♥ In today's video, I share my 3-month experience with my copper IUD! Overall I am happy with it but I am having some issues with frequent headaches. They're not bad enough that I want to change to some other method though. I will probably stick with the IUD for as long as it works this well.
Comment below if you have had any similar experiences with headaches!

I've been considering copper IUD because my epilepsy pills (I take a reeeeeally small amount but still) won't let me use any hormonal birth control. These videos have been really helpful!! 🙏🏻 By the way, if someone with epilepsy wants to share his/her experience, I would be incredibly grateful!!🥺

I too have epilepsy - mine is Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy with strobe lighting as my trigger. I take Keppra 1000mg twice daily (levetiracetam). I have been on the Implanon for 4 years now (on my second implant) and I find it works great for me and doesn't interact with my epilepsy. Of course the implanon implant contains hormones though and everyone's epilepsy is different. With my implanon, I have no period although towards the end of my first 2 years, I got irregular periods around every 2 or so weeks, which isn't surprising as I had a very unpredictable and painful cycle beforehand. I don't find the hormones interfere with my mood or my epilepsy. I truly hope you can find something which helps x

I felt the same way for a long time, then I tried the hormonal iud for just under a year and it was terrible, only benefit was that my head felt more clear than it did while being on the pill. I switched to the nuva ring, and while still being hormonal, I feel better about it because its still not the same as taking a pill, and the hormones are localized to the area. At least IMO, I really enjoy thw nuva ring

My doctor wanted to test my copper, zinc, and magnesium levels before I got the copper IUD. She said that too much copper preIUD is bad, as they use the same receptors that zinc needs. This would cause a zinc deficiency. Low magnesium can cause muscle cramps, perhaps that's what your headaches are. You can always use supplements to see if that helps you

Hey ! For your headaches problems you can go see an osteopath. I am myself an osteopath student, and I think the insertion of an IUD is traumatic for the body and can causes little dysfunctions. First on your uterus and then the rest of the body adapt itself. The sacrum is the bone behind your uterus and it is related to your head by the spine. You see now that could be related 😊 In the hope that it helped you I hope I was clear I'm sorry English isn't my native language

You are just the cutest thing. I had a hysterectomy this year (adenocarcinoma) and being off of birth control CHANGED. MY. LIFE. Pumping your body full of those hormones is horrible, I have decided. And don't let anyone get on your case about having kids. I was unable to carry after having cancer before, and it was obnoxious of people constantly getting on my case about "when" especially since I didn't really want kids to begin with. Apparently as a woman, not wanting kids is unacceptable 🙄 Anyway I'm rambling. Glad I stumbled onto your videos and definitely subscribed!!

I really wish more people understand what our bodies go through. It's a lot of hormones we are trying to deal with, then trying to figure out a birth control to work with our bodies is really hard at times. When I was your age, they would only give a IUD to women who have had children. I was told it was easier and a lot less painful.
@Katrinberndt
@Katrinberndt 4 года назад
Yeah, that’s no longer a requirement. I’m sure there’s a reason why they now give it to those who haven’t given birth. Sure it’s painful but overall it has worked well!
@CatriChan
@CatriChan 4 года назад
The other thing was also that if you change your mind about kids and IUD is removed the risk of miscarriage was higher because your cervix has to be forcefully opened to insert and remove IUD. If you have given birth your cervix has naturally widened and healed and that was not always the case when IUD was inserted. The doctors were afraid that patients may later accuse them of complications during pregnancies after IUD removal. Now we have different types of IUD's, we know more on how to use them so the process can be a lot safer and not posing a risk for possible future pregnancy.

Headaches aren’t too uncommon with this IUD. I have the copper IUD and it feels like I’m dying all the time, but on Friday it’s getting removed & my tubes will be tied! I was on the pill for about 15 years. I've never wanted children and decided I was tired of the hormones and had my tubes completely removed (bi-lateral salpengectomy) in October. Best choice of my life! I still get my periods, but have far less headaches than when I was on the pill. I used to get pretty bad headaches at least once a week. Now I just have heavy flow on day 2 but that's about it. Not much cramping. Don't know if you've considered a bi-salp, but something to consider for a permanent option if you're ever interested! As for help with the pain, I bought a "headache hat" from Amazon and I love it!

Some thoughts from a trans man on testosterone that has a copper IUD: I've had my IUD inserted almost 3 years ago and it was the perfect solution for me as testosterone ceases menstruation but I didn't want additional hormones that could possibly interfere with my mental health. Prior to being on testosterone, I had headaches and migraines frequently. Maybe your hormonal birth control was preventing headaches prior to getting the IUD? In one week I am have a full hysterectomy and am hoping I can take home my IUD as a keepsake lol

I've been on copper IUD for about 9 months now, this month is the first time my period has resembled what my period was before getting IUD, these last 9 months has been a hectic. Bigger abdominal pain, spotting, very heavy flow, and during one of the months I had a full period twice, a couple of months, my period had a bigger odor (very coppery odor). I had started to wonder if my period was ever going to normalize. So for me, this last time around, it was finally feeling more like a normal period. As far as headaches, prior, I would get massive headaches the day before my period, with IUD I get it less now, but my cramps are more severe. I drink my hot liquids to ease the cramps. I find drinking more fluids really help

I have a copper IUD since September 2019 and my experience with cramps and flow is similar to yours, although I had ovulation cramps before too. I chose copper because of my chronic migraines, I didn’t want any hormones to mess with that even more. So luckily I have not had an increase of headaches from my IUD. But maybe there is some indirect way of your IUD causing the headaches. There is a increase in inflammation so maybe your body lacks some nutrients like magnesium. If you have tension headaches the lack of magnesium can cause the muscles in your neck to cramp an cause pain. So maybe some supplements might help. Light exercise like walking or light cardio also often works really well for tension headaches or rubbing some peppermint oil on your forehead and temples. Please make sure that you don’t use painkillers on more than ten days a month, because overuse of those can cause headaches too. An other way to conquer headaches (yes I know a lot of ways 😅 chronic migraines do that to you) is using a relaxation technique like progressive muscle relaxation or even (if it sound old) yoga, which by the way can be a lot of fun exercise too. So @katrin Berndt I hope these tipps can help you a bit and you stay happy with your IUD 😘
@eloisemoody6883
@eloisemoody6883 4 года назад
Also I think the headaches might be to do with the fact that the copper in the IUD has inflammatory effects- a lot of people with inflammatory existing conditions they've found that they've had an increase in symptoms. If it's an inflammatory process then NSAID drugs will be more effective than painkillers, also there are some herbal remedies like liquorice root that are said to have some antiinflammatory effects x

I got my copper IUD around September two years ago and for me it was the best birth control option. I did definitely notice alot of similar symptoms as you've stated, the initial insertion hurt like birth then the cramps for the first two days were just awful but after everything settled I feel great. Worse thing I have to do is take one or two mital on some days leading up to my period and I've definitely noticed a heavier flow, but no headaches that I've noticed were related to it. I normally get headaches maybe once a month at most anyway. But over all I wouldn't trade it for any other method. Highly recommend it to the girls out there that know for certain they dont want a baby for 10+ years and dont want a hormonal birth control.

Honestly, the idea of an IUD (a foreign object inside of me) still freaks me out. I'll stick with condoms for now, which I had to use anyway because I don't want no STI's. I googled a bit and there are more people getting headaches after getting an IUD. It's apparently how the body sometimes reacts to copper. But it could also be PMS, which is a common side effect?

Having a foreign object inside me was my hesitation too. But experiencing broken condoms, I needed a backup and didn’t want to continue with anything hormonal. Do you know if the headaches go away over time? I have chiari one malformation and I have a headache/head pressure and other things 24/7 that disable me. I really want a copper IUD because I can’t take anything hormonal and I’d rather have something with added protection instead of only using condoms. But I’m scared that the copper IUD will just make my head pain worse. If it was temporary, I could probably “make it through” since it would have so many positives.

I’ve had my copper IUD for over 4 years! I love it so much and haven’t had any real side effects after the first 6 months! My periods are incredibly unreliable so I can have a typical cycle of anywhere from 28 days to 50 days but aside from my natural cycle lengths, my periods stopped being intensely heavy after the first 6 months. As for the length of my period itself, I have always been a 7-10 day bleeder since I was 11 so that’s not abnormal to me. My husband has only felt it a handful of times, it’s dependent on where my cervix is located during my cycle. My decision to get my IUD was based on a low sex drive with hormonal birth control and that has not been an issue since I had it placed! I’ve never had an issue with chronic headaches luckily enough. Some people can be more sensitive to copper as a metal so that is always something you can be allergy tested for.

I had my copper IUD inserted in October 2019 as well. I went from a hormonal implant, Nexplanon for 6 years, to the non-hormonal IUD. So far my experience has been a heavier and shorter cycle. With Nexplanon my cycle would last weeks, with the IUD it only last about 5 days now. The pain is definitely more more up there during my natural cycle considering before I would experience virtually little to no cramping at all, but it is tolerable. The only oddities that I have been experiencing is when i do trail running and I reach around 6 km I suddenly get the worst stab of cramps imaginable to the point where I literally have to take baby steps to continue.

Like you, I didn't want the hormones anymore and wanted my natural cycle and to be able to become pregnant when I wanted right away (though I know that's not the case for you, haha). I would get headaches sometimes when I had my IUD. I would drink more water during those times and eat a banana and take ibuprofen and it would usually go away. My headaches were never debilitating thankfully. I hope you find a solution!

I’ve only had it for a month but I have to wear a super plus tampon and a heavy overnight pad and both are getting FILLED up within 10 minutes!! It’s terrible and the cramps are ongoing even when I’m not on my period. Before I got the paragard my cramps were already really bad - sometimes would cause me to throw up and be unable to do anything productive that day. I've had my copper IUD for a little over a year now and I would honestly recommend it to anyone who's considering it! My flow is heavier now but it was very light beforehand so it's not unbearable, and my cramps are pretty much the same as they were before. I didn't realize until you mentioned it that I've also been experiencing ovulation cramps which I didn't know could be because of the copper IUD. Overall I'm so happy with it. Thanks for the update!

I have used a copper IUD for 11 years now. I will never use anything else. The body always aims for homeostasis. It will definitely not be happy about a foreign object. But better that than hormones and after a while, it does subside. I'm 37 now and have three day periods with little to no cramping.

@@MandaS1986 Hi, no I havent had that issue. The little strings soften and curl up near the cervix and are not really noticeable. You are supposed to occasionally check for the strings to ensure it's in place and that is recommended during menstruation, because the cervix is lower at that time and you can find them easier. it's also a reminder to check them monthly.

I just had mine removed due to wanting to finally try for baby no 2! However since it was removed less than a month ago, I have a pretty good memory of it. (It was in for a little under 2 years because after my daughters birth I had arm implant as a temp solution until I could look into what I wanted long term. About 12 weeks postpartum I switched from arm implant to copper iud.) ok anyways, the one thing I needed to say was my flow was much heavier! Like to the point I’d called my doctor. Mind you I was only 4 ish mos post party’s also and I never had a period with the arm implant (not sure if that’s due to having baby or arm implant or both haha) anyways once it did come back, roughly a month or so after the copper iud was put in, it was heavy, like more than double. Also, headaches I never even correlated to my iud!! However I got them regularly during my iud also! I didn’t think it was iud since it had no hormones but now that you say that I’m wondering if that’s why I got them too! Now looking back I’ve only had like one since it’s removal! Sorry this is all over the place I’m writing as I’m listening to the video haha. But anyways my flow was like more than doubled and I’d originally thought maybe due to having baby but the one period I’ve had since it’s removal was waaaaay lighter!

I have a hormonal IUD and absolutely love it. I almost got the copper IUD but I struggle with bad PCOS symptoms and my periods are so long and heavy that I was constantly anemic because of them, not even exaggerating. I talked to my doctor about getting an IUD and she suggested the hormonal one instead of the copper one since it could potentially help with my PCOS struggles. I've had mine for close to a year and a half now and it has helped a ton!! I'm no longer anemic all the time and my periods are normal for a change lol.

From my personal experience, the first couple of months I had increased bleeding/spotting but since then went on to not really having periods at all. But you have to give it a few months before you know whether it’ll decrease your flow or not, usually it does to my understanding. Good luck, hope it works well for you 🙂

i’ve had the paragard since april 2019 removed it june 2020. some of the symptoms i have been feeling maybe are associated with copper toxicity. the copper iud isn’t for everyone i suppose. symptoms: - headaches - loss of sex drive - irritated / agitation (mood) - spaciness / can’t focus - gastrointestinal distress (constipation, bloating, abdominal pain) maybe IBS - insomnia - initially had frequent yeast infections - cravings for high copper foods ex avocado - crave simple carbs

I found my period got shorter after getting the copper IUD - from ~12 to ~3 days - after the initial adjustment time. As someone else mentioned, copper can cause inflammation so maybe anti inflammatory pain meds will help the headaches. In regards to the menstrual cup - make sure to continue breaking the suction seal before removing it, and regularly check you can feel the strings. Because I was laissez-faire about it - and then at some point ~2 years after getting it the IUD had fallen out,which led to a whole unexpected pregnancy/termination palava. So, just make sure to check it's there regularly, jic.

I am currently trying to make the decision to get the copper IUD or tubal ligation. I had the mirena IUD years ago, 2 of them to be exact. Had severe lower back pain, I was on steroids like 4-5 times a year for it. Had the IUD removed when its time was up, the pain went away, then had another put in a year later and the pain came back within weeks. Had it take out after a year, I was on nothing for many years then went on the pill last year. After a year and a half on the pill I had a DVT and bilateral pulmonary embolism and was hospitalized. I actually had the Nexplanon put in the week before the clot went to my lungs. So I had had a DVT before the Nexplanon was put in and did not know it. I have had the Nexplanon for 3 months and have had so many hormonal side effects that its debilitating. So my gyn has agreed to take it out. I am not worried to much about the heavier periods as I am the possibility of back pain.

14 months with copper IUD. Before my periods lasted like 6 days, no cramps like never, it was very rare and lasted only a day if I had any. Very low flow. When I got copper IUD I had cramps for few months during periods but right now I don't really have them anymore, it is very rare. Sometimes I have and it lasts 1-2 days but it's completely manageable. The flow is heavier, my periods lasts now like 7-10 days in total. I would say only major change is that my periods lasts longer and I have heavier flow. But overall I'm really happy with copper IUD! Pills were really, REALLY awful to me in many ways. Auricular migraine was the worst part of it. Thankfully it stopped when I stopped hormones.

I had a copper IUD for about a year. I finally had it taken out in November. I wouldn't personally recommend an IUD because the body can have so many reactions to it that the IUD upsets the balance within the body. Shortly after getting the IUD places, I got bacterial vaginosis, which was treated but never went away until the IUD was taken out. Even after the IUD, my periods have not been the same since getting the IUD and I'm not sure if or when they will return to their previous state. If IUD's work for you, then great but if you're thinking of getting one, I can't say I'd reccomend it.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to continue bleeding? The loss of a period on the mirena, you still have your cycle...ovulation, and a “period”, it’s just that the lining builds up less and less each month and there’s less to shed. I was surprised that’s how it worked so just mentioning it! It was important to me not to trick my body into thinking I’m pregnant And just not ovulate.

An IUD is, essentially, an inflammatory device. So if you struggle with any type of autoimmune issues, it could cause problems or flare-ups. The headaches could maybe be related to that? Obviously I don't know your medical history (and I'm no doctor), so maybe not. I still think it's important information to have though! Not all doctors say it's an inflammatory device and that can be dangerous to some people. Hannah Witton talked about this recently in one of her videos, I highly recommend everyone check it out. She needed emergency surgery because of a flare-up of her UC and she suspects it may have been because of her IUD.

About headaches: have you read about copper toxicity? maybe there is not enough research but because they have not made it, still, it's only logical that your body may absorb some of the copper from the coil and that makes your zinc levels to fall down along with other minerals like magnesium and maybe iron and others. There are lots of women that report estrogen excess (also because of the copper increase) after being on the copper IUD, and one of the common symptoms is headaches.

I noticed the headaches about 2.5 months after the IUD(non copper) placement, now been 5 months. Some of many things I've tried is herbal supplements mainly ones that can help the nervous system to calm and relax. Also CBD some product, like tinctures, sometimes even at night taking a melatonin.
