Hi Beth, I just watched this video and it inspired me clean out my closet! I have a smaller closet and a different lifestyle than you. I’m an RN so my work wardrobe is scrubs. I took some of your pointers, mixed with my needs and came up with a good compromise. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Beth excellent video. Love how all your clothes are in an open space that is my dream. My closet is fairly small and closed. Oh well work with what I got. Have a lovely day!
You have significantly more space than I or we do. When you share a wardrobe with hubby, his needs have to be considered too. I use similar techniques for coding as you suggest, although I have to store autumn/winter or spring/summer up in my loftspace of house because of limited space. I regularly have a de clutter but I am seriously not buying stuff but choosing to refashion what I have, with my sewing skills.
I clean out often and send to opshop but I don't throw out good clothes that I haven't worn in a year as I'd have no good clothes to wear. It's ok if lots of money and can buy more.
Recently, we remodeled our master bedroom closet and I find it so user friendly. My organization is much like yours, even down to arranging like items by color. I had to laugh when you mentioned the "No wire hangers" comment, which my daughter and I occasionally refer to. I also think having all the same hanger makes your closet look nice and organized. I'm late saying this, but I love your new haircut.
I also add notes to my garments. My weight fluctuates within about 7 lbs. This affects which slacks I can wear at any given time (most my clothes are quite fitted). So I have a note about what weight those slacks fit me at (see below). Plus, I'm cold a lot, so I want to know quickly and easily how much wool is in the item. Plus dry-clean I don't wear as much. Plus any dressing notes, eg. is scratchy and requires long underwear or hose, or needs a certain color under-garment, or needs a belt (or will fall down), or lo-rise so I know if I can tuck a top or not, or must have square neck under-shirt, etc. Also, if it's a piece I like, but just isn't comfortable for all day at work, I'll add NFAD, which means not for all day, so I wear those when I know I have a shorter day, and I'll note whether it has spandex or not, so if I'm going to have a long day, or be sitting a lot, or travelling, I like some spandex, or "must be tucked" or "don't try to tuck." And the heel length it requires eg., 1-2". I put all this on a 3X5 notecard, punch a hole in it and hang with rubberband or twist-tie over the hanger. So an example for a slacks is: Jones, brown herring-bone. Fits at 113-115. 100% wool. No spandex. Needs belt. NFAD. Heels: 2-3". I can't tell you how much time this has saved me in the morning. Also, if I notice something looks great with it, I'll note that on the card eg., great with Talbots double-breasted brown/blk blazer. Then if it needs repair, I write that in pencil on the card what the garment needs (eg. "hem coming out"), leave the garment hanging up but out of its usual place, and, once repaired, I erase the pencil note. For a dress, or top, it might read: Pink, polka-dot A.Taylor sleeveless. Dry-clean. Halter or racer bra. Must have wrap or jacket [that means it has no heat of its own and I run cold.] Great with silver jacket. Non-wrinkle; great for travel. (I actually draw a little airplane for things I think are great for travel: non-wrinkle, light weight, basic color, and versatile.) These notes sound like a lot of work, but for any new garment, it takes less than 5 minutes to create and hang it on the hanger, and has saved hours in searching for the right under-garments, the right belt, and shoes, esp. in the morning. (I have not advanced to putting together my outfits night before; maybe one day?) And when I find a great pairing, I can recreate it easily another time. Yes, I have a lot of clothes, too many, but I do purge those I'm not wearing, and this system helps me use my wardrobe much better. So, it's worth the time and effort. One other thing, I color code around the hole punch on the 3x5 card with a marker: Green marker is for my biggest slacks "fits at 118-120". Yellow is for my moderate sized slacks "fits at 116-118" and orange are the tightest, "fits at 113-115." I had some even tighter that used to make red, but I wasn't wearing them (ie. couldn't get in them any longer) and so purged them. Hope this system can be of use to someone else.
The tips are great but I have serious closet envy! Living in a NYC apartment, I have closets (plenty of space) with louver doors but I love the open closets you have. Everything is so beautiful to look at and should make looking great daily easy (at least you make it look easy!!)
Hi Beth, thank you for the great video, I will look at purging my closet soon too. Thinking of having a my walk in closet too, is it easy to maintain? Dust free etc. thank you so much, have a great day. xo
That’s my problem. A good friend suggested putting it in another closet and revisiting it in a month and asking if you missed it. Then donate it if you didn’t. There someone who will not only treasure it but wear it.
Beth I just organized my closet, I didn't realize how many clothes I had and found some outfits new with tags on. And yes I donated 2 big boxes of clothes. I still have to go through one more closet. Its funny what you said about i don't know what to wear, my husband laughs when I tell him that.
I actually have been doing the hangers' system for several years. I like your way of displaying your bags out, however, I do have a question about how you are displaying your clothing, shoes and bags out.... DUST!!! How do you keep them from dust? Thanks :)
Great video, Beth. Lots of great ideas (wish I had that big/kind of closet....envy envy)....but I can get rid of a lot by following your 3 rules. Love your hairstyle, by the way. Very flattering....as always!
This is good advice. You and some other fashion forward and practical stylist recommend the same actions. I gave away a few bags of clothing last week. Everything you said is true. If you are not wearing it, it is just taking up space and causing confusion. I do not feel I am done. I still feel like I need another go around. This was my first time so I felt a little awkward but now I know what I am doing I need to go through again. Thank you! (How come I never knew about the lingerie kaboodle?!)
Beth I love your new haircut. I would love to get it myself but I have my hair colored in a reddish brown and it would quickly turn white between colorings. How would you handle that?
Awesome ideas! I too already did some of what you suggested! But then again Thank you for all your tips , I will be changing , the new tips to me that you also suggested too!
Great video Beth! I have a question that Ive been wondering about for a while. You frequently refer to Mr. Styles. Who is that? Just wondering. Thanks for all the tips!
Thank you Beth for the exception video, but you didn't include the storage of hats in your closets. How can one store hats so that you don't eat up the limited space in some closets.
Mr. Style always comes up in conversations---Can I see an image of Mr. Style. Most of your tips I have been doing awhile. Your videos are fun to watch!
Hi Beth, I love your channel. Can you talk about the basics when you don't have a very active social life? I go from work home, someti.es an invitation for a birthday party and I go to church in uniform because I work at it. Tks. Also I can't wear fancy shoes because as use I have problem feet. I'm 71
What would you suggest that I do with a really good full length mink coat? I know I will never wear it. I’m not into wearing animals, and I will retire in Florida. Plus, it’s heavy as heck! I would like to get some money for it. It is very nice quality.l
Do the clothes fade from the light coming in the window? Do the jacket shoulders get dusty? Does one Cedar Strip prevent moths from eating of all your woolens?
Do you have a good tip for identifying which jeans are which when they're stacked like that? It drives me crazy! On hangers you could use tags, but in a drawer it can get frustrating and I have to pull out each pair to see what they are!😒
Did I hear right in your video? You used to live in Houston, Texas? I live in Houston (born and breed here) and right now dealing with really hot weather.🌞 Dressing for the office is hard some days.😥
Hope you don't mind my question. It is aparent you are wearing under your orange long sleeve top a super great seemless supportive undergarment. I would love to know. Thank you. Whatever your undergarment is I need it. My size and style is quite the same as yours. Thank you.
after purging her clothes I helped me daughter in law put together 10 outfits including jewelry and scarfs so when she is ready to go she just picks which outfit she is in the mood for
OR...you could come to my closet and do it for me. Lolol thank you for sharing your tips. I really am trying to get motivated. Maybe I should add alchohol to the task. Hmm I am thinking a margarita and The Eagles!😉
I like to hang the jeans and chinos as well as they have different cuts and length and you cannot see that in a pile. Do we really need that many clothes, bags, shoes???...
Instead of rubbish why not recycle. Some stores like H&M will take your recycles and give you a coupon for a discount. It is much better than putting it in the landfill where tons of clothing is going anyway. I would love to see an episode regarding your expanded view.
How sad you so call ladies of style feel that way. Every day I see a new form of hate. Miss Beth just mentioned her in passing, it was not a political statement. Miss Beth keep on rocking Darling, ugly is ugly nothing you can do to mask that.
