece wasn’t up to the quality standard of your other work.
@tanoyfrommars
Just hearing this is giving me PTSD of my early days as a 3d artists. that shitty feeling still haunts me
@Ghostlicht
These types of videos should be more common (not just from you in particular, Forrest!). It helps artists of every skill and background understand that getting work from a big company is a fleeting reward. It's easy to set a goal and name a company that we'd love to work for, but it's unimaginably harder meeting their expectations once that chance is given. Also, when you said you've gone through 1 year with that commitment to never fail a client again, that hits very close to home. Appreciate your time and effort in putting this video out for us!

Hearing Riot games intentionally putting more pressure on a group who set their boundaries early on is just... so classic Riot games.
@throstlewanion
It kinda blows my mind seeing this video looking behind the curtain because I would've never imagined that Riot would've given you such a hard time. Seeing Troll Scavenger is how I fell in love with your art
@thecatherd
I really love clients who give honest feedback, regardless of whether they hire me again or not. Some of the roughest clients I've had in terms of revisions and such have ended up being the biggest learning curves.

Starting a video with a "Hi" is:

Once again I am reminded that sometimes a job is just a job and you take what you can learn so you can move on wiser. Thanks for sharing, appreciated this video a lot!

Thanks for this video. currently dealing with this and its been weighing on me. Feeling unmotivated to make personal work or client work. This video helps to show it's normal, and you just got to keep trying.
@DanielSolis
Cynthia Sheppard is an awesome AD. You had a great opportunity to learn from her on your first MtG card.
@SweatiestDegree
you actually going over old pieces and saying what you'd do different now is an amazing idea for content tbh
@levelNeroZero
Stuff like these get hidden a lot
@fulicious2991
I think this is actually motivating, as an artist that isn't even on YOUR level yet, to see that even you struggle with getting it right every time
@timkongart
Love your videos man! Its understandably a rare thing for an artist to discuss the inner details of projects that don't go super well and to only focus on the successful ones. ITs a vulnerable topic to talk about and I think for a lot of artists its almost like it highlights a insecurity/imposter symdrome they might have internally.
@allegroappassionata7427
Thanks for sharing this! I’m just a hobbyist artist and was looking to do commissions but I’ve always been afraid of not meeting expectations 😭. It definitely helps seeing other’s experience. Love your videos!
