LESSON SUMMARY
Have you noticed that most songs in a fake book don't have intros? That's because the main purpose of a fake book is to document the basic essence of a jazz composition-its melody and harmony. It is expected that performers will interpret the tune and supply their own personality and style. Intros are very much dependent on what style you choose. In today's Quick Tip, you will learn 3 practical intros that you can apply to jazz standards in 3 different styles, including:

I'll use the swing intro can be used in: Take the A Train, Satin Doll, C jam blues and ! I'll use the Ballad Intro can be used in: Misty, Stella by starlight, The way you look tonight! I'll use the latin intro in: Song for my father, Girl from Ipanema! Also, I have a video suggestion: Could you teach a bit on motivic development in jazz? I personally find it very amusing. Thanks!

In the first intro you identify the G-Bb-Db-F/G chord as A7(b13b9) - would this be easier to think of as Gm7b5 (G half-dim) instead - especially as you have the G in the bass? Also not sure why there is a Db and not C# if you are calling this A7... ? this seems a bit confusing.

Many thanks for this video! Just a detail: the last chord of the Latin intro has the major 9th (note E), not the flat 9th, am I right? Apart of this note, the last two bars are exactly one tone below the first two, I think

put a b9 on the g7 on the first intro and its much nicer, plus a litte high G to set it up

Good stuff - thanks. However, I think the last chord name in the first intro is wrong: It is not a G13, since there is no 11 ( C)included. Not sure how it should be notated - probably G add9,13 or maybe G13 no 11. Same applies to the second example: There is no 11 C in the G13b9, so it is not a 13-chord.

Not every note has to played in an extended chord.

@@sourigaijin You are right. However, if it is essential that a note belonging to the extended chord is not played, it should be made clear in the notation. G13 is probably ok in this case :)
